The search for meaning is at once very old and extremely contemporary. Existential questions about origins, our destiny, and the purpose of our lives are no less meaningful today than they were in previous centuries. Since time immemorial, people have tried to find their way in life and to give it meaning. Do things 'have' meaning? Do we 'give' them meaning? And how can we live life to the full? In this book, the authors attempt to provide a few pointers. In the first part, the historical-cultural evolution from mystery to disenchantment is laid out, particularly with regard to our approach to the Bible. In the second, possible responses to this disenchantment are described, ranging from reactionary fundamentalism to enrichment through critical approaches. Finally, the third part offers biblical answers to fundamental existential questions, including those regarding our origin and destiny, human co-existence and social justice, and the relationship between God and human history, and the human experience of violence, suffering and love. This book highlights the way in which biblical literature is essentially and authentically associated with human existence and our quest for meaning.

Florilegium Lovaniense. Studies in Septuagint and Textual Criticism in Honour of Florentino Garcia Martinez is intended for a special present initiated by his Leuven collegae proximi on the occasion of Professor Garcia Martinez' retirement as a research professor in the Biblical Studies Research Department of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Leuven (K.U.Leuven). Like the personality of the celebrated scholar himself, the composition of his Festschrift has become a most colourful undertaking. After the editor's presentation of the rich biography and the huge bibliography of Florentino Garcia Martinez, M. Vervenne aims at evoking Florentino's personality throughout his life and work. Following this introduction, some thirty contributions transform the Festschrift into a wide-ranging collection of high quality approaches to a number of diverse topics, thus mirroring the wide spectrum of both Florentino's and their own work. The discoveries of the Dead Sea, as we are used to call them, have changed the scholarly landscape of textual criticism to a considerable, if not enormous, extent. The state of the art with respect to both the textual development and the interpretation of the literary and theological form of individual biblical books has been seriously challenged. It appears as if no single book can escape from reinterpretation from this perspective. One of the collections of texts that can serve as an outstanding example on which the Dead Sea Scrolls have shed new light, can be found in the so-called Historical Books. Against that background, and in co-operation with the Louvain Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (CSSTC) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (BE) and the Universidad de Alcala (ES), the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (ES) has organised an international expert symposium on the theme: 'After Qumran: old and new editions of biblical texts - the Historical Books' (31 May ' 2 June 2010). This volume presents the proceedings of this highly enriching symposium.

As part of a Joint Project of Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), the Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven) organised a Specialists' Symposium on the Septuagint Translation. This scholarly meeting took place from 4 to 6 December 2006 at the Leuven Faculty of Theology, Research Unit Biblical Studies. The symposium's aim was to survey contemporary research within the realm of the translations of the Septuagint. Therefore, the most important Septuagint translation projects were confronted with each other, from the perspective of their objective and methodology as well as with regard to their concrete application in particular cases or examples. The meeting was exclusively intended for specialists in the field. The present book contains the proceedings of this symposium. It offers the full text of the contributions by J. Cook, R. Sollamo, H. Ausloos & B. Lemmelijn, G. Dorival, K. Hauspie, C. Dogniez, M. Karrer, W. Kraus, E. Bons, H.-J. Fabry, A. Pietersma, D. Buchner, C. Boyd-Taylor, H. Van Rooy, J. Naude, A. Piquer, P. Torijano & Julio Trebolle Barrera and N. Fernandez Marcos. In this way, it reflects the views of leading voices in contemporary research on the Septuagint's translation, and thus confronts different methodological perspectives on a most intriguing research topic.
