Manchester University Press The Knight and the Barrel (Le Chevalier Au Barisel)
Le Chevalier au barisel is an established part of the Old French literary canon, but up to now it has not been available in English. This translation offers a vibrant but scholarly version of the exciting short story, suitable for a wide readership including university students, scholars of associated disciplines (history, English, theology, fine arts, comparative literature, etc.) and general readers. The greatest strength of the book is the translation itself, which can be read without reference to the original text or alongside the medieval French. But also valuable is the apparatus surrounding the text: cultural rather than linguistic, explicative rather than excessively technical. A substantial commentary reveals the internal struggles of the protagonists, highlights existing research and suggests future lines of enquiry. This commentary is a freestanding work of rigorous scholarship that makes plentiful reference to the text.

Peeters Publishers Performance, Drama and Spectacle in the Medieval City: Essays in Honour of Alan Hindley
The growth of urban life in the Middle Ages led to a flourishing of performance, drama and spectacle as we understand them today. Here is presented, for the first time, a collection of commissioned essays whose goal is to bring together a broad variety of interdisciplinary, innovative 'snapshots' from different geographical locations, time frames, traditions and scholarly fields. Contributors to Performance, Drama, Spectacle and the Medieval City are scholars of international prominence. Through their diverse interests, but single focus, the fundamental mobility of medieval culture is acknowledged. The collective aim in honouring Alan Hindley and his ongoing work is to produce a set of variations which offer diversity yet coherence. Performance and spectacle played a central role not only in the realm of urban entertainment, but also adopted enormously important civic and religious functions. The cities in the medieval west were both a hotbed of cultural manifestations, and elemental in the development of drama. In its refusal to accept subjective boundaries and its broad assumption that drama takes many forms, it is hoped that Performance, Drama, Spectacle and the Medieval City will find favour with its dedicatee, and imitate his wisdom and openness by enabling dialogue between traditions, critical approaches, and moments in time.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Courtly Arts and the Art of Courtliness: Selected Papers from the Eleventh Triennial Congress of the International Courtly Literature Society, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 29 July-4 August 2004
A wide overview of court culture in the middle ages. The court exercised an enormous amount of influence on the culture of the middle ages, as the essays collected here demonstrate. They examine a wide variety of different areas of medieval courtly culture, from the history of the book through courtly music to the theory of courtesy and courtly love. While some authors deal with the central texts of courtly literature, such as Castiglione's Book of the Courtier, Marie de France's Lais, the romances of Chrétien de Troyes, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Gottfried von Strassburg, and the corpus of courtly lyric in various languages, others consider less-studied works like Galeran de Bretagne, or the French version of the Disciplina Clericalis. Several contributions take a comparative approach to courtly texts outside the Western tradition, while others point to the courtly nature of chronicle literature and to courtly influences on religious-didactic works. The volume as a whole thus presents an overview of medieval court culture. Contributors: GLORIA ALLAIRE, LAURA D.
