Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Congo Revisited
Angelo Turconi has spent fifty years roaming the Democratic Republic of Congo. This passionate, curious and compassionate photographer continues to this day to document the daily life of the Congolese, with a particular focus on their cultural heritage and artisanal and artistic traditions. His photographs capture the power of ancestral ceremonies and the joy of popular celebrations, presided over by the traditional chiefs who still occupy a prestigious position. They reveal the social structure of this central African community by observing the work of artisans, farmers, conveyors of goods (riding their impressive cargo bikes) and market traders. More than just a witness, Angelo Turconi calls himself an emissary of memory. It is the subject of memory that seems to haunt the pages of this book. By drawing on the power of customs that have not yet been dulled by globalisation, his photographs take us on a journey to a world apart: one that is recognisably contemporary and yet connected to references and traditions that seem to come from outside of our world. Text in English and French.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Kobe: Ingenious Simplicity
Kobe, artistic alias of Jacques Saelens, has made sculptures that toy with two-dimensionality - his trademark. His broad, thin figures hardly make use of the third dimension and embody plenty of ambiguities. His brainchilds are lyrical; they look casual and carefree, but at the same time they are restrained by a formal straightjacket. His works radiate a contagious joyful simplicity, yet at the same time their construction is very thought through. They are born in the mind of a perfectionist and aesthete who continually strives to eradicate all that is anecdotal. Their round, feminine shapes and cheerful poses seduce, but their superhuman and mysterious calmness also exclude. Faces are closed and stripped of all personal traits. The female figure and the horse dominate the oeuvre, and his themes are classical, conforming to a long art historical tradition. The simplicity that radiates from Kobe's images conceals their ingenious - sometimes engineered - nature. Between the artist's idea and the finished image lies a world of abstraction and reasoning, a long period in which Kobe reflects on his initial inspiration and solves any structural problems.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Central Nigerian Art Revisited: Mumuye and Surrounding Peoples
In previous studies, Jan Strybol pointed out that - contrary to popular belief - sculpture flourished in northern Nigeria. Wood sculptures could be found just about everywhere, with the exception of part of the Far North. In this study, the author first examines the sculptural traditions of a number of peoples in central Nigeria, more specifically from the Jos Plateau and from the Middle Benue Valley to the source area of the Taraba River. These peoples can be described as non-centralised communities where art was mainly produced in perishable materials by part-time artists, in contrast to the centralised empires in the South (Ife, Benin) where full-time specialist sculptors created complex artefacts in durable materials (stone, bronze, iron). Perhaps the most familiar ethnic group in the Central Benue region to lovers of African art are the Mumuye. Since the end of the last century, as a result of the advance of world religions, the traditional rites of the Mumuye have rapidly disappeared and with them the Mumuye sculptural tradition so much admired in Europe and America. In addition to wood sculptures, Jan Strybol also pays attention to objects in bronze, iron, terracotta and other materials. These art forms have been very underexposed until now and have almost completely vanished. Finally, the author also delves into the artistic achievements of some little-known remnant groups within the Mumuye territory, which can boast of a rich art tradition.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Lux Æterna
Artist Ellen Marie harks back to the craft of the old masters. A technical style she perfected at the Barcelona Academy of Art. Lux Æterna, Latin for ‘Eternal Light’, is a series of 57 paintings in which we follow the process of a man on his way to self-realisation. In the first act, we find him writhing in agony, tormented by a blindfold, which prevents him from seeing the light that surrounds him. In act two the blindfold has come off and gradually a dance unfolds, a dialogue between the light falling on his body and the life forces welling up from within him. In the third act, blobs of paint splash from the canvas. The form falls apart and transmutes into an unrecognisable mass that contains merely the suggestion of a figure. In the last part our man finally finds kinship with like-minded souls bathing in the divine light. The story visualises the artist’s inner quest for Truth, Light and Freedom. The thematic repetition gave her the opportunity to deepen the technical aspect of oil paint and to experiment. Art critic Koen Van Damme composed five accompanying poems. Text in English and Dutch.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA With a Factor 8 to the Mobility System of the Future
Climate change is here. We are in the middle of it and cannot turn a deaf ear to the alarm bells that are sounding ever more compellingly. The impact of unbridled greenhouse gas emissions is incontrovertibly proven and clearly measurable: the warming of the atmosphere and oceans, a change in the frequency and intensity of precipitation, a change in storm activity, a faster acidification of the oceans... There is no more time to close our eyes and think the problem away. No, if we don't want to burden future generations with insurmountable problems, we need to take action... and right away. Cathy Macharis, professor of Sustainable Mobility and Logistics at the VUB, puts her finger on the problem and translates meeting the climate goals - which for greenhouse gas emissions implies a reduction by a factor of 8 - into a concrete and sustainable mobility plan to which everyone can and will have to do their bit. The challenge is huge, and despite the fact that technology can help us do this, technology alone cannot solve the problem. In 8 A's a (Awareness, Avoidance, Act and Shift, Anticipation, Acceleration, Actor involvement, Alteration and All in love!), a plan of action is comprehensively proposed, starting with a change in mentality. This discourse advocates urgent but achievable change, without finger-pointing, hysteria or the pessimism so often inherent in the climate debate.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Bruges Triennial 2021: TraumA
With TraumA, the Triennial of Bruges dives into the ‘uncanny’ history and reality of Bruges. Historical layers are exposed, forgotten or hidden storylines discussed. This edition explores the thin line between dream and trauma, between paradise and hell. It appeals to the imagination, to the pomp and circumstance, but also to the ‘uncanny’ that is present underground. For although Bruges seems to be a dream destination for many, poverty, loneliness, pollution or fear also lurk in this picture-perfect world. Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA uses artistic and architectural interventions to bring the less attractive aspects to the surface and make them part of the city’s image. It creates a polyphonic discourse, where there is room for imagination, beauty, darkness and complexity. A space where artists and architects can explore both the stage and the dusty wings. Triennial Bruges 2021: TraumA balances between the present and the hidden. With a course of sculptural, architectural and organic creations, it is a celebration of the versatility and mobility of this city. Between private and public. Between dream and nightmare. Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Fibre-Fixed: Composites in Design
Fibre-Fixed. Composites in Design is a book about what can be achieved when tried and tested fibres are combined with other materials - often (bio) plastics - to create fibre reinforced composite materials. These fibres can be manifold: carbon, glass, a synthetic fibre or natural fibres such as flax, hemp, jute, ramie, silk... The strength and stiffness of these fibres, combined with the lightness of plastics, inspires designers to create lightweight, energy-efficient products. At the same time, the composite materials allow a great freedom of shape and design. Designing and using composite materials can be an answer to the social and ecological challenges today's society is facing. This book, edited by Lut Pil and Ignaas Verpoest, focuses on the results achieved in the past five years and looks ahead to some of the breakthroughs that are expected in the years to come. The projects presented in the book are diverse and come from different sectors such as mobility, sports, medical applications, energy supply, infrastructure, architecture and products for daily use. Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Plant Fever: Towards a phyto-centred design
For centuries, our inherent alienation from nature has prevented us from truly understanding the potential of plants as more than simple materials or decorative objects. In recent years, however, new scientific discoveries and philosophical approaches have reframed our relationship with them, questioning the dualism human/nature so much rooted in Western thinking. Echoing the belief of American ecologist Ian Baldwin that "we should try to think like plants", designers, scientists and engineers, started to look into plants’ structures and behaviours adopting them as allies to develop solutions for current and upcoming environmental and social issues. Plant Fever proposes to look at the future of design from this new vegetal perspective, moving from a human-centred to a phyto-centred design. Spanning from products and fashion items to material research, open-source devices and emerging technologies, a selection of approx. 50 exhibits - representing the work of creatives from more than 20 countries - will investigate notions such as plant blindness, eco-feminism, forestry, biomimicry and upcycling, but also post-colonialism and cultural landscapes. Conceived as a militant exposition, Plant Fever will not fear to take a stand, ask critical questions and call for new radical perspectives, involving the public in a positive, inspiring and constructive conversation. Includes contributions by Emanuele Coccia, Carole Collet, dach&zephir, Quentin Hiernaux, Overmind, Marie Pok, Catriona A. H. Sandilands, Ana Silva, Penny Sparke, Trajna collective. Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Constructed Bouquets
As in many things, a well-thought out base structure is a necessity to arrive at a good end result. The same goes for constructions and structures used in floral art. A construction, whether it's made from natural or artificial materials, helps surpass the boundaries of what is technically achievable. It can be used to give a creation a three dimensional or architectural shape, can add to or break down symmetry, help explore creative possibilities or simply act as a supplemental decorative touch. Masterflorists Stefan Gottle (DE), Frederic Dupre (FR), Patrick Jansen (NL) and Stijn Simaeys (BE) show how it can be done with flair, fun, inventiveness and elegance.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Ikebana Through all Seasons

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Haribana
The Haribana style was created in May 2020 in the mid of the global pandemic when the supply of fresh flowers and other materials was limited in Singapore. Used to making flamboyant designs with an abundance of flowers, the material shortage forced floral designer Harijanto Setiawan to drastically rethink his design style and to come up with a fresh way to create high-quality and impactful designs using the least number of materials as possible. One could argue that the pandemic was a blessing in disguise for Harijanto, as it rekindled his passion for floristry and allowed him to reinvent himself and show another aspect of his personality as a designer – away from the extravagance everyone was used to. It allowed him to go back to his roots as an architect. While Harijanto’s imagination was still limitless, the realisation of his ideas had to be within the reality of the pandemic. A grass leaf and a single flower are enough to create a Haribana piece, a highly architectural design statement with a single flower as focal point. The name Haribana hints at Ikebana – even though these designs cannot officially be classified as ‘Ikebana’, as even the most free-spirited Ikebana schools objected to this. Haribana therefore is Harijanto’s own interpretation of ‘some sort of Ikebana’ married with an architectural style and approach. Haribana pieces incorporate architectural concepts such as structure, balance, shape, line, color, texture, rhythm and harmony into floral art, as if the two are destined for each other, rather than forced upon. Steel grass stalks can be seen as the load bearing structures in architecture: the steel reinforcements and the concrete. The greenery is shaped to create the base structure, a filigree facade against which a single flower can shine. Haribana is suitable for any designer who wants to explore and understand how architecture can be translated through flowers. Haribana has been well received and it is Harijanto Setiawan’s hope that it will fill a unique void in floristry and develop into a specific style that is adapted worldwide. This book contains 65 stunning Haribana pieces designed by the master himself.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Sculptures of the Nigerian Middle Belt
The ethnographic literature of the 20th century focused mainly on the sculptural traditions of the numerous ethnic groups that populated Southern Nigeria while the more northern areas remained largely terra incognita. In 2013 Jan Strybol published a study on the sculpture of Northern Nigeria. He pointed out that in many parts of this region there are people who still had, at least until recently, their own sculptural tradition. In this study the author restricted himself to what is referred to as the Middle Belt and especially to the part between the Bauchi Plateau, the Gongola River and the Katsina Ala River. In 1974 Roy Sieber pointed out that, with a few exceptions, the people who were members of the Niger-Congo language family laid the foundations for the great African sculptural traditions south of the Sahara. However, the largest group of iconophile peoples in the Central Middle Belt of Nigeria is to be found in the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. In this book of objects from private collections the author shows the great variety of the sculptures of the Middle Belt. This study mainly deals with wooden figures but also contains four wooden masks and three bronzes. Text in English and French.

Stichting Kunstboek BVBA Yasser Booley: South Africa at Liberty
Yasser 'Mierkat' Booley started producing photographs in 1993 on the eve of the 'new' South Africa. This book is a celebration, an indulgent vision. Booley's South Africa shows ordinary people caught at a crossroads, entangled in a dishevelled unity. He brings to light the beauty of humanity through all religious and cultural differences, through class and gender diversity.
