Johns Hopkins University Press Making Medicine Scientific: John Burdon Sanderson and the Culture of Victorian Science
In Victorian Britain scientific medicine encompassed an array of activities, from laboratory research and the use of medical technologies through the implementation of sanitary measures that drained canals and prevented the adulteration of milk and bread. Although most practitioners supported scientific medicine, controversies arose over where decisions should be made, in the laboratory or in the clinic, and by whom-medical practitioners or research scientists. In this study, Terrie Romano uses the life and eclectic career of Sir John Burdon Sanderson (1829-1905) to explore the Victorian campaign to make medicine scientific. Sanderson, in many ways a prototypical Victorian, began his professional work as a medical practitioner and Medical Officer of Health in London, then became a pathologist and physiologist and eventually the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford. His career illustrates the widespread support during this era for a medicine based on science. In Making Medicine Scientific, Romano argues this support was fueled by the optimism characteristic of the Victorian age, when the application of scientific methods to a range of social problems was expected to achieve progress. Dirt and disease as well as the material culture of experimentation -from frogs to photographs-represent the tangible context in which Sanderson lived and worked. Romano's detailed portrayal reveals a fascinating figure who embodied the untidy nature of the Victorian age's shift from an intellectual system rooted in religion to one based on science.

Abrams Terra Nova: The New World After Oil, Cars, and Suburbs
Many experts agree that energy is the defining issue of this century. Climate change, decimated wildlife, lost farmlands and foreign wars are only a few of the results of our dependence on oil. In Terra Nova, landscape ecologist Eric Sanderson takes us on a journey of discovery, probing the interconnectedness of oil, cars and transportation, suburban living and land use. Divided into two sections, Sanderson takes a uniquely cross disciplinary approach to delve into the roots of our oil dependence, explaining not only the natural history and chemistry of oil, but also detailing how it frames our definition of ourselves as a country and continues to shape our economic and foreign policies. The second half of the book lays out a radical plan for moving away from the shackles of oil through a thought provoking re-imagining of everything: from our cities, to our public works, to our tax laws. Along with his compelling narrative, Sanderson illustrates his ambitious ideas with maps, data graphics, photography and simulated views of the future.

Inner Traditions Bear and Company Psychiatry and the Spirit World: True Stories on the Survival of Consciousness after Death
A psychiatrist’s comprehensive examination of evidence for the survival of consciousness after death After a twenty-year break from practice, Alan Sanderson returned to clinical psychiatry at age fifty-nine and soon realized that many of his patients were plagued by troublesome earthbound spirits, some of whom had been attached across lifetimes to multiple incarnations as well as multiple hosts. By talking with these attached spirits and persuading them to leave their hosts, Dr. Sanderson found remarkable success in the treatment of his patients. Now, more than 30 years later, Dr. Sanderson shares his extensive research on the afterlife, the survival of consciousness after physical death, and paranormal phenomena related to the spirit world. He explains his practice of psychiatric spirit release, centered on the spiritual and psychic aspects of emotional disturbance, and shares case studies complete with full accounts of treatment sessions. He offers first-hand accounts of the survival of the spirit after death, from ancient times to the present day, and explores end-of-life experiences, including what is witnessed by the living people in the room, as well as profound accounts of near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, and reincarnation. He examines evidence for mediumship, clairvoyance, telepathy, and the psychic aspects of heart transplants. He also details cases of remote healing, further proving the existence of connections beyond the material world. Presenting a wealth of evidence, as well as suggestions for new treatment possibilities for mental health problems, Dr. Sanderson offers a comprehensive examination of spirit existence and the survival of consciousness after death.

Harvard University Press Prospective Longevity: A New Vision of Population Aging
From two leading experts, a revolutionary new way to think about and measure aging.Aging is a complex phenomenon. We usually think of chronological age as a benchmark, but it is actually a backward way of defining lifespan. It tells us how long we’ve lived so far, but what about the rest of our lives? In this pathbreaking book, Warren C. Sanderson and Sergei Scherbov provide a new way to measure individual and population aging. Instead of counting how many years we’ve lived, we should think about the number of years we have left, our “prospective age.” Two people who share the same chronological age probably have different prospective ages, because one will outlive the other. Combining their forward-thinking measure of our remaining years with other health metrics, Sanderson and Scherbov show how we can generate better demographic estimates, which inform better policies. Measuring prospective age helps make sense of observed patterns of survival, reorients understanding of health in old age, and clarifies the burden of old-age dependency. The metric also brings valuable data to debates over equitable intergenerational pensions.Sanderson and Scherbov’s pioneering model has already been adopted by the United Nations. Prospective Longevity offers us all an opportunity to rethink aging, so that we can make the right choices for our societal and economic health.

Running Press,U.S. Stark Raving Dad: Poems for the Frazzled Parent in All of Us
Dads are hard to buy for. Books are easy gifts. A book dad can laugh at with mom and the kids? Solid gold. Let's be honest: Most gifts for dad usually end up being a golf club or a tie. But what about the dad in desperate need of a laugh, who is looking for reassurance he's not the only father trying to figure it all out? Stark Raving Dad is a collection of 75 hilarious poems -- no claims to be Walt Whitman here -- that capture the hapless anxiety of dads worldwide. Over the years, Sanderson Dean has turned all his fatherly angst into a collection of poetry, accompanied by crudely-drawn art created by his children. From surviving road trips to being puked on, Dean covers many of the rarely talked about adventures that make the journey of parenthood so exciting.
