Pharmaceutical Press Introduction to Statistics in Pharmaceutical Clinical Trials
This book is a self-contained introduction to Statistics, presented in the context of clinical trials and pharmaceutical drug development. It focuses on the statistical analyses most commonly used in drug development and is therefore an ideal introduction to pharmaceutical statistics. Instead of introducing a series of statistical techniques, the book's organizational structure follows the order in which numerical information and statistical analyses are used in trials and new drug development. All students taking classes in pharmaceutical sciences and clinical research need a solid knowledge and understanding of the nature, methods, application and importance of Statistics. They need to understand:why, and how data are collected in clinical trials; how these data are summarized and analyzed; what the results mean in the context of the clinical research question; and, how the results are communicated to regulatory agencies and to scientific and medical communities. This title therefore adopts a unique approach and concept in organization of the content. It begins with an introduction to statistical theory, analysis and interpretation. This is followed by a discussion of t-tests and confidence intervals. Readers are then taken through the whole process of new drug development (using one specific example throughout) that is meaningful in the context of their broader studies. Throughout this process, statistical techniques and analyses are introduced in the order in which they are employed during the process. The book's realistic scientific and progressive organization from pre-clinical trials to clinical pharmacology through clinical trials is novel, meaningful and educationally powerful. The book emphasises the importance of descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics, something that is rarely done.Supplementary material is included for this text on the PharmPress website in the form of PowerPoint lecture notes on Statistics (based on content of this book) that can be downloaded by lecturers.

Pharmaceutical Press Pharmaceutical Toxicology
The "ULLA" series is a new and innovative series of introductory textbooks for postgraduate students in the pharmaceutical sciences. This new series is produced by the ULLA Consortium (European University Consortium for Advanced Pharmaceutical Education and Research). The Consortium is a European academic collaboration in research and teaching of the pharmaceutical sciences that is constantly growing and expanding. Before a drug substance can be tested in man, a set of toxicology studies must be carried out in animals and in vitro to ensure, as far as possible, safety for the test subjects. Toxicity studies involve assessment of acute, repeated dose and chronic toxicities, evaluation of potential effects on vital organs, reproductive and developmental toxicity studies, and carcinogenicity studies. This book covers a limited number of areas of drug toxicity which address the major issues including registration requirements of new drugs and pharmacovigilance. It also provides an overview of the methodology and requirements of pre-clinical safety assessment of new medicines. Mechanisms by which drugs cause toxic effects in living organisms, and problems in the toxicity of specific agents are covered, as are regulatory issues, pharmacovigilence, and clinical toxicology. There is no other textbook at this level dedicated to pharmaceutical toxicology, and this new title in the "ULLA" series fills a definite gap in the market.

Pharmaceutical Press Traditional Medicine: A Global Perspective
This is a contributed text on traditional medicines throughout the world. Almost 20 years ago the World Health Organization estimated that 'In many countries, 80 per cent or more of the population living in rural areas are cared for by traditional practitioners and birth attendants'. It has since revised its view, adopting a rather safer position, now stating: 'most of the population of most developing countries regularly use traditional medicine'. Whereas most people use traditional medicine in developing countries, only a minority have regular access to reliable modern medical services. Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America use traditional medicine (TM) to help meet some of their primary health care needs. In Africa, up to 80 per cent of the population uses traditional medicine for primary health care. In industrialized countries, adaptations of traditional medicine are termed 'Complementary' or 'Alternative' (CAM). Over one-third of the population in developing countries lack access to essential medicines. The provision of safe and effective traditional medicine therapies could become a critical tool to increase access to health care.
