Mondadori Electa The Faces of Contemporary Cities
The story of Permasteelisa, an Italian company behind the facades of some of the most famous buildings in the world. The great global cities of the Western, Middle Eastern, and Asian world tend to resemble each other more and more. The new buildings of cities such as London, Hong Kong, New York, or Frankfurt are similar, and even the skylines increasingly seem to resemble one another. The fact that there are just a few great architects behind these constructions partly explains this phenomenon. This book reveals how the work of these architectural talents is also made possible by companies such as Permasteelisa, which offer technological solutions for constructing the most futuristic buildings. Permasteelisa produces continuous external cladding: the skin of skyscrapers, large airports, and current business centers. Drawing on its constant research into technology and materials, it collaborates with large architectural firms to transform an architect's project into a building. This

Mondadori Electa Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga
Eddy Kamuanga s large-scale figurative paintings display a wealth of historical understanding in a sophisticated interplay of strikingly coloured forms juxtaposed on grey negative space. Kamuanga s work taps into the rich, yet complex colonial history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, (DRC). His politically nuanced and culturally sensitive work explores the seismic shifts in economic, political and cultural identity in the DRC since colonization. Increasingly globalized in outlook, many in the DRC today are rejecting their ancestral heritage in favour of modernity, a conflict that fuels Kamuanga s work. The DRC is the world s largest exporter of coltan, a mineral critical to the production of computer chips and mobile phones. In all Kamuanga s works, the skin of each figure is embedded with integrated circuits, referring to the harsh conditions experienced by workers who mine coltan by hand. Eddy Kamuanga has been recognized internationally as one of the most interesting, young, contemporary African talents of today and his reputation is fast growing worldwide. His work has been shown across Africa, notably at Zeitz MOCAA, South Africa, and has been included in exhibitions in Europe and the United States, at institutions such as the Fowler Museum, UCLA, Los Angeles, (CA); the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, (NH); the Saatchi Gallery; and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga is represented by October Gallery, London, UK.

Mondadori Electa Reinventing Cultural Architecture: A Radical Vision by OPEN
Drawing on a series of conversations and site visits to six recent groundbreaking projects, architecture writer Catherine Shaw describes how Beijing-based OPEN Architecture is reinventing and responding to China s complex and fast-changing cultural landscape with projects that mark a new era for contemporary Chinese cultural architecture. OPEN Architecture was founded in New York in 2003 by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, while their Beijing office opened in 2008. From a contemporary art gallery buried beneath a sand dune to a sculptural open-air theatre in a remote mountain valley near the Great Wall, co-founders Li Hu and Huang Wenjing re-evaluate conventional Western assumptions about culture and design as they base each pioneering project on the needs and plea-sures of humanity within the context of diverse terrains and climates. In doing so, they not only consider how cultural architecture looks, but how it works. Projects are presented with commentary and contextual information as well as new analyses and archival material, including outstanding colour photography, plans and drawings, and exploratory sketches. This book provides a fresh perspective on contemporary cultural architecture and place making, hig-lighting the architects sources of inspiration, their challenges, and their construction methods, showing how each impactful project responds to China s distinctive context.

Mondadori Electa Nyoman Masriadi: Telepathy Contact
This stunning volume comprehensively tackles Nyoman Masriadi s artistic universe, which is considered to be among those that have most strongly impacted the definition of the new art of Southeast Asia. He is Southeast Asia s most well-received contemporary artist at auctions, and the first living Southeast Asian artist whose work has topped $1 million at auction. Masriadi s paintings frequently depict superhuman figures whose narratives, while rooted in Indonesian cultural history, offer witty and often biting social commentary on contemporary life and global pop culture. Through his expert control of light, shadow, and volume, Masriadi endows the monumental characters of his works with a sculptural, almost three-dimensional presence. Sometimes these characters appear in the archetypal roles of comic-book heroes, cowboys, soldiers, and athletes; but just as frequently, they are simply powerfully built people engaged in solitary acts of strength or captured in private moments of vulnerability.

Mondadori Electa Dear Elio: A Marvellous Journey into the World of Fiorucci
The fashion and stores created by Elio Fiorucci in the late 1960s were a great creative hotbed for the following decades, anticipating many of the trends that emerged later and the ideas of the next generation of designers. Elio Fiorucci s innate curiosity led him to explore the unknown, to broaden his vision towards new currents of freedom of expression, beyond the borders of his country, in search of other energies. This book recalls his new, joyful, mocking, free realm, and the conception of unconventional clothing that upset the rules of the bourgeois, conformist world of the 1960s. It is a choral fresco, told through the letters of those who worked with him, including absolute beginners, professionals who knew him and shared his passions, family, and friends: architects such as Antonio Citterio and Michele De Lucchi, photographers, artists (Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, who decorated the entire Milan store in 1983), singers, and actors who attended his stores and parties. Direct testimonials come from the likes of Biba (Barbara Hulanicki), Oliviero Toscani, Donna Jordan, Terry Jones, Italo Lupi, Alessandro Mendini, Paul Caranicas and Joey Arias. The book also features a preface by Janie and Stephen Schaeffer, the current brand owners.

This book proposes a photographic itinerary that unfurls through Venice, Treviso, Verona and Bologna, before reaching the Dolomites. Mondadori Electa West Kowloon Station: Andrew Bromberg at Aedas
The is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal in Hong Kong, completed in 2018, with a rare glimpse at all stages of plans, design, and construction. Located centrally in Hong Kong, this is the largest below ground station in the world. The high-speed rail terminus station will connect Hong Kong to Beijing with the largest rail network in history, expected to strengthen the city s strategic position as the southern gateway of China. West Kowloon Station enjoys a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline, but when Bromberg s team entered the competition to design it, they encountered a problem the station is mostly 100 feet belowground. His solution was to ensure the station was civic-minded and to create a large volume capped by a shell-like dome that rises from the earth, capturing daylight and sending it deep underground. Even as they stand on the subterranean concourse, passengers can catch a glimpse of Victoria Peak and the city s tallest buildings. In order to keep the space open and airy, Bromberg minimized the number of columns needed to support the vast atrium. His team devised a system that branches out, giving the organic appearance that complements the sweep of the station roof. This book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building as well as an interview with the architect.

Mondadori Electa Alexander Ponomarev: The Second Voyage
Alexander Ponomarev is one of Russia s most widely known contemporary artists, renowned both at home and abroad. In 2014, he was featured in Time magazine as one of the 100 Leading Global Thinkers thanks to the vast range of devices he employs to express his ideas, such as drawings, vast, complex installations, and a variety of technologies. He also captures some of the planet s most extreme and least accessible landscapes, symbolizing what he views as a world that is culturally and morally adrift. The themes he tackles are those he considers of critical relevance to today s world: the rapport between science and art, the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic, the retrieval of ancient engineering traditions vs. today s advanced technologies, and the crucial and urgent issue of climate change. The volume includes two ample introductory essays describing his position in the Russian context of art production over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and his roots in the artistic and humanist culture of the early modern era (Vitruvius, Leonardo, Titian, and the major geographical explorations, etc.).

Mondadori Electa Villa Albani Torlonia: The Cradle of Neoclassicism
Villa Albani Torlonia, with its collections, the Italian garden, and the hemicycle of the Kaffeehaus, is a sublime testimony of that particular antiquarian taste which came to the fore in the mid-eighteenth century, that for which Rome became a favourite destination on the Grand Tour. The classicist dream of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692 1779), was preserved thanks to the Torlonia family, who purchased the villa in 1866, enlarging the collection and the gardens and restoring the most important cardinal residence of the eighteenth century. More than 300 images by the great Italian master Massimo Listri recount the history of this extraordinary cultural heritage for the very first time. An immersive journey leads the reader between its collections of ancient masterpieces. Statues, bas-reliefs, and fountains are ensconced between the various buildings and gardens of the villa in a composition of environments, landscapes, and works of art forever waiting to be discovered.

Mondadori Electa Asylum
More the 40 percent of the countries in the world today still impose prison sentences or the death penalty just for being LGBTIQ+. Asylum is an international project that arose from a collaboration between five associations around the world and photographer Umberto Nicola Nicoletti. Through the use of beautiful 'glossy images, such as those used in fashion and advertising, the project seeks to engender empathy for the subjects involved and their stories. Asylum seekers become celebrities, idols, and heroes as they are. Therefore, it is not photographic reportage but, rather, an art project focused on restoring their dignity. LGBTIQ+ refugees often face double discrimination: in their home country and in their destination, as they are both immigrants and LGBTIQ+. This is especially true in refugee camps, where they are subject to assaults by other migrants. The aim of this project is to give these individuals the identity they are often deprived of when they are reduced to an indistinct mass and to show the world their true beauty.
