The Waldfrieden Sculpture Park is honouring the great painter and sculptor Heinz Mack on his 90th birthday with an exhibition devoted exclusively to his sculptural work. In its three exhibition halls and in the open grounds, the sculpture park presents 50 sculptures by Heinz Mack, including numerous works that have never been shown publicly before. Accompanying the exhibition is this comprehensive catalogue in German and English with numerous illustrations from the exhibition, a foreword by Anthony Cragg, a preface by Dr. Thomas A. Lange, two statements by Heinz Mack and essays by Heinz-Norbert Jocks, Norman Rosenthal, Corinna Thierolf and Jon Wood. The essays - analogous to the illustration section, which shows photographs from all three exhibition pavilions and from the outdoor area - are devoted to the artist's wealth of forms and diversity of materials on the basis of the exhibited stone works, steles made of wood and metal, metal reliefs and screens.

“There is no substitute for the happiness which colours give me.” After a long break, Heinz Mack has been focusing intensively on painting again for over thirty years. A cross-section of his "Chromatische Konstellationen" from 1991 until the present day shows how he translates the greatest possible purity of colour, light and immateriality into a broad spectrum of colour sequences and structures. Texts by Heinz Mack and Robert Fleck illuminate the essence of these colour worlds. Colour as light and light as colour – this represents, as it were, the nucleus of Mack’s painting. Like many great artists, Heinz Mack also found inspiration in African art. His artistic expeditions into the African desert and his encounters with the special light, the people and the architecture have continued to influence his art to this day. His collection of African art is being published for the first time. Since 1955 Heinz Mack has undertaken artistic expeditions into the deserts of Africa. It was here that he created his Sahara Project, with which he became a pioneer of Land Art. During his travels he purchased works by African artists which moved him, aroused his curiosity about foreign objects and which were then absorbed naturally into his life and work. The ornamental, sculptural and woven works by unknown African artists inspired Mack, and their power has been integrated into his own works on a subconscious level. The collection includes sculptures and objects made of wood, clay or metal – materials which are also characteristic for the reception of Mack’s art.

Heinz Mack’s Sahara Project is legendary. In 1968 he installed for the first time light columns with a height of up to 11 metres which reflected and mirrored the glaring sunlight in the Tunisian desert. Nature and object fused to create an artwork of breath-taking beauty. This comprehensive volume records the history and ideas of this spectacular project over four decades. Sophia Sotke’s in-depth presentation traces an arc from the conception of the project in 1958/59 via the sensational film Tele-Mack (1968) and the subsequent “Expedition into Artificial Gardens” of 1976 in Algeria andGreenland to the artistic experiments which Mack carried out in the Wahiba Desert in Oman in 1997. A1 - The Great North Road was Paul Graham's first book, published in 1983. Despite the UK having a vibrant photographic scene at the time, there were only handful of monographic books - Chris Killip and Martin Parr had one each - and no dedicated publishers or distributors. Graham had to self-publish A1, but as the first colour book, it had a startling impact on British photography. Uniting the tradition of social documentary with the fresh approach of new colour, A1 - The Great North Road was transformative on photography in the UK and paved the way for a new generation of British colour photographers to emerge, from Nick Waplington to Anna Fox, Richard Billingham to Tom Wood. Spanning the full length of England and into Edinburgh, Graham travelled repeatedly along the 'Great North Road' with a large format camera, to record the people, buildings, and landscape of early 1980's Britain. Now 40 years old, this book is as much art as it is a historical document of the years of Margaret Thatcher’s government and the UK’s declining industrial base. Graham went on to complete Beyond Caring (1985) and Troubled Land (1986), both of which became iconic bodies of work. Originally self-published and now rare, Graham's 1980's trilogy of books will be re-published over the coming years by MACK.

Born in Scandiano in 1943, Luigi Ghirri spent his working life in the Emilia Romagna region, where he produced one of the most open and layered bodies of work in the history of photography. He was published and exhibited extensively both in Italy and internationally and was at the height of his career at the time of his death in 1992. His first book, Kodachrome (1978), an avant-garde manifesto for the medium of photography and a landmark in his own remarkable oeuvre, was re-published by MACK in 2012.

With Songbook, Soth has stripped these pictures of their news context in order to highlight the longing for connection at their root. Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and Sao Paulo Biennials. In 2010, the Walker Art Center produced a traveling survey exhibition of Soth’s work entitled From Here To There. The body of the seafarer is a fulcrum upon which global systems of power, longstanding maritime traditions, and gendered and racialised pressures all rest. In this vital new essay, scholar Laleh Khalili draws on her ongoing research and experiences of travelling on cargo ships to explore the embodied life of these labourers. Di sguincio - meaning aslant, asquint, or seen from the corner of an eye - brings together more than a hundred black-and-white photo-graphs made by Guido Guidi with small-format cameras between 1969 and 1981. These images record experimental early dialogues between Guidi and his camera: made without looking through the viewfinder and lit with a bright flash, they capture people, bodies, gestures, minor events, and fragments of space in moments of sudden and even abrasive encounter. While formally stark and even verging on the abstract, they document people and places close at hand - his family home in Cesena; friends with whom he shared an apartment in Treviso; colleagues at the Institute of Architecture at the University of Venice - forming affectionate personal works which explore the performative tension at the heart of images. This book reproduces Guidi's own prints from the period, with their high contrast, unusual blurring and definition, and oblique, occasionally indiscernible handwritten annotations. Evoking the joys of invention and collaboration early in an artistic career, these fragments equally reflect the psychological, social, and political turmoil of Italy in an era of crisis and contestation of social values, metabolising the influences of neorealism and postmodernism in the search for new forms. The fundamental photographic theme of time - as it is recorded, experienced, and manipulated - is their elusive constant. With Di sguincio, we discover a set of anti-documents or anachronistic records - stamped, annotated, and sometimes artificially aged - which comment wryly on photography's claims to truth and reveal the foundations of a lifelong engagement with the possibilities of the medium.

The Shabbiness of Beauty is a visual dialogue that crosses generational divides with the easy intimacy of a late-night phone call. Multidisciplinary artist Moyra Davey delved into Peter Hujar’s archives and emerged mainly with little-known, scarcely seen images. In response to these, Davey created her own images that draw out an idiosyncratic selection of shared subjects. Side by side, the powerfully composed images admire, tease, and enhance one another in the manner of fierce friends, forming a visual exploration of physicality and sexuality that crackles with wit, tenderness, and perspicacity. Spiritually anchored in New York City – even as they range out to rural corners of Quebec and Pennsylvania – these images crystallise tensions between city and country, human and animal. Nudes pose with unruly chickens; human bodies are abstracted toward topography; seascapes and urban landscapes share the same tremulous plasticity. These continuities are punctuated by stark differences of approach: Davey’s self-aware postmodernism against Hujar’s humanism and embrace of darkroom manipulation. The rich dialogue between these photographs is personal and angular, ultimately offering an illuminating reintroduction to each celebrated artist through communion with the other’s work.

Ouarzazate is a small city in the Moroccan desert famous for its movie studios and filming locations, an industry which began with David Lean and Lawrence of Arabia. Invited by the American Friends of the Marrakech Museum for Photography and the Visual Arts to propose a project for his artist residency there, Ruwedel photographed the movie sets in 2014 and 2016. Much of the filming activity in Ouarzazate has been for costume and Biblical epics. Cleopatra, The Garden of Eden, The Mummy, The Last Temptation of Christ; but also The Sheltering Sky and The Hills Have Eyes. Many of the sets appear to have been abandoned while others are constantly repurposed. An Egyptian portal leads to a medieval village. An authentic Kasbah in ruins is actually a ruined replica of a “real” Kasbah elsewhere. Shepherds drive their flocks past “ancient” siege machines and Roman columns. “I was reminded of certain passages in Nathaniel West’s Day of the Locust.” Far from the American deserts where he has produced much of his work of the past thirty years, in Morocco Ruwedel continues his long term interest in contemporary ruins and the histories of both landscape and landscape photography. The photographs are eerily reminiscent of 19th century European photography of ancient Egypt and the Middle East.
