The mother is oblivious of the impact her homilies are having on Kevin. Eventually, Kevin's mental picture of Great Uncle Stanley is as grotesque as Dorian Gray's portrait after a particularly hedonistic session. When his mother announces that Great Uncle Stanley has paid them an unexpected call, Kevin's reaction is to run screaming from this hideous apparition. This book explores the history of the furniture manufacturer Harris Lebus from 1840 to 1970. Four generations of the Lebus family were engaged in the business which evolved from a family partnership into a public company. Oliver Lebus was chairman when the company ceased cabinet furniture manufacturing at Tottenham Hale in 1970. Using personal testimonies from those who were there, aspects of the story of 'the largest furniture factory' in the world are told through their eyes and using, in as far as possible, their own words.On a relatively, unremarkable North London Street, at Tottenham Hale, a set of railings stops short at a bricked wall on which a metal gatepost is affixed - this was the Ferry Lane entrance to Harris Lebus 'the largest furniture factory in the world'. Beyond the solitary post, a sloped, grass verge leads to a pleasant, low-rise housing built in the 1970's - Ferry Lane estate, and it is hard to imagine that this was once a bustling, energised furniture manufacturing hub. For seventy years furniture flowed on conveyor belts, and through a tunnel under Ferry Lane as the factory expanded in the fifties to occupy what is now Hale Village. During both World Wars the parts for wooden aircraft were made and assembled in huge workshops that were shrouded in secrecy. With the discovery of the factory underground war shelters in 2008 under what is now Hale Village and a subsequent Lebus exhibition curated by Haringey Local History Archives, interest was generated in this aspect of history and which has subsequently gathered momentum. Thousands of workers, each living individual lives came from near and far to spend their working days at Lebus. Many formed lifelong friendships, and just as four generations of the Lebus family spent their working lives in the factory, so too did successive generations of other families. Seemingly forgotten in the passing of time, they all left an indelible mark in this history. And in the case of some, their identities now emerge as their stories are explored; they are brought back to life telling their experiences in their own words. This is Paul Collier's first foray into authorship. In 2008, shortly after moving to Ferry Lane estate, Paul made a connection with Oliver Lebus, then in his nineties and who was the last family member of four generations at the company. They formed a special friendship and over several afternoons at his home in Kensington, Oliver introduced the author to his personal archives on which the foundations of this book were laid. This book charts the lives and service careers of the three Muller-Rowland brothers who gave their lives for their country. Between two of them they earned a DSO, two DFCs and two Bars, and a King’s Commendation for Valuable Services in the Air. All three brothers flew low-level operations in three different theatres during the Second World War. Eric and Stanley did not survive the War, Stanley’s twin went on to become a test pilot in 1948, still the early days of jet aircraft. The risks were enormous, and he realised that. Sadly, this was to cost him his life. “They were three boys with a passion for flying that seems to have known no bounds, a passion that they presumably shared with many of ‘the few’. The post-war years saw a massive decline in the Lea Valley’s industrial base. This was particularly marked by the collapse in furniture, electronics and electrical manufacturing that had been affected by cheap imports from countries abroad who had developed and streamlined their industries during the war years. Also affecting the collapse was a reluctance by some British manufacturers to invest and update their businesses in the light of the increasing overseas competition. However, in recent years the Lea Valley has seen a marked increase in the manufacture, development and distribution of food and drink products within the region. This upsurge has, in a way, complemented the work of earlier food and drink producers, several of whom have increased their product range and are now not only supplying and sustaining the British consumer markets, but also a number of markets overseas. This book not only uncovers the Lea Valley’s emerging food and drink industry, but also highlights the history of those regional establishments that provided sustenance for earlier generations. While it is not possible to cover every food retailer, manufacturer, wholesaler and microbrewery within the Lea Valley region, it is hoped that those establishments mentioned in this book will give the reader a “flavour” of how the valley’s food and drink industries are evolving and changing. In Atomic Blackmail? Simon Bennett examines the very real possibility of the ‘weaponisation’ of nuclear facilities during the Russia-Ukraine War. The War is being fought in proximity to nuclear facilities and working nuclear power stations, including the six-reactor Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Europe’s largest, and the decommissioned four-reactor Chernobyl NPP that, in 1986, suffered a catastrophic failure that released radioactive contamination across much of Europe. In 1985, foreign affairs and nuclear expert Bennett Ramberg published Nuclear Power Plants: An Unrecognised Military Peril. In his visionary discourse, Ramberg posited that in future wars, regional or global, nuclear facilities and powerplants might be weaponised to gain political traction over an opponent and neutralise opposing forces’ capacity for battlefield manoeuvre. While, at the time of writing Atomic Blackmail?, none of Ukraine’s fifteen reactors had been damaged in an exchange of fire, the possibility remains that this could happen during Ukraine’s 2023, and subsequent, offensives to expel Russian forces from sovereign Ukrainian territory. Though Ramberg’s nightmare vision of destroyed NPPs rendering a country uninhabitable has not, yet, been realised in the Russia-Ukraine War, the longer and more intense the conflict, the greater the likelihood that one or more of Ukraine’s NPPs will be damaged or, via a credible sabotage threat, used to leverage tactical or strategic advantage.
