Alex Katz celebrates an old friendship, illustrating Brainard’s 1970s journals with charcoal flower drawings In this tender posthumous collaboration initiated by Alex Katz (born 1927), the artist embellishes journal entries by his old friend Joe Brainard (1941–94) with a new series of exquisite charcoal drawings of flowers (a popular motif in Brainard’s own art). Katz and Brainard often collaborated with poets—particularly those of the New York School, such as Ted Berrigan, Anne Waldman and Ron Padgett—on artists' books, poetry publications, book covers, writings and paintings. Brainard’s journal entries in this volume, written between 1971 and 1972, express this milieu, with accounts of conversations and expeditions with Waldman and Padgett as well as frequent mention of his appreciation for Katz’s work: “How Alex has remained so pure all these years is beyond me,” he notes in one entry, enumerating his favorite Katz works. In the 1950s the hospital Berlin-Havelhöhe (today the Clinic for Anthropo-sophical Medicine) took over the building that had originally been erected as the National Socialist State Academy for Aviation. It was also there that the pilots who had attacked Guernica in 1934 as part of the Condor Legion had been trained. In 1960, Benjamin Katz fell ill with tuberculosis for a period of one and a half years. He stayed in Havelhöhe and produced an extensive collection of photographs during this time. 48 enlargements together with 380 working prints from the negatives on 30 facsimiled DIN-A4 pages document on the one hand the everyday routine as a patient, but also the architecture and the traces of National Socialism.

Before the rise of Pop Art proper, Alex Katz developed an iconic style of figurative painting in the early 1960s— influenced by film, television, and billboard advertising. Walker Evans in his own words: the legendary interview, back in print In 1971, Art in America published an interview with Walker Evans conducted by Leslie George Katz, writer and publisher of the Eakins Press. Mel Katz is a highly regarded Portland sculptor and teacher whose work is firmly rooted in the principles of geometric abstraction. He moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1964 to teach at Portland State University, where he taught for the next thirty-two years. He helped found the Portland Center for the Visual Arts in 1971, one of the first alternative artist spaces in the country. Originally trained as a painter, Katz has produced a remarkable body of work over the past fifty years that reflects his unique journey from painter to sculptor, working in many different media, including polyurethane, fiberglass, wood, formica, steel, and aluminum. Katz has been featured in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including the First Western States Biennial. He was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Portland Art Museum in 1988 and was included in the traveling exhibition, Still Working, in 1994. His work is included in the collections of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Oregon Arts Commission, the City of Seattle, and many national corporations.

Since Alex Katz first painted the Paul Taylor in 1959, he has invited dancers to model for him. Dance, according to the artist, belongs to the same long tradition of gestures as painting. This publication is the first to examine the many decades of Katz s work for the stage, including the ways that he introduced tenets of postwar painting into theatre and dance aesthetics. I d never seen anything like it, Katz recalls of his first encounter with the work of dancer and choreographer Paul Taylor. The two partnered on fifteen productions for which Katz innovated with flat lighting, humorous obstacles, and framing mechanisms. His involvement with Paul Taylor led to collaborations with other companies including Yoshiko Chuma, Laura Dean, William Dunas, and Parsons. Among Katz s most celebrated sets is the ensemble of cutouts he created for Kenneth Koch s 1961 production, George Washington Crossing the Delaware. Katz heightened the absurdity of the Revolutionary War-inspired play with Pop-adjacent figures and props. This publication brings together paintings, sketches, costumes, photographs, film stills, and ephemera. Newly-commissioned essays, unpublished materials, and major paintings will provide an overview of Katz s working relationships with individual choreographers and shed new light on avant-garde collaborations in New York between the 1960s and 80s.
