This volume continues the ceramic history of the Saqqara Anubis temple, excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society from 1977 to 1979. Volume IV covers the Late Dynastic Period. From at least the mid- 6th century BC onwards, burials appear to have been made in the earlier shaft tombs as well as in a new cemetery in the sand. A temple to Anubis, god of the dead, was commenced at the same time, abandoned during the Persian Period but restarted around 400 BC. The ceramics include bowls used by the embalmers as well as offering vessels and the repertoire of the fourth century builders.

The 4th British Egyptology Congress (BEC 4) was held in September 2018 at the University of Manchester, allowing scholars from around the world to present their latest and ongoing research to their peers. Eighty-two papers were presented, including four keynote speeches, covering the full spectrum of Egyptology, archaeology, museology, and the history of travel along the Nile. The 13 papers included in this volume are representative of the wide variety of research discussed during BEC 4, reflecting the current studies of their authors. It is hoped that providing a publication platform through these Proceedings will stimulate further dialogue and investigation.

This volume completes the documentation of excavations at the Nubian site of Qasr Ibrim conducted by the Egypt Exploration Society, continuing the tradition of documenting the history and archaeology of the site phase-by-phase. Previous monographs dealt with the Ballaña phase (c. AD 350–600), the earlier (c. 600–1172) and the later medieval period (c. 1172–1500). The present work carries the story forward to the final abandonment of the site in AD 1812, the period when Lower Nubia was annexed to the Ottoman Empire, and an Ottoman garrison was installed at Qasr Ibrim. This volume presents the blue-painted pottery from the EES excavations at Kom Rabia, one of the few specific site collections that spans the entire period of manufacture of this distinctive type of ceramics. All of the fragments studied by the author are presented within their find contexts arranged according to the main chronological phases into which activity at the site can be divided. Despite the fragmentary nature of the material, which does not permit a detailed discussion of its morphological evolution, it does enable a comparison of the decorative motifs with material from other major sites such as Amarna, Karnak, Malkata and Qantir. From this, it is possible to assess whether there was a Memphite production centre and how the Kom Rabia assemblage compares qualitatively and quantitatively to the others. The volume presents the first comprehensive multi-site listing of the decorative motifs.

From 2005 to 2009 a survey and excavation project was undertaken at the Stone Village, a small settlement on the eastern desert plain of Amarna, not far from the Workmen’s Village. This was the first concerted effort to record this site, and introduce it into the story of Amarna. The fieldwork revealed a community of labourers likely engaged in tomb-cutting and related tasks, including at the Royal Tombs, but of lesser social standing than the occupants of the Workmen’s Village. The piecing together of diverse strands of archaeological evidence sheds light on their experiences, the Stone Village serving jointly as a new source for the study of Amarna’s vernacular urban architecture. The results of the fieldwork are presented in two volumes, the first devoted to the survey, excavation and architecture, and the second to the faunal and botanical remains, and objects.

This volume presents the pottery from the tomb of Maya and Meryt (located in the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara) in its archaeological context. Volume I was devoted to the reliefs, and volume II to the objects and skeletal remains from the tomb. The closely dated burial assemblage of Maya (Year 9 of Horemheb) and associated offering pottery form the basis for tracing the development of pottery forms in the late Eighteenth Dynasty and continuing into the Ramesside Period. The wealth of blue-painted pottery (amounting to 187 vessels) is carefully described, the motifs represented in the designs are discussed, and aspects of the chronological development of blue-painted pottery are illustrated. 96 colour photographs are included showing many of these beautiful blue-painted vessels. Numerous inscriptions on the pottery provide interesting information on the actual contents of the vessels provided for Maya's burial.

The dry height of the site of Qasr Ibrim above the Nile river has resulted in superb preservation of organic material. The textile collections from the excavations have already become one of the largest from any site in the middle Nile valley. They are unique as an unmatched sequence, dating from the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty to the Late Ottoman Period (750 - 656 BC) and ranging from the domestic remains of town life and tiny exotic imports of the sites great years to the cast off garments and furnishings, pitifully mended and re-mended, from ages of disaster and decline. The important textiles from the Cathedral Cemetery at Qasr Ibrim, including those from the burial of Bishop Timotheus, are published here with detailed descriptions and a photographic record of the most significant pieces.

This is the second volume on the monastic site of Kom el-Nana at Tell el-Amarna and brings up-to-date the excavations carried out there. The first volume contained mainly unstratified pottery and no glass, and included some of the Late Roman sites around Amarna. This volume brings together the stratified pottery and both stratified and unstratified glass. Due to the incomplete nature of the excavations at present (only around a third of the monastery has so far been excavated) and the time elapsed since abandonment, the conclusions reached on the dating of the site may well have to be revised in future. In the meantime, the collections of pottery and glass will, hopefully, prove useful for those working in the Middle East and especially in Egypt.

This volume features all the graffiti from the Baboon and Falcon galleries at the Sacred Animal Necropolis, North Saqqara, excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society by Bryan Emery between 1966 and 1971. The graffiti include dedications to the god Imhotep with an important historical content, and masons' marks which show some of the construction history of the galleries. There is also a Greek graffito listing the contents of dreams or visions, and a series of dedications on bronze temple furniture which mention a hitherto unknown god. Jars with hieroglyphic signs shed light on one of the main characters found in the Greek Hermetic literature, and a selection of ostraca give insights into the management of the animal cults.

This sixth volume in the 'Survey of Memphis' series, by Lisa Giddy, describes the late Middle Kingdom levels excavated in the 1980s at Kom Rabi'a, Memphis, by the Egypt Exploration Society team. Following an introduction outlining the Society's work at Kom Rabi'a and summarising the extant Middle Kingdom remains at Memphis as a whole, there is a detailed description of the late Middle Kingdom stratigraphy revealed at Kom Rabi'a, accompanied by in-text figures illustrating the salient characteristics of each level in the six sectors investigated. Complete lists of the contexts excavated and objects discovered are provided. There follows a reconstruction of events across the site, and a final essay evaluating the importance of Kom Rabi'a for our understanding of late Middle Kingdom Memphis.

The Mother of Apis inscriptions (534-41 BC), found in 1966-71 in and outside the Mother of Apis Catacomb at North Saqqara by the Egypt Exploration Society, comprise the stelae and graffiti of the masons who constructed the catacomb and of the priests who oversaw the work and conducted the burial and other rituals for the cows. The texts include genealogies of the masons and some accounts of their work and rations. As well as their scientific importance for the understanding of Egyptian sacred animal cults, social life and chronology, they have a strong human interest. This study includes transliterations, translations and explanatory notes on all the texts found, together with commentaries and indexes. This book draws together the records from the excavations in the area of the Meroitic temple complex at Qasr Ibrim that took place mainly in the 1970s. This is the only major temple complex in Lower Nubia excavated in modern times. It provides an account of the excavations, as well as studies of the temple's painted decoration, the numerous graffiti on its walls and floors, and its fixtures and fittings, including several monumental Meroitic stelae. It highlights the role of the temple as a point of contact between Roman Egypt and the Meroitic Sudanese state.

P.Oxy. LXXXIV marks a new departure for the series: it is the first to publish texts in Egyptian. One is a Greek–Coptic paraphrase of Homer's Iliad, the other a sale of house property in Demotic accompanied by a Greek tax receipt. Section I presents extensive remains of a set of codices of the Septuagint. Section II includes a miscellany of new literary and subliterary texts: remnants of post-Classical hexameter poetry, a possible fragment of Middle comedy with an Anacreontic theme, and a cento of Homeric verses on the myth of Daphne. The seventeen papyri of Apollonius Rhodius published in Section III, providing some two dozen new readings, confirm the Argonautica's status as the most popular epic poem in Roman Egypt after the Homeric and Hesiodic classics. The papyri of Apollonius are complemented by a painting of a wheeled float carrying the Argonauts, perhaps an illustration of a local spectacle. Section IV publishes twenty declarations of livestock from the first and second centuries, and the largest number of accounts from the 'Apion archive' since vol. XVI. The global figures for the Apion estate’s income, expenditure, and tax payments offer fresh data to steer and inform the lively debate about the economy of this prominent Oxyrhynchite institution.

This volume contains the first editions of 55 Greek literary and documentary papyri. The theological texts include fragments of Genesis and Luke, both assignable to the third century. Pride of place among the new literary texts is given to a retelling of Egyptian mythology, in which Isis writes to Arianis, appealing for his help in locating the body of Osiris. Two others are philosophical (Peripatetic and Stoic). Among the extant classical texts, large fragments of Plato’s Laches offer readings of particular interest. A paraphrase of Justinian’s Digest shows a professor explaining the relationship between written law and custom in a mixture of Greek and Graeco-Latin. The documents include a group of ten private letters and an elaborate first-person account of a failed attempt to buy camels for the state.

This volume, part of the wider EES publications on the site of Gebel el-Silsila, covers the results of the 1983 season at nearby Wadi Shatt el-Rigal, famous for its abundance of epigraphic records from the late Eleventh Dynasty. The reason for their presence in this remote site has remained an intriguing problem that has been much debated. Besides the three well-known royal reliefs of Mentuhotep II and Mentuhotep III, the mission under Ricardo Caminos and assisted by Jürgen Osing documented more than 800 inscriptions and rock-drawings, which until now have remained only partially published. Follow-up work in 2004 has allowed for checks on the previous work, which can now be made fully accessible.

Sais II: The Prehistoric Period publishes the EES/Durham/SCA excavations carried out in 2007 in the ‘Great Pit’ at Sa el-Hagar, ancient Sais. It contains a full discussion of the layers dating to the Neolithic and Buto-Maadi Periods, with specialist reports on the chipped and ground stone tools, small finds, pottery, animal bones and flora. As the only Neolithic site so far excavated on the Nile floodplain in Egypt, the site has important implications for understanding the Neolithisation of the Delta and the development of Predynastic settlements in the north of Egypt.

This volume publishes the demotic ostraca discovered by the EES in the Sacred Animal Necropolis at North Saqqara more than thirty years ago. The majority of the four hundred plus ostraca published in this volume are written on potsherds but there are also limestone and gypsum plaster fragments, and writing-boards. Collectively, they preserve two different types of text: jar-labels or dockets originally written upon a complete vessel, and secondly compositions written upon a sherd that had already been broken from its parent vessel, or a flake of limestone or some similar material. The texts include literary and magical compositions, and a range of texts which argue for the existence of a scribal school of some kind. There is also a short oracular question, various dedications to the gods of the Necropolis, an appeal to the Mother of the Apis, lists of payments and divine images, and a document of self-sale or self-hire which is probably the earliest such document so far recognised. Some of the texts date from the Achaemenid period but the majority are undoubtedly Ptolemaic.

This volume adds - to previously published early Christian texts - four new papyri of the "Gospel of John" and also includes fragments of a lost play by Sophocles ("Epigonoi"), two prose works on Hellenistic historians and Hellenistic kings, a rhetorical exercise on speeches in Thucydides, and a lost novel with an Ionian setting. A further group of papyri of Iliad and related Homeric texts, include a paraphrase of "Iliad I" (its texts transmitted verbatim by at least two other papyri), scholia minora to "Iliad I", and commentaries on "Odyssey III and XV" with scholarly credentials. Documentary texts include declarations of livestock, loans, leases, and other contracts. Finally it records publication of a group of drawings that appeared outside the series but assigns Oxyrhynchus publication numbers to them for the first time. Images of the drawings were prepared for and will be published in the volume "Oxyrhynchus A City and its Texts" (GRM 93) and "Egyptian Archaeology 22".

The theological section includes large fragments of the First Apocalypse of James (5533), an early Christian narrative of conversations between Jesus and his brother, James. The Greek text is otherwise lost and scholars have depended on two often conflicting Coptic versions. The first of seven magical papyri is a second-century exorcism manual (5542), and a series of potted lives of the Successors of Alexander the Great illuminates the history of ancient life-writing before Plutarch (5535). A fragment of commentary on Aristophanes (5536) and five grammatical texts (5537-41) complete Section II. Section III provides a mass of new evidence concerning slavery in the Roman world. The photographs show all the new theological, literary, and subliterary texts, and eleven of the documents.
