For centuries barns served many functions: housing for animals, storage for equipment, and graineries. Farmers threshed grain on barn floors, stored hay for feeding livestock in lofts, and sheltered animals in stalls. To farmers, barns were as essential as the houses they lived in. To many barns represent tradition, hard work and independence. These associations are just as much a part of the barn as its framework and its roofing. The barn was also the heart of the farm and a vital center of community life. It was a place for dancing, praying, and a place for children to play. For Summers County, West Virginia, the vernacular structures were recalled and a "barn raisin" ensued. The objective of the project was not to raise the sides of a building......but to help raise awareness of the importance of preservation of our barns, the history of our people as well as our libraries.

During the summer of 1955, death came to town. Reporters circled soon after. Some would snatch tidbits and fly away; others would stay for the full feast. The first body was embedded into the soil of a field of dandelions, grass, weeds, and stalks of volunteer corn. Hidden like a bug crushed by a rolling pin into soft dough. The earth, unlike dough, was more accepting of the intruder. It sipped from the offering before scavengers could deprive it of its due. A herd of cows retreated to a more distant piece of their world of square corners and wire. The human, who provided them hay and a little treat of sweet feed, would become an occasional memory. For now, the body was undiscovered. Not yet noticed by birds or animals, spectators or police. Just a corpse, partially buried in a field.

8 March 1946 was a red letter day for Virginia. World War II heroes Winston Churchill and General Dwight Eisenhower visited Virginia. For Richmond photographer Frank Dementi it was also a red letter day, as Mr Dementi was the only photographer to record this visit. This book uses newspaper accounts and personal recollections to help recreate this event.

This book continues my celebration of cycling through my original watercol.ors created while races are being contested on the open road. The 2015 UCI Road World Championships took place on the streets of my adoptive home town of Richmond, Virginia. I created this artwork, from the epicenter of the championships, with everyone eagerly looking over my shoulder as they awaited the climax of the race and the unveiling of the winner of the coveted rainbow jersey. Perspectives on the journey of a Baseball Parent - From Little League, to the World Series, and everything in-between. From the start in 1989 as parents of then 6 year old Justin Verlander and later his younger brother Ben, and with little background or experience in any type of organised sports ourselves, we had no idea about the turn our lives were about to take when a neighbour from across the street suggested that our son Justin should sign up for Little League Baseball. In our wildest dreams we never would have imagined that 20 years later we would be receiving the Little League Parents of the Year Award in Willamsport, Pennsylvania. This is an honour bestowed annually on the parents of major league stars that played Little League Baseball. After over two decades spent raising two sons who have experienced great success both on and off the field, the term Baseball is Life has become much more than a cliché for the Verlander family. We have been touched by many life changing events that we were fortunate to experience, but often unprepared to handle. Looking back we were often blessed to be surrounded by many people who helped us by providing valuable insight in making decisions and dealing with situations that enabled us to put our boys in the best possible atmosphere to grow and develop their potential; both as athletes and young men. Other times we were just lucky. It was not always clear, that's for sure. This book was written in hopes that other parents raising young athletes can gain something from our experience and look back as we have, knowing that Baseball is a great metaphor for life and that lessons learned last a lifetime.
