Why do humans, uniquely among animals, cooperate in large numbers to advance projects for the common good? Why do policies and business practices that ignore the moral and generous side of human nature often fail? Should the idea of economic man—the amoral and self-interested Homo economicus—determine how we expect people to respond to monetary rewards, punishments, and other incentives? Most Americans strongly favor equality of opportunity if not outcome, but many are weary of poverty's seeming immunity to public policy. If family background is important in getting ahead, why? And if the processes that transmit economic status from parent to child are unfair, could public policy address the problem?
