Southern California Railways looks at the operations of some of the many railroads that serve the southern half of the Golden State. These include the passenger operations of Amtrak, Metrolink and San Diego Coaster and the freight operations of the Union Pacific and BNSF Railway as well as some short-line operators. The book shows some of the huge variety of trains and locomotives that ply their trade in the area. Author Richard Billingsley focuses on the area south of San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield, including Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as the Mojave Desert and Salton Sea and includes 180 stunning images documenting the railway scene.

CSX Transportation came to being in 1980 with the merger of Seaboard Coast Lines and the Chessie System, producing a system of over 21,000 route miles in twenty-four states, with incursions into two Canadian provinces. The system runs from Beauharnois, Quebec in the north to Miami, Florida in the south and covers much of the industrial north-east of the States, as well as the more rural areas that lead to the south-east of the country. Most of the locomotive fleet are now painted in a dark blue and yellow paint scheme, with earlier grey and blue schemes now almost extinct. Included in the book are images mainly from the southern division of the company’s operations. These feature all manner of freight operations, along with areas with trackage rights, short line railroads fed by the CSX system and Amtrak, and commuter rail operations that use CSX tracks and assets.

One minute you can be watching as a fast hotshot double-stack intermodal train carrying as many as 300 containers flies by at over 70 miles an hour; moments later and the local goods is in view, dropping a wagon or two into the local factory complex. This collection of photographs, mainly from the south-western states, was taken through the lens of a UK-based photographer and attempts to show the reader just a small selection of the scenes and variety that the Union Pacific has to offer.
