A diferencia de estudios previos, esta síntesis integra la evidencia histórica y arqueológica y analiza la situación del Reino Unido, Irlanda, la Europa continental y el norte de África, demostrando así que el Imperio romano y sus vecinos estaban inexplicablemente vinculados.
