The incidence of autoimmune diseases is increasing worldwide, and the search for better management of these diseases and even for a cure is being pursued by scientists from many disciplines. Tools from the areas of genetics, neuroscience, cell biology, virology, and infectious disease are being applied to the problem and are yielding useful results. This volume contains the first section of the proceedings of a large, comprehensive meeting held in Sorrento, Italy. Because the meeting focused on such an important area of human health, four volumes have been dedicated to it: Part A presents new principles in autoimmunity, including the roles of key players such as designed ankyrin repeat proteins, SLAM-associated protein, interleukin-12, human proteinase 3, the complement system, IgG, disturbances in cytokine synthesis, and IFN-γ blockers. The second section of the volume takes a look at new diagnostic tools, including screening of endothelial expression libraries, electrical skin impedance, and IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody assays. Only in very recent times have therapies been developed that are specific to a particular manifestation of autoimmune disease, and these have begun to replace the all-purpose remedies of the past 30 years. This volume, which draws on the principles of immunology presented in Volume 1050 (Autoimmunity: Concepts and Diagnosis at the Cutting Edge), extends these concepts to the realm of clinical findings and current therapy for many autoimmune and connective tissue disorders. Both organ-specific and organ-nonspecific diseases are covered, and one section is entirely focused on treatment. Treatments using cytokines, chemokines, cognate receptors, and genetic interactions are particularly prominent in these reports, and attention is also paid to the increasing use of intravenous imunoglobulins and both monoclonal and imunosuppressive agents. Contemporary media artist Claudia Schmitz (b. 1975) explores the limits and paradigms of media translation, both as a solo artist and through collaborative projects. Her work focuses on identity in virtual, expanded and real spaces, reactivity and interactivity, intermediality and transmediality, machine learning and artificial intelligence. She also examines issues of sustainability and synaesthetic experience and questions socio-urban structures and hegemonial perceptions. Tracing these boundaries, she develops spaces for transmedial experiences; pneumatic sculptures; multidimensional drawings. She also creates gustatory sculptures that develop their meaning on the viewer’s tongue. Invisyllables is the first volume in her monograph, which is based on the concept of an open archive. The three volumes in the archive, entitled Moving Space, Moving Air, Moving Line each convey alternative phenomenological depictions while reciprocally integrating the others. Invisyllables is dedicated to Moving Space and shows current series of work and collaborations of this internationally acclaimed artist.
