Although Lewis Mumford is widely acknowledged as the seminal American critic of architecture and urbanism in the twentieth century, he is less known for his art criticism. He began contributing to this field in the early 1920s, and his influence peaked between 1932 and 1937, when he was art critic for the New Yorker. This book, for the first time, assembles Mumford's important art criticism in a single volume. His columns bring wit and insight to bear on a range of artists, from establishment figures like Matisse and Brancusi to relatively new arrivals like Reginald Marsh and Georgia O'Keeffe.These articles provide an unusual window onto the New York art scene just as it was casting off provincialism in favor of a more international outlook. On a deeper level, the columns probe beneath the surface of modern art, revealing an alienation that Mumford believed symptomatic of a larger cultural disintegration. Mumford-Tate groups are the fundamental symmetry groups of Hodge theory, a subject which rests at the center of contemporary complex algebraic geometry. This book is the first comprehensive exploration of Mumford-Tate groups and domains. Containing basic theory and a wealth of new views and results, it will become an essential resource for graduate students and researchers. Although Mumford-Tate groups can be defined for general structures, their theory and use to date has mainly been in the classical case of abelian varieties. While the book does examine this area, it focuses on the nonclassical case. The general theory turns out to be very rich, such as in the unexpected connections of finite dimensional and infinite dimensional representation theory of real, semisimple Lie groups. The authors give the complete classification of Hodge representations, a topic that should become a standard in the finite-dimensional representation theory of noncompact, real, semisimple Lie groups. They also indicate that in the future, a connection seems ready to be made between Lie groups that admit discrete series representations and the study of automorphic cohomology on quotients of Mumford-Tate domains by arithmetic groups. Bringing together complex geometry, representation theory, and arithmetic, this book opens up a fresh perspective on an important subject.

Several generations of students of algebraic geometry have learned the subject from David Mumford's fabled "Red Book" containing notes of his lectures at Harvard University. Their genesis and evolution are described in the preface as:Initially notes to the course were mimeographed and bound and sold by the Harvard math department with a red cover. These old notes were picked up by Springer and are now sold as the "Red book of Varieties and Schemes". However, every time I taught the course, the content changed and grew. I had aimed to eventually publish more polished notes in three volumes...This book contains what Mumford had then intended to be Volume II. A tide mill or tidal mill is worked by harnessing the ebb and flow of the sea. They were situated on tidal river estuaries, away from the waves but near to the sea, and comprised of a mill, outbuildings, a dyke, dam or causeway and millpond beyond. Tide mills date from Saxon times, or even the Roman period. Most are now gone, but some can still be traced today as ruins, scanty remains and earthworks. Some are in use as homes, while in some cases only the millpond survives, often in use as a nature reserve, marina or yacht basin. It is said that Chichester Harbour has the largest concentration of tide mills in the country and at Eling, near Southampton, in Hampshire, a tide mill survives in working order to produce flour today. The old Flood Mill at Deptford was rebuilt as a steam flour mill, where only the Mumford's Mill still stands. This campaign, known as the General Resettlement of Indians, represented a turning point in the history of European colonialism: a state forcing an entire conquered society to change its way of life overnight. But while this radical restructuring destroyed certain aspects of indigenous society, Jeremy Ravi Mumford's Vertical Empire reveals the ways that it preserved others.
