Trotz der Entwicklung des jüdisch-christlichen Dialogs ist der Antisemitismus auch in Deutschland erschreckend gegenwärtig. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob Antijudaismus bzw. Antisemitismus im christlichen (evangelischen) Glauben selbst tiefer verankert ist, als es die Fortschritte im jüdisch-christlichen Dialog erwarten lassen. Michael Meyer-Blanck geht theologischen Tiefenstrukturen nach und achtet besonders auf prägende Texte und Gestalten wie das Johannesevangelium, Paulus, Luther, Schleiermacher, Stoecker, Nietzsche, Harnack, Bultmann. Antijudaismus und Antisemitismus ergeben sich aus mangelhaftem Denken und dem Festhalten an Vorurteilen. Nach dem grundlegenden ersten Kapitel, den Prolegomena, u.a. mit der Skizzierung reformatorischer und gegenwärtiger Denkbewegungen, folgt im zweiten Kapitel eine detaillierte Phänomenbeschreibung, bei der er zwischen dem Gebet als Handlung und dem Gebet als Haltung unterscheidet. Dazu gehört ein Blick u.a. auf Kunst, Musik, Literatur, Naturerleben, Gesundheit und die Leiblichkeit des Betens. Im dritten Kapitel bietet der Autor eine kurze Geschichte des Gebets, die von der Alten Kirche über das Mittelalter und die Reformation bis ins 18. und 19. Jahrhundert reicht. In der Neuzeit bildete sich eine zunehmende Scham gegenüber dem Beten, besonders gegenüber dem Bittgebet heraus. On Midsummer Eve, Miss Julie, the daughter of a count, sleeps with her father's valet, Jean. The subsequent conflict between sexual passion and social position, which leads to her suicide, is presented with startling modernity. The play's premiere at Strindberg's experimental theatre in Denmark in 1889 was banned by the censor and its first public production three years later in Berlin aroused such protests that it was withdrawn after one performance.
