Key Publishing Ltd RAF Aircraft of the Battle of Britain
Book SynopsisA photographic guide to surviving planes from the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain is widely considered to be Britain's finest hour. The 'Few' who so bravely fought to save the nation will not be forgotten, nor will they be around forever to recount the heroism of the summer of 1940 first-hand. In contrast, the number of restored and preserved aircraft in our museums and skies is at an all-time high. Authentic warbirds have never been better cared for and formations of 15 or more Spitfires and half a dozen Hurricanes are not unheard of at UK air shows. It is now left to the sights and sounds of these surviving aircraft to remind us of the sacrifices, daring and bravery of those who saved Britain from imminent invasion in 1940. This book features a brief history of all the front-line RAF fighter aircraft that were involved in the famous battle and explores some of the major training and support aeroplanes that contributed to the iconic events. The story is told using over 160 photographs of surviving and restored aircraft in the air, on the ground and in unique formations together. 160 illustrations

Key Publishing Ltd British Aircraft of World War One
Book SynopsisWorld War One took place just after the birth of powered flight, when aerial technology was still in its infancy. At the outbreak of war, the military potential of this novelty invention was not fully recognised until commanders began to use the aeroplane to see what the enemy was planning on the other side of the hill. During the course of the war, the role of the aeroplane evolved from a stable, lumbering observation platform to a more agile fighter, capable of shooting down another aircraft. In a bid to out-do the enemy, the ongoing arms race saw rapid developments in aeroplane technology, which led to an incredible array of ever-advancing aircraft seeing service during this time. This book features a potted history of the British aircraft that were involved in World War One. It includes the frontline fighters, bombers and reconnaissance aircraft that contributed to the iconic events between 1914 and 1918. The story is supported by high-quality images of surviving, reproduction, replica and restored aircraft.

Key Publishing Ltd British Interwar Aircraft
Book SynopsisWhen the RAF was formed in 1918, Great Britain boasted the largest air force in the world, but it was not to last. As soon as the armistice was declared, a rapid disarmament began. After a period of austerity, the surplus military aircraft formed the basis for civil aviation as we know it today. More people learned to fly, and pioneering individuals began to break down barriers and set records leading to a demand for purpose-built commercial, touring, racing and passenger aircraft. During the 1930s, the RAF boasted an array of beautiful silver biplanes, which soon gave way to more sleek monoplane fighters and medium-range bombers ready for the imminent war in Europe. This period is often referred to as the Golden Age of Aviation', and this book aims to capture that spirit. Exploring many significant British aircraft types that were active between World Wars One and Two, with the focus on modern-day survivors and replicas, this volume tells the story of how aviation changed during the period. Covering both civil and military aircraft types, the story is told using over 200 high-quality images of surviving, replica and restored aircraft.

Key Publishing Ltd British Aircraft of the Falklands War
Book SynopsisThe Falkland Islands is a remote British territory, about 8,000 miles from the UK mainland and just over 400 miles from the coast of Argentina. The ownership of the islands had long been disputed, but it reached a boiling point in March 1982, when a group of individuals raised the Argentine flag on South Georgia. Foreseeing a large-scale response from British forces, the Argentine government quickly ordered Operation Rosario, and, on 2 April 1982, undertook an amphibious invasion of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Retaking the islands posed a logistical nightmare for the British task force. Fortunately, halfway between Britain and the Falklands there was a small forward operating airfield on Ascension Island. At the time, many of the British aircraft did not have air-to-air refuelling capabilities and lacked the range to reach the South Atlantic. Nonetheless, a full-scale British invasion was planned, and, within just 74 days, the Argentine forces surrendered. This book features an informative history of the significant British aircraft types in service with the Royal Navy, RAF and Army Air Corps during the conflict. It covers some of the most iconic British aircraft ever built, including an eclectic mix of helicopters, the Avro Vulcan, Handley Page Victor and British Aerospace Sea Harrier. With over 150 high-quality images, this book showcases surviving aircraft and looks at where they are now, 40 years after the conflict.

Emerald Publishing Limited Transport and Climate Change
Book SynopsisTransport accounts for 23% of global carbon dioxide emissions and is one of the few industrial sectors where emissions are still growing. There is a pressing need for transport to begin reducing emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The world is already committed to some degree of climate change and there is an additional need to adapt transport networks to cope with the future climate. This book examines the relationship between transport and climate change at a range of scales and from a series of different perspectives. The complex post-Kyoto international situation is covered before the discussion at national and then regional levels. It is clear that every country needs strong national policy to deliver the required greenhouse gas emission reductions. The UK has been the first country to implement a legally binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This book uses a range of UK examples to provide a timely record of progress to date in meeting the demands of the agreement in terms of the mitigation of climate change. The importance of climate and socio-economic scenarios forms the basis of a series of additional discussions on climate change adaptation, underlining the need for a holistic framework to tackle climate change in the transport sector.Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction, Tim Ryley, Lee Chapman (pp. 1 - 8) Managing the Future: Models, Scenarios and the Control of Uncertainty Murray Goulden, Robert Dingwall (pp. 9 - 37) Chapter 3 An International Dimension: Aviation, Lucy Budd, Tim Ryley (pp. 39 - 64) Chapter 4 An International Dimension: Shipping, Kevin Cullinane (pp. 65 - 104) Chapter 5 The Impacts of Climate Change on National Road and Rail Networks, Elizabeth Hooper, Lee Chapman (pp. 105 - 136) Chapter 6 The Impacts of Climate Change on the National Freight Sector, David Jaroszweski (pp. 137 - 173) Chapter 7 The Role of Walking and Cycling in Reducing the Impacts of Climate Change, Colin G.
