Exisle Publishing The Welcome Cookies
Everyone enjoys the cosiness and friendliness of their favourite café. But what happens when the place you love suddenly changes?Mabel loves visiting Miss Plum's Sugar Plum Café and drawing pictures for the arty-smarty wall. But one day, Mabel finds the café under renovation by someone new. She misses her favourite café, and she misses Miss Plum's smiles. One day, the café reopens, and Mabel reluctantly visits there with her mother. Will this new place provide Mabel with the same joy she felt in the old place? And how will Mabel accept its differences? In The Welcome Cookies, Mabel witnesses what she perceives to be the destruction of a place she loved. The story shows how even though we can sometimes mourn the loss of a place and miss seeing people, if we open ourselves to new things, it can mean new beginnings and a chance for new friendships to develop. The story also shows how a child has the power to make someone feel special and welcome.<

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Case of the Chocolate Cream Killer: The Poisonous Passion of Christiana Edmunds
"The trial which terminated yesterday...revealed one of the strangest and most horrible stories possibly ever told in a court of justice." (Morning Post). When the news broke in 1871 of a series of mysterious poisonings in Brighton, shock and horror gripped the Victorian public. Even more disturbing was the revelation that the culprit was not a common criminal but rather a local 'lady of fortune' called Christiana Edmunds. From March 1871 Christiana had sent out dozens of poisoned chocolates and sweets to Brighton's residents. Her campaign resulted in the death of four-year-old holidaymaker Sidney Barker, and wounded countless others. Her arrest in August 1871 provoked such an emotional response from the local public that her trial was moved from Brighton to London's Old Bailey. The prosecution anticipated an easy victory. Christiana had not confessed, but witnesses confirmed that she had purchased strychnine and their testimonies placed her at the scene of the crimes. She had a motive too, argued the prosecution; she was a scorned woman.Despite the best efforts of the defence, the jury took only one hour to convict her of the murder of Sidney Barker and the attempted murder of three others. In a last dramatic twist, Christiana was reprieved after being declared insane by the Home Office and lived out her days in Broadmoor. Alongside Christiana's case, the book will offer a snapshot of life in Brighton, one of Victorian England's busiest and most popular leisure resorts. However, this wholesome holiday destination also had a steamy underworld of sexual licence, which reached even seemingly secure middle-class young women.

Pro Lingua Learning A to Z Picture Activities for Literacy: Phonics and Vocabulary for Emerging Readers
This beginning literacy practice book gives students an enjoyable way to improve phonics and vocabulary skills from A to Z. Whimsical illustrations highlight simple sentences, beginning grammar, and 888 high-frequency words in exercises that appeal to emerging readers of all ages. The labeled drawings on each A to Z scene are similar to those in a picture dictionary that students can use as a daily reference for writing and spelling. Each unit begins with facing pages that show words beginning with the letter and explore their meanings. Then the unit explores the phonics of the letter – the sounds it makes. Next, each alphabetic unit presents vocabulary in topic areas (lexical sets) which begin with that particular letter – Animals, the Body, Colors, Days, Eating, Fruit, Groceries, Holidays, I&/BJobs, the Kitchen, and so on. Applications of these units can be useful for helping to meet Common Core Standards, including instruction that develops foundational skills in English, opportunities for classroom discourse and interaction, and ongoing assessment and feedback. There is also a Pronunciation Index for all the words in the picture activities.

Edinburgh University Press Writing Shame: Gender, Contemporary Literature and Negative Affect
Through readings of an array of recent texts literary and popular, fictional and autofictional, realist and experimental this book maps out a contemporary, Western, shame culture. It unpicks the complex triangulation of shame, gender and writing, and intervenes forcefully in feminist and queer debates of the last three decades. Starting from the premise that shame cannot be overcome or abandoned, and that femininity and shame are utterly and necessarily imbricated, Writing Shame examines writing that explores and inhabits this state of shame, considering the dissonant effects of such explorations on and beyond the page.

University of Georgia Press A President in Our Midst: Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Georgia
Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Georgia forty-one times between 1924 and1945. This rich gathering of photographs and remembrances documents the vital role of Georgia’s people and places in FDR’s rise from his position as a despairing politician daunted by disease to his role as a revered leader who guided the country through its worst depression and a world war.A native New Yorker, FDR called Georgia his “other state.” Seeking relief from the devastating effects of polio, he was first drawn there by the reputed healing powers of the waters at Warm Springs. FDR immediately took to Georgia, and the attraction was mutual. Nearly two hundred photos show him working and convalescing at the Little White House, addressing crowds, sparring with reporters, visiting fellow polio patients, and touring the countryside. Quotes by Georgians from a variety of backgrounds hint at the countless lives he touched during his time in the state. In Georgia, away from the limelight, FDR became skilled at projecting strength while masking polio’s symptoms. Georgia was also his social laboratory, where he floated new ideas to the press and populace and tested economic recovery projects that were later rolled out nationally. Most important, FDR learned to love and respect common Americans – beginning with the farmers, teachers, maids, railroad workers, and others he met in Georgia.

University of Georgia Press Jimmy Carter: Citizen of the South
Jimmy Carter: Citizen of the South uses oral histories and more than 215 photographs to look at the life of the former president and how the South nurtured him, provided a launching pad for his political career, and supported the various activities of his post-presidency. Even people very familiar with Carter will gain a greater appreciation for the breadth of civic, religious, and charitable ventures the president has engaged in since leaving office.Georgia and the South have shaped much of his life and beliefs. Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, grew up in Plains. Although military service led him to leave the area for eleven years, upon returning, he farmed and ran a peanut warehouse while he and Rosalynn raised their family. In 1962, he won election to the Georgia Senate and became governor eight years later. With the assistance of many Georgians, he became president of the United States in 1977.After losing his bid for reelection, Carter returned home to Plains, where southerners welcomed him and his wife back and supported their new endeavors. Carter established the Carter Presidential Library and the Carter Center in Atlanta and became a professor at Emory University. He has occasionally commented about world events and periodically meets with fellow presidents and governors. He taught Sunday school at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for four decades and has engaged in humanitarian programs such as Habitat for Humanity around the country and the world, continuing to educate and inspire generations of philanthropic activists. With this informative history, Kaye Lanning Minchew illuminates Carter's past, present, and his enduring legacy, adding to our understanding of his impact on both national and international concerns.

Bonnier Books Ltd STILL HOT!: 42 Brilliantly Honest Menopause Stories
Every menopause has its own story. It's time we told them . . .The menopause. What even is it? One big theme unites Still Hot!'s 42 stories - that, somehow, the world doesn't ready us for this. The menopause - let alone the perimenopause - simply isn't talked about; instead, it's reduced to a comic hot flush. More and more of us are proudly stepping free of the menopausal closet, but the Big M is still a conversation whispered below the radar. No one tells you it will be like this. No one prepares you for it.That silence is lifting, slowly. So let's be bold, let's overshare. Let's find solidarity among Still Hot!'s myriad voices - wise, rebellious, measured, fierce, upfront - telling how the menopause is not just one story, but many. Signal Books Ltd Lagos: A Cultural and Historical Companion
Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, expected in some projections to have a population of 25 million by 2025. This will make it the biggest metropolis in sub-Saharan Africa and possibly the world's third largest city. This phenomenal and continuing growth gives it a heady turbulence, especially as it only took on the form of a coherent urban entity in the eighteenth century. After Nigeria's independence Lagos remained both trading hub and, for thirty years, a federal capital and political vortex. Now its driving sense of 'can-do', its outreach and vitality, make it a fulcrum and a channel for commercial and cultural talent. Kaye Whiteman explores a city that has constantly re-invented itself, from the first settlement on an uninhabited island to the creation of the port in the early years of the twentieth century. Lagos is still defined by its curious network of islands and lagoons, where erosion and reclamation lead to a permanently shifting topography, but history has thrust it into the role of a burgeoning mega-city, overcoming all nature's obstacles. The city's melting-pot has fertilised a unique literary and artistic flowering that is only now beginning to be appreciated by a world that has only seen slums and chaos. COLONIAL CITY: Portuguese influences; the 1861 Treaty of Cession and the British colonialists; architectural traces: schools and government buildings; the move towards independence. CITY OF ENTREPRENEURS: trading through the centuries: Sierra Leoneans and Brazilians; traditional markets and modern malls; the Central Business District. THE CITY OF WORDS AND MUSIC: a counterpoint to the alleged philistinism of its businessmen; the views of writers Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe; artist and sculptor Ben Enwonwu; the musical genius Fela Kuti.
