In her photographic series Paris – 9 Rue de l’Université, Frizzi Krella (b. 1970) explores the seemingly mundane subject of a window front undergoing renovation work. With her precise eye, she transforms her observations into a multifaceted reflection of the moment, a composition of the ephemeral. Krella’s photographs are an invitation to investigate the world, with its various distortions and compositions, as if it were a puzzle. They are an opportunity to delight in the playful appropriation of the various layers of reality and coincidence in order to assimilate the things we have seen into the cosmos of our own experience of art and the world around us. The Tianjin Grand Theater occupies a key position on this site, entering into a dialog with its architectural surroundings. The circular form of the roof construction relates to that of the Natural History Museum there in such a way that it creates a connection between the earthbound museum and the seemingly floating theater building.In this volume, the responsible architects illuminate the Grand Theater by means of texts and images, and show how syntheses can be created between western and eastern traditions in a highly modern building. How do you actually build a people‘s theatre? As simple as necessary, so as not to cause any fear about entering in the audience, and as chic as possible, because theatre is not only about staging on stage. This is the answer of the architectural firm Lederer, Ragnarsdóttir, Oei (Stuttgart) and the construction company Reisch (Bad Saulgau). Their Munich Volkstheater presents itself as a powerfully poetic brick building that is in dialogue with the old buildings of the former Munich cattle yard and gives the neighbourhood an important cultural impulse.
