Beatrice was born in 1200 near Louvain and died in 1268 in the monastery of Nazareth. The author of this study demonstrates that Beatrice is an authentic exponent of Cistercian mystical tradition. Beatrice's theme is Minne, eternal divine love as it enters into intimacy or conversation with the soul and progressively elevates it until it regains the nobility and closeness to God in and for which it was created. Minne overwhelms the soul who can experience only one aspect or mode of love at the time - and so Minne is experienced amid what seems to be a riot of contradictions. The seven ways of Minne are different ways in which God's self-giving impacts on human desire. Beatrice's little treatise, providentially preserved, will serve us well in coming to an understanding of our spiritual experience. The spatial aspects of epidemics have been a largely ignored feature of plant ecology, yet an understanding of the spatial dynamics of pathogens is essential to quantifying the impact of diseases on wild plants. Moreover, it may provide valuable information for the control of human diseases. This seminal work fulfills such a role by describing the basics of botanical epidemiology within the context of plant ecology. A variety of models are covered to estimate key parameters at both the individual plant and population levels, with emphasis on the value of spatial-temporal models in the evolutionary dynamics of pathogens. Practical methods are presented to validate these models, thus making this book accessible to theorists and empiricists alike.

This book deals with the question how communities across Europe during the later 3rd millennium BC adopt and transform the Bell Beaker phenomenon differently. By looking at these processes of change from the perspective of settlements and settlement material culture, an interpretation is given to the development of this phenomenon that is alternative to the currently prevailing migration models.Instead, the author uses social theories on the spread of innovations, the development and functioning of communication networks and the social technologies involved in the production of material culture in his arguments.For the first time, settlements from various regions of Europe are studied at the same level and compared using modern research methods such as aoristic frequency distributions, the Bayesian modelling of radiocarbon dates and network analyses. Temporal and spatial variability in the regional processes that lead to the adoption (and rejection!) of Bell Beaker innovations are described in detail. The regional variability in communication between settlements, and the exchange of ideas and objects and mobility of people are combined with sociological network theories on the spread and adoption of novel ideas. Regional differences in the production of pottery are reviewed by both quantitative and qualitative methods.Finally, a Bell Beaker network is described in which various processes of innovation adoption and subsequent re-invention, developing communication networks and different forms of mobility take part.

Beatrijs van Nazareth (1200-1268) is de eerste schrijfster van een Diets mystiek traktaat. Beatrijs schildert in een aantal opeenvolgende miniaturen verschillende ervaringen die de mens doormaakt op de minneweg. Zij beoogt niet de lezer te informeren over de eindeloze gevarieerdheid of het uitzonderlijke karakter van deze ervaringen. Door kleine verschuivingen in haar beschrijving van de Minne schetst zij het totale mystieke proces. Subtiele variaties laten zien hoe de weg van de mens naar God omgekeerd de intocht van God in de mens blijkt te zijn. Minne brengt in de mens een begeren op gang dat hem door zijn groeiende ontvankelijkheid meer en meer binnenvoert in de passieve beaming van haar begeren. De geregistreerde herhalingen en paradoxen markeren de spiraalsgewijze voortgang waardoor het centrum van de persoon steeds meer buiten hemzelf komt te liggen. De weg die zijn oorsprong vindt in het begeren van de Minne, eindigt in het perspectief van de oneindige werkelijkheid van de Minne, waar tijd en ruimte plaats maken voor Gods eeuwigheid. De "Seven maniren van minnen" schilderen deze weg bij wijze van een geestelijke begeleiding, waardoor de Minne zelf tot leidsvrouwe wordt op de weg van Gods begeren.Na de presentatie van tekst, auteur en historische context voltrekt de studie van de tekst zich in drie fasen. In het eerste deel wordt een tekstanalytische of hermeneutische benadering gehanteerd. Per "manire" worden van iedere paragraaf beknopte woordstudies gepresenteerd, waarna een interpretatie van de paragraaf volgt. In het tweede gedeelte volgt een systematische analyse van de opbouw van het gehele traktaat en een mystagogische interpretatie waarin het kader van de tekst wordt blootgelegd als begeleiding op de mystieke weg. Het mystagogisch perspectief is bepalend geweest voor de gehele studie.

In moderne kerken zijn kruiswegstaties vaak verdwenen of tot onderdeel geworden van een abstracte wandschildering of decoratief relief. Toch heeft het kruis de laatste tijd zijn traditionele plaats in het hart van de christelijke spiritualiteit teruggevonden. Juist in een tijd van geweld en onrecht zonder weerga krijgt het kruis betekenis als symbool van willekeurig geweld, van onrechtvaardige veroordeling van mensen, onderdrukking van het protest van de zwakken door belangengroepen die anderen in hun macht houden. Moderne mensen worden onophoudelijk geconfronteerd met Jezus die gefolterd, zwartgemaakt en tot zwijgen gebracht wordt. Dagelijks lezen wij in de krant en zien we op de televisie talloze berichten over oorlogen en zinloos geweld. In dit boek mediteren de zalige Titus Brandsma en de kunstenaar Albert Servaes over het lijden van Christus. De beroemde "tweede bekering" van Teresa kwam voort uit de beschouwing van een beeld van de "Ecce Homo" - een van die realistische Spaanse afbeeldingen die ons het bloed en de wonden waarmee het heilig lichaam overdekt is, niet besparen. De meditaties van Titus Brandsma over het lijden vormen een onderdeel van deze traditie waarin een levendig gebruik van de verbeelding ertoe dient om de werkelijkheid van Jezus' lijden op te roepen. Zijn overwegingen worden echter niet bij toeval in herinnering gebracht, want zij zijn meditaties bij de staties van de kruisweg van de schilder, Albert Servaes. De details van zijn overwegingen worden bepaald door de zwart op wit houtskooltekeningen van de kunstenaar. Dit boek presenteert een meesterwerk van de Vlaamse kunst gekoppeld aan de geestelijke reflecties van een vooraanstaand religieus personage uit Nederland. Beide zijn het resultaat van de overweging van Jezus' weg van de liefde. Servaes tekent in zichtbare beelden wat Titus Brandsma heel zijn leven innerlijk overwogen en geleefd heeft. Brandsma ziet in de kruisweg van Servaes een vorm van kunst die kan helpen om tot de ware contemplatie van de lijdende Christus te komen. Een zalige die mediteert bij een kruisweg die door Rome verboden wordt omdat het lijden te menselijke trekken vertoont.In recent times the cross has once more assumed its traditional place at the heart of Christian spirituality. To an age of unprecedented violence and injustice the cross makes sense as the symbol of arbitrary violence, unjust condemnation, suppression of the protest of the weak by powerful vested interests. Jesus, tortured, calumniated and silenced, has a familiar look to the modern person. Teresa of Avila's famous "second conversion" resulted from contemplating a statue of the "Ecce homo" - one of those realistic Spanish ones not omitting the blood and wounds covering the sacred body. To beginners in prayer, practicing meditation, she recommends the use of the imagination to picture Jesus, especially in his passion. Albert Servaes (1883-1966) is the leading representative of Expressionism in Belgian painting. Here we have a great piece of Flemish art matched with the spiritual thoughts of Brandsma. Titus meditating on the passion of the Lord, and calling attention to the place of the cross in prayer. These meditations on the passion stand wholly in this tradition of the vivid use of the imagination in order to evoke the reality of Jesus' sufferings. The details of his thoughts are determined by the artist's black on sepia drawings and are completely understood only by reference to them. No doubt the grim expressionist statement of the theme brought home with extra force to Titus' mind the frightful nature of the crucifixion.

Some 280 letters from a leading figure in the eighteenth-century Catholic community shed new light on a turbulent period. Edited by FRANS KORSTEN, JOSS BLOM, FRANS BLOM AND GEOFFREY SCOTT James Peter Coghlan [1731-1800] was the chief English Catholic printer, publisher and bookseller of the second half of the eighteenth century. It was mainly through him that the English Catholics were provided with an extensive polemical, catechetical, pastoral and devotional literature of their own. Coghlan was also a pivotal figure in the infrastructure and logistics of the Catholic community, acting as a middleman between the various layers and segments of that community. In the turbulent days of the Catholic Committee after 1785, he found himself uneasily in the midst of the fray. He corresponded with dozens of British Catholics, at home and abroad, and his letters, pious, shrewd, dedicated, garrulous and eminently practical, yield a fascinating insight into the day-to-day working of Catholic book production as well as the behind-the-scenes life of the English Catholic community. For much of history, people have been treated as subjects to those with political and economic power and wealth. It is only in the last 250 years that people (in some parts of the world) have become citizens as opposed to subjects. This change happened in a very short period, between 1780 and 1820, when the foundation for democracy was laid. This was also the basis upon which a century later, local governments responded to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth.During the twentieth century, all democratic governments came to perform a range of tasks, functions, and services that had no historical precedent. In the thirty years following the Second World War, Western democracies created welfare states that, for the first time in history, significantly reduced the gap between the wealthy and the rest. Many of the reforms of that postwar period have been rolled back since then because of the belief that government should be more “businesslike”. The changes in the role of government in society have been massive in the past 250 years, and so little is known about why.Jos C.N.
