Enchanted Lion Books Before I Grew Up
A story of childhood dreams and adventures, and of the parental love that in seeing you, nourishes you to become yourself.★ A Marginalian (formerly Brain Pickings) Loveliest Children’s Book of 2021 ★Using notebooks, paintings, and sketches, author John Miller (Winston and George) weaves a lyrical story about the childhood of an Italian artist named Giuliano Cucco. Through luminescent, emotionally rich images, Miller tells the story of a colorful family and an imaginative boy, from a time when children had the freedom to roam and to dream. This innovative picture book, sprung from images into words, is an ode to childhood and a celebration of the human spirit. It's also a celebration of the deep inner solitude that we possess as children, wherein we flourish. Here, our child protagonist is ripening on his own, and needs only three words from his father to help him confirm who he believes himself to be.

Yale University Press James II
James II (1633–1701) lacked the charisma of his father, Charles I, but shared his tendency to dismiss the views of others when they differed from his own. Failing to understand his subjects, James was also misunderstood by them. In this highly-regarded biography, John Miller reassesses James II and his reign, drawing on a wide array of primary sources from France, Italy, and Ireland as well as England. Miller argues that the king had many laudable attributes--he was brave, loyal, honorable, and hard-working, and he was at least as benevolent toward his people as his father had been. Yet James’s conversion to Catholicism fueled the distrust of his Protestant subjects who placed the worst possible construction on his actions and statements. Although James came to see the securing of religious freedom for Catholics in the wider context of freedom for all religious minorities, his people naturally doubted the sincerity of his commitment to toleration. The book explores James’s relations with the state and society, focusing on the political, diplomatic, and religious issues that shaped his reign. Miller discusses the human failings, the gulf of understanding between the king and his subjects, and the sheer bad luck that led to James’s downfall. He also considers the reasons for James’s lack of interest in recovering his kingdom after his flight to France in 1688. This revised edition of the book includes a substantial new foreword assessing recent work on the reign.“This is a first-class essay in historical biography. . . . It must displace all previous lives of James II.”—J. P. Kenyon, Observer

The University of Chicago Press African Rhythm and African Sensibility: Aesthetics and Social Action in African Musical Idioms

Not many scholars will ever be able to achieve the kind of synthesis of 'doing' and 'writing about' their subject matter that Chernoff has achieved, but he has given us an excellent illustration of what is possible."—Chet Creider, Culture"Chernoff develops a brilliant and penetrating musicological essay that is, at the same time, an intensely personal and even touching account of musical and cultural discovery that anyone with an interest in Africa can and should read. . . . No other writing comes close to approaching Chernoff's ability to convey a feeling of how African music 'works'"—James Koetting, Africana Journal"Four stars. One of the few books I know of that talks of the political, social, and spiritual meanings of music. I was moved. It was so nice I read it twice."—David Byrne of "Talking Heads"The companion cassette tape has 44 examples of the music discussed in the book. Amberley Publishing Surrey in Photographs
Although within close proximity to London, the county of Surrey is blessed with green open spaces, including the North Downs, the Weald and the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All these make it a welcome escape from the frenetic pace and urban sprawl of the capital. The highest point in the county is Leith Hill, with its landmark eighteenth-century tower, one of the county’s many National Trust sites. First recorded as ‘Suthinge’ in AD 722, Surrey became a favourite royal hunting ground and today it is renowned as a centre of horse racing with courses at Epsom, Kempton and Sandown. Racing of another kind once took place at Brooklands, the scene of many record-breaking motoring feats, and during the Second World War aircraft were manufactured there. A museum now celebrates the site’s illustrious heritage. In Surrey in Photographs, professional photographer John Miller captures the spirit, essence and identity of Surrey in a series of superb images. He highlights the immense variety of places and landmarks to be found here ranging from rural to urban locations.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Modern Brass Ensemble in Twentieth-Century Britain
The first study of the performance practice, repertoire and context of the modern 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Whereas the British 'brass band' originated in the nineteenth century and rapidly developed into a nationwide working-class movement, the perceived modern 'brass ensemble' has a less clear foundation and identity. This book is the first to focus exclusively on the performance, practice, repertoire and context of the 'brass ensemble' in the musical world. Following World War II, the brass quintet and other orchestral groupings emerged in the United States and Europe, with musical customs established by professional players playing orchestral instruments. These groups initially played a combination of the music of Gabrieli and his contemporaries as well as newly commissioned works. By the late twentieth century, however, repertory spanned works by Elliott Carter, Maxwell Davies and Lutosławski, together with music that integrated jazz, commercial elements, and landmark transcriptions. At the book's heart is the story of the London-based, internationally acclaimed, Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. But this is not a story of one ensemble, as the 'brass ensemble' can be defined in several forms. The Modern Brass Ensemble in Twentieth-Century Britain offers a comprehensive account by an author and performer who was involved in many of the key developments of the modern 'brass ensemble'.

British Library Publishing Polar Horrors: Strange Tales from the World's Ends
Fired up by the accounts of exploring parties in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, writers of the weird and supernatural began to construct a literary Arctic and Antarctic in which terrors lay undiscovered in the ice and gateways to bizarre hidden worlds were waiting. From James Hogg's lurid North Pole narrative of life amongst polar bears in 'The Surpassing Adventures of Allan Gordon' to tales of mad science and ghostly visitations among the wind-blown expanse of the southern continent, this new collection showcases a wealth of neglected material and an overlooked niche of literature obsessed with the limits of human experience. Pulp tales of alien forces emerging from the ice and a battle between hunter and invisible man-eating duck creature drift alongside modern horror from indigenous Arctic voices to show the extent and endurance of the lure of these sublime landscapes.

The History Press Ltd Southwold: Britain in Old Photographs
It is said, and not without some justification, that a picture is worth a thousand words. As it happens Southwold, very nearly England's most easterly town, is endlessly written about. Its charm, grace and pure magic have captivated writers and journalists ever since Daniel Defoe visited in 1713. But this book tells the story of Southwold over the last 100 years in pictures. The photographers seized opportunities presented by the late Victorian and early Edwardian era - whcih also proved to be the golden age of the postcard - to capture Southwold on their glass plate negatives, and also on film. It is all here: the beach, the common, the sea, the town, the people, the wars and the special Southwold occasions. And of course there are some lovely pictures of the eccentric little railway that helped turn a town that lived mainly by fishing into a genteel holiday resort. This book will delight all those who love Southwold and understand its funny ways.

With a foreword by Kathleen Jamie. Trees can evoke powerful feelings. For Henry David Thoreau, the woods are places beyond civilisation; for Ursula Le Guin and J. R. R. They can be lovely, dark and deep. John Miller builds upon the ecological arguments for saving forests to raise the compelling question of their cultural value, with beautiful illustrations from the British Library’s unparalleled collections of books and manuscripts. This book roams freely across literature and culture from around the world, weaving in personal memoir, to explore why woods matter to us. Inventory Press LLC Matt Keegan: OR
This is the first significant publication to explore the output of Matt Keegan, the New York-based artist known for his work across mediums, as well as independent publishing including the acclaimed editioned art journal North Drive Press. This monograph expands on a recent solo exhibition by the artist at Rogaland Kunstsenter; Stavanger, Norway, titled “Portable Document Format.” The show was organized as an idiosyncratic retrospective, with Keegan remaking sculptures dating from 2006 to 2015, initially fabricated in Sheetrock and steel, in cardboard. Like the exhibition, the publication serves both as a project and a reference for the artist’s work. Essays by Tom McDonough and John Miller theorize Keegan’s production, while interviews with Sara VanDerBeek and Anna Craycroft underscore the artist’s ongoing engagement with his peer group. Furthered by contributions from colleagues Uri Aran, Leslie Hewitt and James Richards, situated alongside full-color installation photos and reproductions of work from the past decade, Matt Keegan: OR provides a solid introduction and layered overview of the artist’s multifarious practice.
