Cognella, Inc Context Is Everything: How to Navigate Life in Multiple Realities
Television, movies, news, and social media; we're living in a world where we're inundated with stories and information. Yet somehow, instead of learning about each other and coming together, our nation is more divided than ever. Despite our access to facts and information, research indicates that our distrust of others is at a record high. In everyday interactions, we deal with people who seem to be operating in an entirely different reality than us—because they are.In Context is Everything: How to Navigate Life in Multiple Realities, author David James Bright explains how each of us is raised in our own unique context and how that context shapes our identity, narratives, beliefs, and willingness to interpret facts. Bright pulls from his extensive work as a mental health, career, and school counselor to help readers better understand how we create our own social narratives and identities.Through personal anecdotes, real-world examples, case studies, doses of humor, and research, you'll learn how our personal biases and tendencies can affect how we interact with others, especially those with different life experiences or those of different social classes, ethnic backgrounds, sexual identities, or political affiliations.By facilitating greater levels of personal understanding and self-reflection, Context is Everything encourages readers of all backgrounds to recognize our common thread of humanity and to come together despite our varying worldviews and perspectives. The book is an ideal supplementary text for courses in sociology, psychology, and counseling, especially those with focus on human services professional identity, social justice, social constructivism, and capstone experiences.

University of British Columbia Press The Limits of Labour: Class Formation and the Labour Movement in Calgary, 1883-1929
In a few short decades before the First World War, Calgary was transformed from a frontier outpost into a complex industrial metropolis. With industrialization there emerged a diverse and equally complex working class. David Bright explores the various levels of class formation and class identity in the city to argue that Calgary’s reputation as a prewar centre of labour conservatism is in need of revision.Bright also delineates the trials of the Calgary labour movement in the 1920s. Internal divisions and dissent prevented the movement from realizing the potential strength of the working class. Instead, even as local capitalism restructured itself, political and industrial labour organizations wilfully fragmented their own base of support. In particular, they failed to address the concerns and needs of the growing number of unemployed in the city, a neglect that foreshadowed events of the 1930s.This failure left the labour movement unable to meet the challenge of the Great Depression. In part, at least, the demise of labour as a viable political alternative in Calgary paved the way for the rise of Social Credit.Using Calgary as a model, The Limits of Labour reasserts the need to place class formation at the heart of the development of western Canada and provides an historical context to the renewed struggle of labour for social justice in the 1990s.

Cognella, Inc The Tao of Anxiety: Bridging Eastern and Western Thought
The Tao of Anxiety: Bridging Eastern and Western Thought provides readers a clear and deeper understanding of how philosophical schools of thought guide anxiety management techniques in clinical and everyday life situations.Drawing on his vast experiences as a counseling professor and mental health professional, author David Bright helps readers understand how anxiety manifests in each of us and how the combination of both eastern and western philosophies with modern management techniques can result in greater personal insight, self-awareness, and emotional management. While many books speak to the use of eastern philosophical principles as they apply to mental health, few speak directly to the connection between existential philosophy, Buddhism, and modern mental health practices. By focusing on these commonalities, the book seeks to illuminate the common elements of these approaches for any individual seeking greater reflection and anxiety-management.The book features excerpts from the Tao Te Ching and quotes from existential philosophers in addition to summaries of modern therapeutic approaches created by major historical figures in psychotherapy. Simple examples and metaphors combined with cases inspired by real-world clinical work with clients facing a myriad of complex anxiety issues bring the material to life. The Tao of Anxiety is a brief, accessible, and conversational guide for clinicians-in-training, as well as any individual seeking to better understand and manage anxiety.
