Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Little Woodford
A new village drama full of life, love... and secrets. Perfect for fans of Jill Mansell and Emma Burstall. Little Woodford has a sleepy high street, a weekly market, a weathered old stone church and lovingly tended allotments. A peaceful, unexciting place, the very heart of middle England. In Little Woodford no one has fingers in more pies than Olivia Laithwaite, parish councillor, chair of the local WI, wife, mother and all round queen bee. So of course it's Olivia who is first to spot that The Beeches has been sold at last. Soon rumours begin to swirl around the young widow who has bought this lovely house. Why exactly did she leave London with her beautiful stepdaughter and young sons? Are they running from someone? Hiding something? Though if they are, they won't be the only ones. Sometimes the arrival of newcomers in a community is all it takes to light a fuse...

Bucknell University Press Literary Memory: Scott's Waverley Novels and the Psychology of Narrative
Catherine Jone's Literary Memory explores the relationship of memory to writing in the "long" eighteenth century in Scotland and America. It does so by arguing for Walter Scott's adaptation and development in the Waverley Novels of varieties of "literary memory" from the philosophy and psychological theory of the Scottish Enlightenment. In the eighteenth century, philosophy (defined broadly as thinking about knowledge, existence, and being) became inseparable from psychology (the science of the mind). Locating Scott within this rich intellectual context, Jones explores his understanding of, and narrative transformation of, various forms of literary memory, while judiciously distinguishing Scott's complex and influential achievement from later Freudian theories and representations. Casting the cultural and historical perspective wider still, this book also offers a lucid and original account of the ideological rejection of the cultural synthesis represented by Scott's "literary memory" by the New England romance writers, Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Theoretically and historically grounded, Literary Memory will appeal to all those interested in the writings of Scott, the Scottish Enlightenment, Romantic cultural history, the history of the novel, narrative theory, and literature in relation to psychology and psychoanalysis.

Edinburgh University Press Literature and Music in the Atlantic World, 1767-1867
This new study looks at the relationship of rhetoric and music in the era's intellectual discourses, texts and performance cultures principally in Europe and North America. Catherine Jones begins by examining the attitudes to music and its performance by leading figures of the American Enlightenment and Revolution, notably Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. She also looks at the attempts of Francis Hopkinson and others to harness the Orphean power of music so that it should become a progressive force in the creation of a new society. She argues that the association of rhetoric and music that reaches back to classical Antiquity acquired new relevance and underwent new theorisation and practical application in the American Enlightenment in light of revolutionary Atlantic conditions. Jones goes on to consider changes in the relationship of rhetoric and music in the nationalising milieu of the nineteenth century; the connections of literature, music and music theory to changing models of subjectivity; and Romantic appropriations of Enlightenment visions of the public ethical function of music.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Crime and Social Exclusion
Via a mutual concern with social exclusion, the agendas of criminology and social policy have begun to overlap far more in recent years. The two fields have always shared a common concern with class, and more recently with race and gender, but remained rigorously differentiated until crime prevention moved higher on political and academic agendas in the 1980s. This collection of papers explores aspects of social exclusion and the measures taken to reduce its impact from the perspective of both disciplines. The contributors write mainly, though not exclusively, from a British perspective, However the issues raised are of broader relevance to North America, Europe and elsewhere. Criminology in Britain has recently been examining the way in which political initiatives designed to contain and exclude dispossessed populations (seen to constitute major crime risks) have permeated all areas of criminal justice policy. In America this has led to an increased emphasis on the rhetoric of retribution, and the 'management' of criminal classes, shifting away from earlier emphasis on 'rehabilitating' individual offenders. Critics of this development increasingly recognise that more practical answers to crime involve not more penal repression but social policies designed to integrate and include the dispossessed, especially the young. It is in this connection that the experience of Singapore offers a different sort of warning.

Bucknell University Press Scotland, Ireland, and the Romantic Aesthetic
In this ground-breaking comparative study of Scottish and Irish Romanticism, leading scholars examine literary relations between Scotland, Ireland, and England in the period 1760-1830, an age of political upheaval and constitutional change that witnessed the Irish Rebellion, the Act of Union, major internal migration, and the cultural repositioning of Ireland and Scotland within a newly conceived 'United Kingdom.' Adopting an 'archipelagic' approach, contributors reveal how national and regional factors played a pivotal role in shaping the literary forms and cultural reception of Romantic aesthetics, with the Scottish-Irish binary serving as a ubiquitous point of reference. The essays extend existing work on the national tale and historical novel to identify previously unexplored areas of comparative inquiry such as national song, topical satire and verse romance, national painting, and travel literature. The book offers an exciting new map of the cultural geography of the Romantic era, and establishes a dynamic methodology for future comparative work.
