"What is this 'principle' (principium) in which God is said to have created heaven and earth?" This is the first question Eckhart poses at the very beginning of his Commentary on Genesis. In the course of this book a space is opened up in order to speak about the relationship between God and creation in a 'principial' way. Tracing the concept as it is used throughout his Latin (and, on occasion, German) works, the panoply and resonance of its use establish the necessary place of principium within the vocabulary of Eckhart's metaphysics of creation and generation. Ranging from the nature of being to the question of what constitutes human personhood, the 'principle' serves to identify Eckhart's teaching on the mutual compenetration between God and man. This book has been awarded the FIIT Manfred Lautenschlaeger Prize for Theological Promise by the University of Heidelberg.

What is time, what is space and how do they relate to each other? Even to pose these questions is to presume their existence, says Meister Eckhart in his Commentary on Exodus, from where he then develops his own view on the subject. Although far from having become mainstream, his definition of time as presentiality and space as non-categorical creativity had an enormous influence throughout history, particularly in the arts. In this thematic volume the contributors explore the concepts of time and space in Eckhart's thought, situating these historically, philosophically, theologically, and culturally, whilst focusing on their interpretation in art works, particularly by the American-Korean performance and video artist Taery Kim (b. 1988) who refers explicitely to Eckhart. Kim advances the questions 'what is time?' and 'what is space?' as embodied questions in her performances and video installations, thus exploring Eckhart and inquiring into the ways we can think about our relationships, as embodied subjects, to the vagrancies and bindings of time and space now. Drawing together artists, art historians, theologians, and philosophers, as well as building on existing scholarship, this volume provides the first lengthy discussion of spatio-temporality in Eckhart's writings, highlighting Eckhart's relationship to performance art, and the works of Kim.

Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt lived streets away from one another. Thomas was the last great figure of the Modistae, the speculative grammarians who were concerned with the relationship between grammar and ontology, the structure of the sentence mirroring the structure of the world. Thomas’ major work – the Grammatica speculativa – was deeply influential in the medieval period. But does Thomas’ geographical proximity to Eckhart suggest a concomitant influence of modism on his thought? What of modism’s legacy after the rapid demise of the grammatical theory in the early-mid fourteenth century? The contributions to this volume deal with these matters, and were originally presented at the ‘Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt’ conference at the Max-Weber-Center at the University of Erfurt, 14-15 November 2013.
