Strategies for success have been detailed in the first and second editions of Managing Breeds for a Secure Future. The third edition explores this further, providing more strategies that can assure long-term survival for breeds of livestock, poultry, and dogs. Managing Breeds for a Secure Future Third Edition is re-organized to flow better, and has additional chapters on specific protocols for maintaining breeds. Laser therapy has become increasingly popular in small animal practice and has many benefits to the patient – including reduced inflammation, faster tissue healing and less pain, and can be used in a wide variety of conditions including wounds, sprains and fractures. Aimed at the first opinion vet, this very practical book covers the most important aspects of laser use in the practice environment. It includes: how lasers work on tissue, how to use them in different scenarios, how to maximise results, how to use them on different conditions including soft tissue, musculoskeletal and neurological, how to integrate lasers with other therapies, when not to use lasers or use with caution, how to choose the equipment and implement it in the practice environment and promote the treatment to clients. Veterinary Laser Therapy in Small Animal Practice combines the clinical and scientific approaches reflected in the work of the two authors, showing how both sides together can help you have a positive impact on the patient.

5M Books Ltd Picking a Pedigree: How to Choose A Healthy Puppy or Kitten
Getting a new puppy or kitten is such an exciting time for any family and should be the start of a beautiful, long friendship. Picking a breed can be difficult and is sometimes a choice made on an impulse because a certain look or character seems to be just what you want. Sadly, a snap decision can turn into heartache if the breed you pick doesn’t suit your lifestyle or has health issues that you didn’t know about. Some breeds of dogs and cats have body shapes that are not healthy and can cause a lifetime of discomfort. Selective breeding has produced features like short faces, tiny legs, long backs, huge ears and lots of skin wrinkles. Some breeds also have high levels of inherited disease like heart problems. These unnatural exaggerations and inherited issues can not only mean big bills and frequent visits to the vet but also a less than ideal life for your pet. This book will help you avoid the breeds most affected by health problems. We look at what Mother Nature and evolution picked for cats and dogs compared to what man has done through breeding. Hopefully you will start to see these odd body shapes not as normal for a breed, but as unhealthy changes to our beautiful cats and dogs. We’ll also look at how you can try to find the best breeder possible and avoid the likes of puppy farmers who care more about money than their animals. Somewhere out there, a puppy or kitten is waiting to become a cherished part of your family and I hope this book will help you find the right one. Dogs and cats are wonderful animals and enrich our lives so let’s try and make sure that they are as healthy and happy as possible.

5M Books Ltd Rural Tranquillity to National Crisis: A Farm Vet's Story
Born in rural Worcestershire in 1950, David Harwood learnt about keeping animals from an early age, before going on to study veterinary medicine at London's Royal Veterinary College. Once qualified, David became established as a farm animal vet, working in the Midlands and South West England. David tells his own story of working his way through vet school in the early 1970s, before working in farm practices. There are plenty of anecdotes about rural characters- both human and non-human - and a vivid account of the demands, challenges and thrills of an extraordinary veterinary life full of incidents and life-or-death moments. Along with the usual livestock caseload, David also came into contact with more unusual patients such as ostriches, giraffes and snails. While telling his story, David provides plenty of information on livestock diseases and conditions which will interest fellow vets and livestock keepers, and also gives plenty of tips and tricks for aspiring vets to pick up along the way. David also provides a fascinating account of his work as a government Veterinary Investigator. CSI-style detective work was often needed to uncover the causes of illness and death in farm animals, and David often had to trace events back through the farm environment or the animal's behaviour.

5M Books Ltd Complexity and Medicine: The Elephant in the Waiting Room
Despite many successes Medicine has failed to solve a long list of common conditions. In Complexity and Medicine Professor Alexander proposes that this failure results from a reluctance to incorporate Complexity Theory and employ it as a tool for investigating disease. Complexity science, used in disciplines as diverse as economics and meteorology, involves the study of dynamic networking systems in which the outcomes are dependent on interactions between individual elements and can not be predicted from an examination of the components. Tissues and organs have been shown to be just such systems, yet the concept has made negligible penetration into medical thinking. The author demonstrates how this science can be used to solve common problems in clinical medicine. The first section explains why Medicine’s scienti¬c method, well suited to linear problems and testing, is inadequate in the face of non linear systems. It examines Chaos Theory and Self Regulating Dynamic Systems, and proposes a Complexity based search model for developing hypotheses in complex disease. In the second section, the author makes use of his extensive research to test the model against a range of unsolved disorders, formulating hypotheses for osteoporosis, idiopathic osteoarthritis, Pagets disease and diseases of the spine. The model is shown to be applicable to disorders of other systems, such as asthma and varicose veins, and to be demonstrably more effective than a conventional approach in fin¬nding cause. Complexity Theory is the elephant in Medicine’s waiting room – a reality ignored for too long. Unless it is embraced by Medicine many complex diseases will remain unsolved.

5M Books Ltd Burbot: Conserving the Enigmatic Freshwater Codfish
The burbot has a unique ecology as the only member of the order of cod-like fishes found in freshwater. It is the second most widely distributed freshwater fish in the Northern Hemisphere, variously threatened, extinct or thriving across different parts of this wide paleoarctic range. Burbot were driven to extinction from Britain most probably in the 1970s, the last recorded specimen caught in 1969 in Cambridgeshire. Particularly over the past decade, a large body of work has addressed potential reintroduction of the burbot to Britain. The burbot’s diverse habitat and other needs throughout its life stages also mean that the species is a flagship for a diversity of other wildlife of restored river systems, and of the human benefits that these ecosystems can provide. Burbot is an excellent source for all those involved in freshwater fish and fisheries management, conservation and exploitation, including fish biologists (ichthyologists), environmental scientists, freshwater biologists, fisheries managers and scientists, conservation biologists, engineers and hydrologists. The libraries of all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have a copy. Anglers and all those interested in fishes and natural history will also benefit from this book.

5M Books Ltd The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual 3rd Edition
Isolated regions of the world are often at the forefront of emerging diseases and, to be effective in disease prevention and control, they require basic resources for field sample collection and testing in conditions vastly different from those available in well-equipped reference laboratories. Technical support for field extension staff, and the availability of reliable diagnostic testing facilities, are also vital to ensure sustainable livelihoods for subsistence farmers. This technical handbook aims to provide an easy to follow overview of the basic laboratory techniques, and sample collection guidelines, that we consider useful for staff working in district veterinary facilities in regions that lack the infrastructural support available for staff with ready access to national veterinary laboratories. The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual 3rd Edition provides the reader with a summary of basic diagnostic procedures and sample submission guidelines and also advocates for improved communication between animal health extension staff, veterinarians, laboratory staff and farmers. Case studies are used to illustrate key concepts. Basic laboratory disciplines are covered including parasitology, microbiology, haematology, serology / immunology and pathology. There are also sections on laboratory infrastructure and equipment. There is additional content on common clinical presentations, One Health approaches to Antimicrobial resistance, the role of the OIE, disease surveillance and wildlife disease monitoring. Supplementary tools for use in the field and laboratory are also available online. This new edition of The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual is updated to include content on pen side tests, selection and integration of new technologies, engagement with international agencies and programs, and the One Health approach to disease monitoring. Animal Health extension staff in isolated regions of the world, and NGOs, can benefit from this book as well as policy makers supporting veterinary work in rural areas and veterinary para-professionals involved in One Health work.

5M Books Ltd Animals, Ethics and Us: A Veterinary’s View of Human-Animal Interactions
Everyone has a view about animal ethics. Each of us, for example, has an opinion about whether we should eat meat; whether animals should be used for scientific research, or whether the use of animals in sport is acceptable. But very few of us stop to wonder about the basis of our views, or to rationalise them. In this book, Madeleine Campbell aims to enable us to do so, by addressing a series of questions such as: When does animal use become abuse? Why do we treat some animals differently from others? Are there some things which we should never do to animals? And, just because we can, should we? Drawing on her experience as a Veterinarian; a European Diplomate in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law; a researcher and teacher, and a member of various industry ethical review bodies and of welfare and ethics committees for membership organisations and government, the author takes ethical argument beyond academia and applies it to the question which currently dominates societal debate about human-animal interactions: what (if anything) is a reasonable use of an animal? Animals, Ethics, and Us offers a stripped back, balanced and moderate perspective, based on logical argument, philosophical principles and sound science. It is a thought-provoking read aimed at a broad readership including informed owners and animal enthusiasts, as well as useful a primer for students of animal ethics, welfare and veterinary medicine.
