Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win the war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians have only recently begun to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague, Chris Everitt, were the first to compile a complete review of all the raids and the background stories to this fascinating campaign. Clive Evans had a lengthy front-line flying career in which he flew Hunters, Canberras and Lightnings. Apart from his personnel experiences he describes all these types in considerable detail, explaining technical details and the nuances of each type. The final fast jet he flew was during a three year posting to the USA to evaluate the General Dynamics F-111that the British Government were considering purchasing. It was at the end of that overseas tour that he was severely wounded in a car crash whilst driving to the airport to return to the UK. rnrnDespite teetering on death's doorstep for several months he finally recovered but his injuries put an end to flying fast jets. Never the less, his return to duty involved becoming Project Officer for the design of the new Tornado, followed by a year at Staff College where he became Personal Staff Officer to the Air Marshall tasked with procuring new air systems for the services. He returned to flying by converting to the Hercules and became CO of 24 Squadron and took part in the Cyprus emergency of 1974.rnrnClive then became Station Commander at RAF Lyneham which suddenly became the main transport base for supplying our forces during the Falklands War. He drove the Station to unprecedented levels of effort and devised the programme to train the crews to become capable of air-to-air refuelling that was vital during the long distances flown over the Atlantic Ocean. The Falkland Islands would again feature when having been promoted to Air Commodore he was sent there as Deputy Commander of all British Forces.

We all think the NHS was first dreamed up by Nye Bevan when he became minister of health in 1945. Yet experiments with the NHS and welfare state in fact started many years before. Inspired by a doctor who coined the phrase “national health service” in 1910, John Tomley and David Davies took steps to pilot the first ever national health service, focusing on TB in Wales, the WNMA. Through the findings of the WNMA’s work, as well as John’s work as a local health commissioner and UK leader of the largest health service providers, the friendly societies, John campaigned for effective treatment for TB, including prevention and a national health service. John successfully led the campaign for the government’s Welsh TB Inquiry, which led directly to the Beveridge Report and the founding of the NHS and wider welfare state in 1948. His family then forgot about his work, due to the ravages of a genetic disease, so John’s story has never been told. Meanwhile the NHS, which John helped to found, also led to a cure for this disease for his great-great-granddaughter. The moral of this surprising tale? If John can do it, any of us can. We have what John described as the “golden keys’ in our hands.
