John Wiley and Sons Ltd Impact Validity as a Framework for Advocacy-Based Research
This issue introduces a new framework for thinking about research from the standpoint of usable knowledge. Impact Validity is the extent to which research has the potential to play a role in social and political change or is useful as a tool for advocacy or activism. A series of articles have been collected for this issue that exemplify the intersection of science, activism / advocacy, and social change. These articles highlight the ways in which others have strategically grounded their research in the advocacy needs of the social/political issue they are trying to influence, and the various decisions throughout the research process that have had a bearing on its potential to be useful in addressing social problems. These decisions, which rarely receive systematic attention, take central stage.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Tabulation of FARAD Comparative and Veterinary Pharmacokinetic Data
The use of therapeutic and antimicrobial agents to prevent, to control, and to eradicate disease in herd animals has without question revolutionized food animal production capacity. But how much of a good thing is too much? 20th century advances in disease diagnosis and treatment have led to 21st century concerns about the health risks posed to consumers when the animals they consume have been exposed to antimicrobials, therapeutic drugs, pesticides and other environmental contaminants. The Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank provides the pharmacologic data that veterinarians and producers need to screen animals that have been exposed to chemicals and to ensure that dangerously contaminated tissues of food-producing animals do not enter the human food chain. Established only twenty years ago under the auspices of the USDA, FARAD is an international venture that brings together and collates information on applications of pharmacokinetic principles to drug and chemical residue avoidance—information that previously has been spread throughout the literature. Now, the Tabulation of FARAD Comparative and Veterinary Pharmacokinetic Data brings together in a single source all the most current information on chemical residues in food animals, and provides easy access and numerous tables that offer essential pharmacokinetic data for chemicals in serum, plasma, blood, or in other matrices. This updated one-of-a-kind volume also features additional data on laboratory rodents, dogs, cats, and horses to facilitate broader interspecies extrapolations. This easy-to-use and newly-updated publication is the essential reference on the subject and belongs in the library of veterinarians, toxicologists, pharmacologists, animal scientists, food hygienists, and regulatory personnel involved in human food safety.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Zettel
Zettel is a collection of fragments which Wittgenstein cut from various of his typescripts and preserved for future use. More than half of the fragments were written in the years 1946-1948, after the completion of Part I and before the composition of Part II of the Philosophical Investigations. This collection may therefore be regarded as a companion volume to the Investigations, adding to both the scope and the Unity of Wittgenstein's chef d'oeuvre. The fragments were kept in a box and were not strictly ordered. Many have marks showing changes and improvements made after they were cut from the typescripts; some have remarks added in handwriting. Editing the collection for publication was thus a task of considerable difficulty. Since Zettel was first published, further research has been carried out on the fragments and minute comparisons have been made with their typescript and manuscript sources, revealing certain inaccuracies and misinterpretations in the first editing of the work. The second edition corrects these shortcomings and includes new explanatory footnotes; a detailed index, compiled by Stephen Amdur, has also been added.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Unsaturated Soils: A fundamental interpretation of soil behaviour
An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils is crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as to those concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, or soils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with a significant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linking fundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherently variable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, and unsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Even amongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness of the intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective of unsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates how this dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, the phases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure, an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques in triaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction to stress state variables, critical state and theoretical models in unsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles as applied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditions follows. These principles are then used to explore and develop a fundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soil structure is broken down into its component parts to develop equations describing the dual stress regime. The critical state strength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils are examined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as a three-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. The analysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soils and the development of conjugate stress, volumetric and strain-increment variables. These are used to examine the micromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxial shear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable by other means. Unsaturated Soils: A fundamental interpretation of soil behaviour covers a rapidly advancing area of study, research and engineering practice and offers a deeper appreciation of the key characteristics of unsaturated soil. It provides students and researchers with a framework for understanding soil behaviour and demonstrates how to interpret experimental strength and compression data. provides engineers with a deeper appreciation of key characteristics of unsaturated soils covers a rapidly advancing area of study, research and engineering practice provides students and researchers a framework for understanding soil behaviour shows how to interpret experimental data on strength and compression the limited number of books on the subject are all out of date

Pathology of Sudden Cardiac Death provides a comprehensive review of cardiovascular disorders. While sudden cardiac death could primarily be seen as an arrhythmogenic event, this actually represents the minority of cases. Although an increasing array of non-invasive diagnostic tools continue to develop, many physicians and operators of these new diagnostic modalities have never actually seen specimens which demonstrate the fundamental pathologic abnormalities. By providing an atlas style review of ischemic and non-ischemic etiologies of sudden cardiac death, this book opens a window to see the underlying pathology first hand.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The GnRH Neuron and its Control
The GnRH Neuron and its Control examines the developmental biology of GnRH neurons including their birth in the nasal placode of the early embryo, perinatal programming, and sexual differentiation, in addition to the hypothalamic mechanisms that control GnRH neurons in adulthood to generate pulsatile and surge modes of GnRH secretion throughout the major life stages including aging. The morphology, electrophysiology, signal transduction pathways, transcriptional regulators, and genomics underlying function of the adult GnRH neuron is discussed in detail, as is the neuroendocrinology and cell biology governing the generation of both modes of GnRH release. The book also reviews the neurobiological mechanisms and circuitry responsible for the modulation of the activity of GnRH neurons by season, stress, nutrition, and metabolism, and covers the current and potential therapeutic approaches to regulating GnRH secretion and action. Filled with newly identified research and classical fundamental knowledge to GnRH biology, it will provide students, researchers, and practitioners with an in-depth understanding of reproductive neuroendocrinology. This is the fifth volume in the Masterclass in Neuroendocrinology Series, a co- publication between Wiley and the INF (International Neuroendocrine Federation) that aims to illustrate highest standards and encourage the use of the latest technologies in basic and clinical research and hopes to provide inspiration for further exploration into the exciting field of neuroendocrinology.
