Clinical Press Ltd This Medical Life
"Unparalleled in British medical history James Owen Drife charted his reactions to the medical world in which he worked and published them, initially in World Medicine and then the British Medical Journal (BMJ). This book is sometimes painfully frank, at other times disturbing or very funny but always entertaining. It provides an important insight on the life and times of a doctor working in the NHS."

Royal Society of Chemistry Chemistry in the Garden
The aim of this book is to describe some aspects of the chemistry and chemical ecology which are found in the garden. In the garden there are numerous interactions between plants, the soil and with other organisms in which chemistry plays a central mediating role. The discussion concerns several of the chemically and ecologically interesting compounds that are produced by common ornamental garden plants and vegetables and by the predators that attack them. Many chemists are amateur gardeners and this book is directed at them as well as those with a general interest in the scientific processes involved in the garden.

Bench Press Return to the Scene of the Climb: A story of the 1st American ascent of Everest
James T. Lester (1927-2010) wasn't a mountaineer - he wasn't any sort of athlete, or even a hobbyist sportsman. But in 1963 he participated in the first successful American Mount Everest Expedition (AMEE), when Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Everest via the South Col route alongside Nawang Gombu Sherpa. Three weeks later, AMEE's Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld became the first climbers ever to summit the world's highest peak via the dangerous and forbidding West Ridge - a route on which only a handful of climbers have since succeeded. Immediately after the expedition, Lester became the route-planner, chauffeur, interpreter, bill-payer, and comrade to five of the Sherpa climbers from the expedition on an eight-week road trip across the United States' a thank-you from the U.S. State Department for their invaluable help in the success of the effort. And 35 years later, in 1998, armed with a group photo of the AMEE Sherpa climbers, 70-year-old Lester returned to Nepal with one goal: to find as many of them as he could and discover what their lives had become in the intervening years. In the final section of the book, Lester shares the life-enhancing stories - and the aspirations of the next generation - of the incredible men, women and children who enable foreign mountaineers to ascend Everest, often accompanying them on the treacherous climb while carrying significantly heavier loads. The lives of the Sherpa community are so often hidden on the edges of the greatest adventure stories, but in this part of Return to the Scene of the Climb Lester makes them the central to the narrative. Written with humility, humour and honesty, this book evokes the majestic Everest landscape and shines a new light on incredible stories of hard graft and heroism that would have been lost forever.

Troubador Publishing The Last Night of The Proms
If you want to understand Whetstone, ask Sir Roger Hollis what Palimpsest is. Primum non nocere. First do no harm. At the subsequent inquiry, it is the N-MASS, Dr Alastair Cameron-Strange, who is scapegoated, and hung out to dry. Why? Who authorised the storming of Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 301?First minded to quit medicine and get out, sheer bloody-mindedness drives Cameron-Strange to open a file on a high ranking government minister, the Enterprise Czar, erstwhile Managing Director of The Conglomerate, Sir Roger Hollis. His researches take him from London to Edinburgh, thence to the north-west tip of Scotland, where, accompanied by the mysteriously intangible Kathryn Hathaway, he discovers The Conglomerates's dr

Royal Society of Chemistry Human Stem Cell Toxicology
Toxicity against tissue stem cells (TSCs) is a major problem in drug development and environmental health science. Despite their essential function in all human cellular tissues, the nature of tissue stem cells is not fully understood. The small fraction of stem cells in tissues and the lack of specific biomarkers for their quantification present a formidable challenge to developing tools for their study and assays that can identify stem cell-toxic agents. Human Stem Cell Toxicology reveals TSC toxicity as a biomedical reality that is now well under siege by newly emerging ideas and technologies, despite these challenges. Chapters consider stem cell toxicity by environmental agents, pharmaceutical drug candidates, and marketed therapeutic medicines with adverse side effects. New insights to cellular, molecular, biochemical, and chemical mechanisms of human tissue stem cell toxicity are brought together. Experimental and theoretical treatments are of specific topics, including approaches to monitoring TSC function, newly discovered TSC types and TSC toxicity resistance mechanisms, are covered by expert authors. This book informs and champions the continued development of innovative technologies to predict the TSC toxicity of compounds before their use, whether in patients or the environment, by addressing emerging new cell-based approaches and concepts for technical innovation. This publication will be a useful reference for postgraduate students and researchers working in toxicology, pharmaceutical science, tissue cell biology and stem cell biology.

Island Press From Walden to Wall Street: Frontiers of Conservation Finance
In the absence of innovation in the field of conservation finance, a daunting funding gap faces conservationists aiming to protect America's system of landscapes that provide sustainable resources, water, wildlife habitat, and recreational amenities. Experts estimate that the average annual funding gap will be between $1.9 billion and $7.7 billion over the next forty years. Can the conservation community come up with new methods for financing that will fill this enormous gap? Which human and financial resources will allow us to fund critical land conservation needs? "From Walden to Wall Street" brings together the experience of more than a dozen pioneering conservation finance practitioners to address these crucial issues. Contributors present groundbreaking ideas such as government ballot measures for land conservation, convertible tax-exempt financing, and private equity markets. The creativity and insight of "From Walden to Wall Street" offers considerable hope that, even in this era of widespread financial constraints, the American conservation community's financial resources may potentially grow dramatically in both quantity and quality in the decades to come.
