In his Debt: The First 5000 Years, the anthropologist David Graeber put forward a new grand narrative of world history. Graeber suggests that this transformation made possible new economic institutions, such as IOUs, coinage, and chattel slavery. It also led to the emergence of modes of thought that have shaped Eurasian philosophical and religious traditions ever since. Debt in the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East explores the implications of this theory for the history of the Mediterranean and Near East. A distinguished group of ancient historians assesses how well Graeber's interpretations fit current understandings of ancient and late antique economies. At the same time, this volume offers a history of premodern credit systems which takes seriously the dual nature of debt as both quantifiable economic reality and immeasurable social obligation. Die Padiatrie hat sich erst im letzten Jahrhundert zu einer selbstandigen Fach- disziplin entwickelt. Die Notwendigkeit der Abtrennung von der internen Medizin und ihre spezifische Entwicklung ergaben sich aus den Besonderheiten der Physio- logie und Pathologie des Kindesalters. Eine wichtige Aufgabe war es nicht nur, vom Erwachsenenalter abweichende klinische Beobachtungen zu sammeln und fiir eine padiatrische Nosologie zu verwenden, sondern auch die physiologischen Grundlagen besonders des Sauglingsalters zu erforschen; denn die Human- physiologie hat sich dieser Fragen bis in die Gegenwart wenig angenommen. Wahrend die Klinik der Sauglings- und Kinderkrankheiten von Beginn systematisch gefordert wurde, haben die Kenntnisse iiber die Physiologie des Entwicklungsalters wohl nicht in gleichem MaBe zugenommen. Wer sich mit dem Wesen der Padiatrie vertraut machen will, muB jedoch auch den alters- abhangigen Funktionswandel studieren. Gleichwohl findet sich dariiber in der Literatur kaum eine gesammelte Dbersicht. Die funktionelle Padologie dar- zustellen, kann nicht als eine Aufgabe der padiatrischen Lehrbiicher angesehen werden. Aber selbst dem wissenschaftlich Arbeitenden fallt eine entsprechende Orientierung schwer, weil zusammenfassende Darstellungen der Originalliteratur fehlen. Dies ist um so erstaunlicher, als funktionelle Vorgange im jungen Kindes- alter haufige Krankheitsursachen darstellen.

Crop wild relatives (CWR) are plant species which are more or less closely related to crops. They are a vital resource by providing a pool of genetic variation that can be used in breeding new and better adapted varieties of crops that are resistant to stress, disease, drought and other factors. They will be increasingly important in allowing crops to adapt to the impacts of climate, thus safeguarding future agricultural production. Until recently, the main conservation strategy adopted for CWR has been ex situ - through the maintenance of samples as seed or vegetative material in various kinds of genebank or other facilities. Now the need to conserve CWR in their natural surroundings (in situ) is increasingly recognized. Recent research co-ordinated by Bioversity International has produced a wealth of information on good practices and lessons learned for their effective conservation. This book captures the important practical experiences of countries participating in this work and describes them for the wider conservation community. It includes case studies and examples from Armenia, Bolivia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan, which are important centres of diversity for crop wild relatives, and covers four geographical regions - the Caucasus, South America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific Region. Philosopher Quassim Cassam explains how conspiracy theories are different from ordinary theories about conspiracies. He argues that conspiracy theories are forms of propaganda and their function is to promote a political agenda. Although conspiracy theories are sometimes defended on the grounds that they uncover evidence of bad behaviour by political leaders, they do much more harm than good, with some resulting in the deaths of large numbers of people. There can be no clearer indication that something has gone wrong with our intellectual and political culture than the fact that conspiracy theories have become mainstream. When they are dangerous, we cannot afford to ignore them. At the same time, refuting them by rational argument is difficult because conspiracy theorists discount or reject evidence that disproves their theories. As conspiracy theories are so often smokescreens for political ends, we need to come up with political as well as intellectual responses if we are to have any hope of defeating them.

As people become increasingly mobile, ethnic identity becomes more important as a means of negotiating transnational encounters; however, at the same time, the opportunities it offers are rooted in local cultural practices, requiring professionals and other migrants to develop complex social strategies that link and cross the global and local levels. With rich ethnographic detail, this book contributes to the understanding of the migrant experience and how it varies from location to location, how migration more generally changes in response to wider socioeconomic factors, and, finally, of the specific case of Taiwan and how the distinctive nature of its diaspora emerges through wider discourses of Chineseness and pan-Asian identity.
