New venture founders and their sponsors seek to create economic value by finding and commercializing new and better ways of doing things. Their common goal, which also defines the purpose of the entrepreneurial process itself, requires a better grasp of the key elements that influence the choices involved in attempting to create economic value under highly uncertain conditions. It also requires a deeper understanding of the consequences of new venture investment as well as the various contextual factors that influence investment decisions and venture outcomes. When confronted with a particular decision making problem faced by entrepreneurs and new venture investors, academic scholars analyze how and why the problem in question is a special case of some theory or model which they know. In seeking to detect generalities and to make abstracted sense of observed realities, academics generally classify the problem in a way that is a natural consequence of the specific discipline- or field-based knowledge they possess (Davidsson, 2002). The explanations that academic researchers provide and the predictions they make are therefore likely to be framed in terms of the types of variables, theoretical perspectives, levels of analysis, and research methodologies with which they are familiar. In seeking to explore the intellectual underpinnings of new venture investment, we have gathered and organized a set of papers that provide scholarly analysis of the choices involved in new venture investment as well as the various contextual factors that influence investment outcomes. To insure a more robust and hopefully interesting scholarly treatment of such problems, we sought to include a variety of interdisciplinary and international perspectives that reflect a broad range of theoretical and empirical approaches.

Like its predecessors, this fourth edition of Japanese Americans and World War II is intended as a succinct and affordable supplement to history and political science texts that minimize or neglect the Nikkei (Japanese American) experience in World War II. As was hoped, the first two editions of this publication found an enthusiastic reception by instructors and students alike at the high school, community college, and university level. In addition, the expanded third edition found a new readership beyond the classroom, in members of and visitors to museums, such as the Japanese American Museum in Los Angeles, and interpretive centers at former concentration camp sites administered by the National Park Service at Manzanar, Tule Lake, and others (some in progress). Gary Steiner argues that ethologists and philosophers in the analytic and continental traditions have largely failed to advance an adequate explanation of animal behavior. Critically engaging the positions of Marc Hauser, Daniel Dennett, Donald Davidson, John Searle, Martin Heidegger, and Hans-Georg Gadamer, among others, Steiner shows how the Western philosophical tradition has forced animals into human experiential categories in order to make sense of their cognitive abilities and moral status and how desperately we need a new approach to animal rights. Steiner rejects the traditional assumption that a lack of formal rationality confers an inferior moral status on animals vis-a-vis human beings. Instead, he offers an associationist view of animal cognition in which animals grasp and adapt to their environments without employing concepts or intentionality. Steiner challenges the standard assumption of liberal individualism according to which humans have no obligations of justice toward animals. Instead, he advocates a "cosmic holism" that attributes a moral status to animals equivalent to that of people. Arguing for a relationship of justice between humans and nature, Steiner emphasizes our kinship with animals and the fundamental moral obligations entailed by this kinship.

"Real" knowing always involves a political dimension, Linda Martín Alcoff suggests. But this does not mean we need to give up realism or the possibility of truth. Recent work in continental philosophy insists on the influence that power and desire exert on knowing, whereas contemporary analytic philosophy largely ignores these political concerns in its accounts of justification and truth. Alcoff engages these traditionally conflicting approaches in a constructive dialogue, effectively spanning the analytic/continental divide.In provocative readings of major figures in the continental tradition, Alcoff shows that the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Michel Foucault can help rectify key problems in coherence epistemology, such as the link between coherence and truth. Im ersten Teil "Matthäus im Kontext" wird zum einen das Verhältnis der matthäischen Gemeinde(n) zum Judentum erörtert; zum anderen werden zentrale Fragen des theologiegeschichtlichen Standorts des Matthäusevangeliums innerhalb des entstehenden Christentums diskutiert, indem das Matthäusevangelium als ein judenchristlicher Gegenentwurf zum Markusevangelium eingeordnet, die These einer antipaulinischen Ausrichtung kritisch geprüft und das Verhältnis zum Jakobusbrief und zur Didache thematisiert wird. Die Aufsätze in der zweiten Rubrik kreisen um die in der matthäischen Theologie eng miteinander zusammenhängenden Themen der Christologie (wie Davidsohnschaft, königliche Züge der Messianologie, Taufe des Gottessohnes) und der Israeltheologie (Verhältnis von Sendung zu Israel und Völkermission, Deutung der Zerstörung Jerusalems). Der dritte Teil versammelt - neben einer Studie zur Rede vom Glauben in Heilungsgeschichten - Arbeiten zu grundlegenden Aspekten matthäischer Ethik, namentlich zur Bedeutung der Tora und zur Gesetzesinterpretation (Dekalog, Vergeltungsverzicht und Feindesliebe) sowie zum in Mt 18 dargebotenen Gemeinschaftsethos und zu Mitleid und Barmherzigkeit als ethischer Haltung.Neben bereits veröffentlichten Aufsätzen, die für diesen Sammelband durchgesehen, aktualisiert und z.T. erheblich überarbeitet wurden, bietet der Band auch Studien, die hier zum ersten Mal erscheinen.
