Little has been written about Royal Marines rotary aviation, the small and select unit which operated light helicopters between 1965 and 1995. Officer and senior non-commissioned officer pilots had the unique privilege of being both Commandos and aviators, flying from warships and operating ashore in support of the Royal Marines. Initially called Unit Air Troops, which then coalesced into 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron Royal Marines, they operated in hostile environments, including the Arctic, mountains, jungles and deserts. Robert Wilsey served in the Royal Marines from 1969 to 2000. Having qualified as a pilot he served through much of the existence of the Royal Marines Air Squadron, from a junior pilot right up to becoming its commanding officer. In this unique book, the author tells of the evolution and technological advances of Royal Marines aviation, flying the Westland Sioux, Scout, Gazelle, and, ultimately, Lynx helicopters. When the US Marine Commandant, Major General Thomas Holcomb, announced the formation of what became the US Marine Corps' Women's Reserve, legend has it that the portrait of the fifth Commandant, Archibald Henderson, fell off the wall and crashed to the floor - in disbelief'. This branch of the US Marines was authorized by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 30 July 1942. This law allowed for the acceptance of women into the reserve as commissioned officers and at the enlisted level, effective for the duration of the war plus six months. The purpose of the law was to release officers and men for combat and to replace them with women in shore stations. The result was that between 1943 and 1945 the women of America enlisted in their thousands to Free A Marine to Fight'. This book, the first of its kind, explores in detail the role of Women Marines, or WRs as they were known at the time. It also presents a detailed study of the uniforms of the WRs supported by numerous colour photographs. On August 17–18, 1942, 211 men of the US Marine Corps’ 2nd Raider Battalion conducted a daring amphibious raid on the Japanese-occupied Makin Island in the South Pacific. This ambitious but flawed operation was intended to divert Japanese reinforcements bound for Guadalcanal, over 1,000 miles to the southwest, in the wake of the US landings there ten days earlier; the Raiders were to destroy the seaplane base and radio station, take prisoners, and collect intelligence. At the border between documentary and fiction, the work of Marine Hugonnier constitutes an exploration of the politics of the gaze. His works are an attempt to deconstruct the inherent complicity between the gaze and political ideologies. His work thus aims to question the cultural and political framework that conforms each point of view. His films, which can be described as experimental films or film essays, are sometimes associated with visual anthropology, his field of investigation being the space that separates the subject from his observer. She travelled a lot with her Aaton s16 mm camera on her shoulder, adopting the posture of the reporter and the ethnographer more than that of the artist, mixing images and genres. For Marine Hugonnier, producing images involves thinking about them. Cinema is conceived by the artist as a political act. A filmmaker above all, the artist also practices photography and creates works on paper. Her artistic research transversally addresses feminism, gender fluidity, anti-colonialism and issues related to the convergence between human and non-human. Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) is one of the most important women artists in art after 1960. Over her decades-long career, she produced an extensive and singular oeuvre in the fields of painting, drawing, and graphic reproductions, with intermittent excursions into (animation) film and sculpture. At the centre of her work are visualisations of physical perceptions, or so-called body-awareness pictures. Her painstaking self-analyses are also expressed in numerous self-portraits. Helmut Klewan accompanied Maria Lassnig as a gallerist for over three decades. This led to the development of a rich inventory of oil paintings and works on paper as well as one sculpture.
