Introduced in 1941, the Short Stirling was the Royal Air Force’s first four-engine heavy bomber of the Second World War. However, early on, the Stirling’s performance was compromised by several issues: a reduced wingspan, which resulted in serious limitations on maximum altitude capability; the two-stage landing gear proved to be dangerously frail; and the bomb-bay design proved incapable of carrying large-scale blockbuster bombs. Its altitude ceiling limitations left the aircraft particularly vulnerable to isolation and dispatch by enemy night fighters within the bomber stream, and it was these factors that ultimately led to its withdrawal from Britain’s strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe. By November 1943, it was replaced by the more effective Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster. However, it did see important second-line duty in the glider-towing, paratroop drop, minelaying, and supply roles. The Stirling also saw post-WWII duties as a passenger transport up to the late 1940s. This book is a concise, visual history of this lesser-known RAF WWII bomber.

Developed during the Second World War, but too late to see combat, the Twin Mustang was created by the engineering team at North American Aviation to provide long-range escort for larger, slow bombers. With the outbreak of the Korean Conflict, the Twin Mustangs were fortuitously positioned to provide immediate impact to the advantage of United Nations forces in the opening stages of the action. Later, a record-breaking long-distance flight was accomplished by a single aircraft, and the type was found useful for testing numerous experimental designs, from ramjet bodies to the first air-to-air missile concepts. The plane was effective as a radar-toting night fighter, and it could also carry large bombs, rockets, extended-range fuel tanks, and an eight-gun nacelle, providing a substantial increase in machine gun firepower. This book also details the amazing story of XP-82 44-83887 from test bed use, to a landing accident and disposal, to its discovery and restoration to flying status. A gritty, unglamorous, unfiltered look at the daily life of an American transport pilot in the WWII Burma theater. Arthur La Vove was born in Manhattan in 1909, the son of a French military attaché. Arthur flew commercial airliners for Century Airways and United in 1930s. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, he volunteered for the Army Air Force. Any enthusiasm that Arthur had for the conflict quickly eroded once he arrived in the CBI, the China-Burma-India theater of operations, for service with Air Transport Command. La Vove was a “Hump Pilot,” conducting the hazardous duty of ferrying men and material over the Himalayan Mountains, propping up American, Commonwealth, and Chinese Nationalist forces in their struggle against the Japanese in South Asia. The aircraft of the day were not well suited to handle the extreme environment, and the Himalayas remain littered with the remnants of aircraft and their crew who did not make it over the Hump. Arthur survived the war and studied journalism at Columbia University. He lived a long and prosperous life, excelling in various pursuits including writing, flying, and car racing. As to be expected from a professional journalist, Arthur’s account of the Second World War is exceptionally articulate in its prose. More unusual is the dark tone of the narrative, ranging from visceral descriptions of violence to biting irony and bitter humor. Like most WWII combat veterans, Arthur and his friends suffered multitude depredations during their time in theater, and some never returned home. What is exceptional about La Vove’s writing, particularly for an American, is that he clearly felt these sacrifices were made in vain. Each chapter begins with an original sketch by the author, drawn in-theater. This is an unusually eloquent and poignant account of service in WWII by a man who lived it.
