Museum Tusculanum Press Traditional Inuit Songs from the Thule Area
2 books & a CD. This study provides a comprehensive description of the rich song culture of the people in the Thule area in Greenland, the Inughuit. In 1937 the archaeologist and folklorist Erik Holtved recorded 134 traditional songs in Thule. Transcriptions and scientific processing of this collection constitute the nucleus of the work. Another collection of Inughuit songs was recorded in 1962 for The Danish Folklore Archives by Bent Jensen and the author. The songs from both collections are presented and notated in full length and also with analyses of a representative stanza from each song. Descriptions are given of performing habits, singing methods, drum construction and handling, as well as historical and recent data. Searching for resemblances among other Inuit groups produced transcriptions and analyses of many traditional Inuit Songs from different localities in Canada. It was discovered that characteristic traits of the form and melody types of the Inughuit are linked to Canadian Inuit groups in southern Baffin Island and among the Copper Inuit in northern Canada, documenting particular areas of origin, and also giving information about migration routes. Many of the songs are presented on the enclosed CD

Museum Tusculanum Press Nordic Orientalism
This book explores the appropriation of Oriental imagery within Danish and Norwegian 19th century nation-building. The project queries Edward Said's binary notion of Orientalism and posits a more complex model describing how European counties on the periphery -- Denmark and Norway -- imported oriental imagery from France to position themselves, not against their colonial Other, but in relation to central European nations. Examining Nordic Orientalism across a century in the context of modernisation, urbanisation and democratisation the study furthermore shows how the Romanticists' naive treatment of the Orient was challenged by increased contact with the 'real' Orient.

Museum Tusculanum Press Pre-Islamic Coinage of Eastern Arabia
A presentation of the various indigenous coin issues that circulated in Eastern Arabia during the pre-Islamic era as attested in five private collections studied by the author. The basis for the classification is a corpus of 529 coins selected from those collections for publication here. Geographically, the coins came from two distinct regions which today comprise the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Emirate of Umm al-Qaiwain in the United Arab Emirates. Foreign issues were rare in these areas, although a handful of Sasanian, Roman, Seleucid, Greek, Phoenician, Nabataean, Elymaean, Parthian and Sabaean coins have been attested to in the collections that form the basis of this work.

Museum Tusculanum Press Modernitet eller åndsdannelse?: Engelsk i skole og samfund 1800-1935
The book outlines this development and discusses questions, such as: Why did it take so long for the English language to become part of the general education? What connected the Danish political-cultural orientation after 1964 and the development of the language subjects in the schools? Why was the school of Modern languages successful at first when later, in the 1930s, it came up against an identity crisis? The book provides a historical perspective for the topical debate in the upper secondary schools and proves that many of the arguments in this debate have been heard before.
