Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Muslim Sources of the Crusader Period: An Anthology
Drawn from greater Syria, northern Mesopotamia, and Egypt, the sources in this anthology—many of which are translated into English for the first time here--provide eyewitness and contemporary historical accounts of what unfolded in the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. In providing representative examples of the many disparate types of Muslim sources, this volume opens a window onto life in the Islamic Near East during the Crusader period and the interactions between Franks and Muslims in the broader context of Islamic history. Ideally suited for use in undergraduate courses on the Crusades or the pre-modern Islamic Near East, this anthology will also appeal to any readers seeking a better understanding of the Islamic response to the Crusades and the general history of the Near East in this period.

Johns Hopkins University Press Faces of the Civil War Navies: An Album of Union and Confederate Sailors
During the American Civil War, more than one hundred thousand men fought on ships at sea or on one of America's great inland rivers. There were no large-scale fleet engagements, yet the navies, particularly the Union Navy, did much to define the character of the war and affect its length. The first hostile shots roared from rebel artillery at Charleston Harbor. Along the Mississippi River and other inland waterways across the South, Union gunboats were often the first to arrive in deadly enemy territory. In the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic seaboard, blockaders in blue floated within earshot of gray garrisons that guarded vital ports. And on the open seas, rebel raiders wreaked havoc on civilian shipping. In Faces of the Civil War Navies, renowned researcher and Civil War photograph collector Ronald S. Coddington focuses his considerable skills on the Union and Confederate navies. Using identifiable cartes de visite of common sailors on both sides of the war, many of them never before published, Coddington uncovers the personal histories of each individual who looked into the eye of the primitive camera. These unique narratives are drawn from military and pension records, letters, diaries, period newspapers, and other primary sources. In addition to presenting the personal stories of seventy-seven intrepid volunteers, Coddington also focuses on the momentous naval events that ushered in an era of ironclad ships and other technical innovations. The fourth volume in Coddington's series on Civil War soldiers, this microhistory will appeal to anyone with an interest in the Civil War, social history, or photography. The narratives and photographs in Faces of the Civil War Navies shed new light on a lesser-known part of our American story. Taken collectively, these "snapshots" remind us that the history of war is not merely a chronicle of campaigns won and lost, it is the collective personal odysseys of thousands of individual life stories.

John Wiley & Sons Inc The Heston Model and its Extensions in Matlab and C#, + Website
Tap into the power of the most popular stochastic volatility model for pricing equity derivatives Since its introduction in 1993, the Heston model has become a popular model for pricing equity derivatives, and the most popular stochastic volatility model in financial engineering. This vital resource provides a thorough derivation of the original model, and includes the most important extensions and refinements that have allowed the model to produce option prices that are more accurate and volatility surfaces that better reflect market conditions. The book's material is drawn from research papers and many of the models covered and the computer codes are unavailable from other sources. The book is light on theory and instead highlights the implementation of the models. All of the models found here have been coded in Matlab and C#. This reliable resource offers an understanding of how the original model was derived from Ricatti equations, and shows how to implement implied and local volatility, Fourier methods applied to the model, numerical integration schemes, parameter estimation, simulation schemes, American options, the Heston model with time-dependent parameters, finite difference methods for the Heston PDE, the Greeks, and the double Heston model. A groundbreaking book dedicated to the exploration of the Heston model—a popular model for pricing equity derivatives Includes a companion website, which explores the Heston model and its extensions all coded in Matlab and C# Written by Fabrice Douglas Rouah a quantitative analyst who specializes in financial modeling for derivatives for pricing and risk management Engaging and informative, this is the first book to deal exclusively with the Heston Model and includes code in Matlab and C# for pricing under the model, as well as code for parameter estimation, simulation, finite difference methods, American options, and more.

Emerald Publishing Limited Tribal Play: Subcultural Journeys Through Sport
Traceable as far back as the work of the path-breaking Chicago School of Sociology in the 1920s and 1930s, subculture and counterculture have long been conceptual staples of the discipline. Implemented originally to designate and describe smaller, often deviant or delinquent, groups within larger social communities, the terms gained pace in their use in mid-twentieth century criminological research, and especially with the development of Cultural Studies in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, where they became widely used to describe processes of social class-based opposition, resistance and protest. More recently, sociologists have moved beyond a strict conformity-resistance model in accounting for the behaviour of sub-communities that coalesce around particular values, behaviours, or preferences.Indeed, contemporary sociological research has raised the possibility that the term subculture in particular may have entirely outgrown its usefulness. While the term counterculture has also languished, there is no doubt that the sorts of social groups to which these terms have historically referred are more extensive and colourful than ever. Certainly this is the case in sport. Put simply, all societies are replete with their own versions of Tribal Play which encompass and represent wider social patterns, processes, and struggles. This volume is a collection of 16 readings on aspects of sub-community life in sport that showcases the breadth and depth of sport subcultural research by a group of international scholars representing varied theoretical and methodological orientations. Some of the sport communities examined include soccer hooligans, endurance athletes, disabled athletes, environmentally conscious surfers, and X-Games participants. This fourth volume in the "Research in the Sociology of Sport" series is edited by two sociologists whose academic training, research and teaching span three of the subdisciplines in which the concepts of subculture and counterculture have been most avidly used and critically tested (Criminology/Youth/Sport), and whose subcultural ventures both in sport and as sociologists are extensive. Michael Atkinson is Senior Lecturer in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University in the UK, and Kevin Young is Professor of Sociology at the University of Calgary, Canada.

Harvard University Press The Poems of Emily Dickinson: Variorum Edition
Emily Dickinson, poet of the interior life, imagined words/swords, hurling barbed syllables/piercing. Nothing about her adult appearance or habitation revealed such a militant soul. Only poems, written quietly in a room of her own, often hand-stitched in small volumes, then hidden in a desk drawer, revealed her true self. She did not live in time, as did that other great poet of the day, Walt Whitman, but in universals. As she knowingly put it: “There is one thing to be grateful for—that one is one’s self and not somebody else.”Dickinson lived and died without fame: she saw only a few poems published. Her great legacy was later rescued from her desk drawer—an astonishing body of work revealing her acute, sensitive nature reaching out boldly from self-referral to a wider, imagined world. Her family sought publication of Dickinson’s poetry over the years, selecting verses, often altering her words or her punctuation, until, in 1955, the first important attempt was made to collect and publish Dickinson’s work, edited by Thomas H. Johnson for the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. Now, after many years of preparation by Ralph W. Franklin, the foremost scholar of Dickinson’s manuscripts, a new comprehensive edition is available. This three-volume work contains 1,789 poems, the largest number ever assembled. The poems, arranged chronologically, based on new dating, are drawn from a range of archives, most frequently from holographs, but also from various secondary sources representing lost manuscripts. The text of each manuscript is rendered individually, including, within the capacity of standard type, Dickinson’s spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Franklin gives Dickinson’s alternative readings for the poems, her revisions, and the line and page, or column, divisions in the source. Each entry identifies Franklin’s editorial emendations and records the publication history, including variants. Fourteen appendices of tables and lists give additional information, including poems attributed to Emily Dickinson. The poems are indexed by numbers from the Johnson edition, as well as by first lines.Franklin has provided an introduction that serves as a guide to this edition and surveys the history of the editing of Dickinson’s poems. His account of how Dickinson conducted her workshop is a reconstruction of a remarkable poetic life.

Cambridge University Press Ennius' Annals: Poetry and History
In the context of recent challenges to long-standing assumptions about the nature of Ennius' Annals and the editorial methods appropriate to the poem's fragmentary remains, this volume seeks to move Ennian studies forward on three axes. First, a re-evaluation of the literary and historical precedents for and building blocks of Ennius' poem in order to revise the history of early Latin literature. Second, a cross-fertilization of recent critical approaches to the fields of poetry and historiography. Third, reflection on the tools and methods that will best serve future literary and historical research on the Annals and its reception. Adopting different approaches to these broad topics, the fourteen papers in this volume illustrate how much can be said about Ennius' poem and its place in literary history independent of any commitment to inevitably speculative totalizing interpretations.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Chaucer and Religion

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Social Reformism 2.0: Work, Welfare and Progressive Politics in the 21st Century
Automation, digitalisation, the post-industrial transition and climate change are creating new social risks which are not adequately supported by established welfare state institutions. In this timely book, Maurizio Ferrera, Joan Miró and Stefano Ronchi propose critical social and institutional policy reform in response to the nation state’s inability to maintain a balanced ecosystem between democracy, the market economy, welfare and the rule of law. Social Reformism 2.0 provides a diagnosis of the critical issues facing the welfare state, namely the transition to post-industrialisation, globalisation and European integration, and the fourth technological revolution. Situating the European social model within a multi-crisis context, this book surveys the current reform trends in social policy, addressing decades of global development, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate emergency, before proposing a number of strategic policy reforms. It ultimately champions a transition towards a greener economy and a realignment of progressive politics, highlighting the central role Europe plays in coordinating and stimulating change. Offering a highly detailed yet accessible critique, this socially pertinent study will strongly appeal to students and academics with an interest in political science, European studies, sociology, social and public policy analysis and welfare state research. It will also highly benefit policymakers, bureaucrats, practitioners and stakeholders involved in social governance processes at a national and European level.

Pennsylvania State University Press Times of Transition: Judea in the Early Hellenistic Period
This multidisciplinary study takes a fresh look at Judean history and biblical literature in the late fourth and third centuries BCE. In a major reappraisal of this era, the contributions to this volume depict it as one in which critical changes took place.Until recently, the period from Alexander’s conquest in 332 BCE to the early years of Seleucid domination following Antiochus III’s conquest in 198 BCE was reputed to be poorly documented in material evidence and textual production, buttressing the view that the era from late Persian to Hasmonean times was one of seamless continuity. Biblical scholars believed that no literary activity belonged to the Hellenistic age, and archaeologists were unable to refine their understanding because of a lack of secure chronological markers. However, recent studies are revealing this period as one of major social changes and intense literary activity. Historians have shed new light on the nature of the Hellenistic empires and the relationship between the central power and local entities in ancient imperial settings, and the redating of several biblical texts to the third century BCE challenges the traditional periodization of Judean history.Bringing together Hellenistic history, the archaeology of Judea, and biblical studies, this volume appraises the early Hellenistic period anew as a time of great transition and change and situates Judea within its broader regional and transregional imperial contexts.

Peeters Publishers A Late Christian Pilgrimage Centre in Nubia: The Evidence of Wall Inscriptions in the Upper Church at Banganarti
The book is a publication of nearly one thousand wall inscriptions preserved in the so-called Upper Church at Banganarti (Sudanese Nubia), discovered by a Polish expedition between 2001 and 2006. In overwhelming majority, the inscriptions are mementos left by people who visited this cult place to pay homage to its patron, Archangel Raphael, and to ask him or God through his intermediary for various benefactions. Written in either Greek or Old Nubian, and frequently displaying a sophisticated graphic and literary form, they cast an interesting light on different aspects of social, cultural, and religious life of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria towards the end of its existence (twelfth-fourteenth centuries). The catalogue of inscriptions is complemented by a study addressing general questions provoked by the texts. The book is richly illustrated with plans, photographs and drawings.

Peeters Publishers La Description Du Francais Entre La Tradition Grammaticale Et La Modernite Linguistique: Etude Historiographique Et Epistemologique De La Grammaire Francaise Entre 1907 Et 1948

Saturnalia Books Steal It Back
What if all women try to Steal It Back? America, art, life. They're in Sephora, on Twitter, at McDonald's. They're single mothers and teachers, Catholic schoolgirls and martyrs. And they're all stealing it back. Sylvia Plath gets a Malibu beach house. Lady Gaga hatches from an egg of triumph. They're hovering between the tax collectors and the Romantics, between Florida's lakes and every lavish thing in seventeenth-century France. Steal It Back journeys through America's factories, its Bed Bath & Beyonds, and its homes, where desires rise and fall, where they decide what they will fight for and what they will concede. Steal It Back, Sandra Simonds's fourth poetry collection, is a primal scream that we can't help but pay attention to.

Bloodaxe Books Ltd Lumen
How might poetry help us articulate the body in illness, in work, and in love? Tiffany Atkinson’s fourth collection includes the prize-winning sequence ‘Dolorimeter’, which takes fragments of speech and found text from a hospital residency to pay homage to the inventiveness and humour of patients and staff in a series of meditations on the notion that pain resists language. Away from the wards, other poems consider the strangeness of the workplace and the embarrassing incursions of desire into everyday life, celebrating the ability of poetic language to lay awkwardness and uncertainty alongside unexpected openings and glimpses of revelation. A lumen is a unit of light, but also a channel or an opening inside the body; perhaps, in this collection, it may also serve as a metaphor for the work of the poem itself. Poetry Book Society Recommendation.
