This is a biographical study of Jose Carlos Mariategui, one of Latin America's greatest literary figures, which is organized around the Lima scandal of 1917. At the time he was a young journalist of 23, an autodidact intellectual with an insurrectionary character. The scandal erupted when he led a small group to the General Cemetery where a dancer gave her interpretation of Chopin's Funeral March. Although the participants wished to have an artistic experience, the reaction of the Lima elite was negative: the performance was viewed in terms of "lewdness" and "desecration," the participants were arrested, placed in prison, their case was forwarded for criminal prosecution, and the daily newspapers made the most out of the incident. This study focuses on the scandal in the context of Peruvian society in 1917. It examines the roots of Mariategui's rebellion by exploring his manner of dealing with lameness and physical mutilation, the desertion of his family by his father and Mariategui's search for a father figure, his humble Andean roots on his mother's side, and his ambivalence—half yearning, half hostility—toward his father's elite social sector. Throughout the work Mariategui's writings are quoted as illustrations and supplements to points made in the text. The object is to answer the questions: Why a dance? Why a cemetery? And why a dance in a cemetery?—by looking at patterns of repetition in Mariategui's life. The study becomes a psychobiography as well as a literary one.

How do women use courts within the context of paternity lawsuits? This study analyzes the challenges that the formal legal approach to empowering women faces once it is translated into everyday socio-legal experiences and court repertoires. It also seeks to trace the pathologies inherent in personal status law reform and normal legal practices in Egypt, attesting to the limitations of law as an agent of social change in the private domain of the family. It mainly sheds light on the difficulties of separating formal legal rules from informal social practices. It also explores the problem of paternity claims in Egypt. Adding to growing literature on the use of legal mobilization to advance gender equity, this study offers insights on the often-neglected role of social norms in court experiences, often leading to unexpected consequences that sometimes defy the intended goals behind policies and legislation.

Tel est le moindre paradoxe du mariage comme topos, heureux ou malheureux selon sa place dans le recit. La production narrative europeenne, du moyen-age a la fin du dix-huitieme siecle, offre un eventail extremement riche et diversifie de situations recurrentes (en d'autres termes de topoi) concernant le mariage. Or, dans la meme periode, le mariage est une institution et un sacrement en debat. A partir du seizieme siecle, de nouvelles lois, l'affirmation des droits de la subjectivite et des individus, en particulier des femmes, les guerres civiles et religieuses, la decouverte d'autres peuples et de coutumes etrangeres eveillent la reflexion et nourrissent les controverses. Comment s'articulent alors l'ordre du recit, les normes internes et externes a la fiction, et la perception du mariage comme probleme? C'est une certaine conception du pouvoir des fictions, en particulier dans leur rapport a la loi, qui est en jeu dans cette interaction complexe. Les etudes ici reunies envisagent les fictions comme des experiences de pensee permettant la conciliation, la compensation, le deplacement ou la deconstruction de conflits reels. C'est tantot la valeur subversive des fictions, tantot leur visee educative et morale, ou leur vertu consolatrice qui est soulignee. L'experience que nous faisons de mondes possibles plus ou moins desirables interroge et ameliore peut-etre, en effet, notre facon d'etre au monde. Sans doute est-ce la une des raisons du retour du stereotype, de sa contestation et de sa restauration constantes.

When a war ends provisionally, the agreement is called a ceasefire. But when peace ends, there is only war. War and peace are co-dependent. Perhaps it is now time for a “Peacefire.” In Maintenant 17: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art, nearly 250 artists from more than 40 countries explore the concept of the end of both war and peace, exploring provocative outsider ideas as dada has done since its inception. With searing cover art by Uta Kaxniashvili, this issue of the renowned journal elaborates on dada’s original premise as an antiwar movement. The Maintenant series, established in 2008, explores themes of politics, humanity, philosophy, and current concerns from an antiwar, anarchic (and often eye-opening) perspective. Past issues include work by artists Mark Kostabi, Raymond Pettibon, Joel Hubaut, Heide Hatry, Avelino de Araujo, Pawel Kuczynski, Inas Al-Soqi, Giovanni Fontana, Nicole Eisenmann, Syporca Whandal, and Kazunori Murakami; past writers have included Gerard Malanga, Charles Plymell, Andrei Codrescu, Harry E.
