In the course of his long and distinguished scholarly career, Jan Lambrecht has been a prolific writer from both an academic and a pastoral perspective. Since 1994, attempts have been in process to collect as many as possible of his shorter writings into volumes that would be more accessible, resulting in four publications up to this point.In 1994, many of Professor Lambrecht's writings on Paul appeared in "Pauline Studies" (BETL, 115) and, together with some from his former student, Reimund Bieringer, in "Studies on 2 Corinthians" (BETL, 112). In 2001, upon completion of his teaching at the Biblicum, he was honored with a volume of "Collected Studies" (AnBibl, 147) representing his then more recent works. This volume, as its full title indicates, consists for the most part of studies on Pauline literature and the Book of Revelation, but it also includes a short article on Christian freedom in 1 Peter.In 2002, a collection of articles in Dutch, some that had appeared previously and some new, was published as "De kracht van het geloof" ("The Power of Belief"). Nonetheless, there remain some of his works that have not yet been brought into a collection, and important articles in the recent Dutch collection are not available to a wider audience. This present offering attempts to address that situation.Although the twenty-two studies in the present volume have all been written or published relatively recently, they are reflective of Professor Lambrecht's academic and pastoral interests over his entire career, ranging from Mark's use of Matthew, and possibly Q, to the Book of Revelation, and including Luke, Acts, and Paul.Some of the writing is less technical because of the audience for which it was intended. On April 4, 1866, just as Alexander II stepped out of Saint Petersburg's Summer Garden and onto the boulevard, a young man named Dmitry Karakozov pulled out a pistol and shot at the tsar. He missed, but his "unheard-of act" changed the course of Russian history—and gave birth to the revolutionary political violence known as terrorism. Based on clues pulled out of the pockets of Karakozov's peasant disguise, investigators concluded that there had been a conspiracy so extensive as to have sprawled across the entirety of the Russian empire and the European continent. Karakozov was said to have been a member of "The Organization," a socialist network at the center of which sat a secret cell of suicide-assassins: "Hell." It is still unclear how much of this "conspiracy" theory was actually true, but of the thirty-six defendants who stood accused during what was Russia's first modern political trial, all but a few were exiled to Siberia, and Karakozov himself was publicly hanged on September 3, 1866. Because Karakozov was decidedly strange, sick, and suicidal, his failed act of political violence has long been relegated to a footnote of Russian history. In The Odd Man Karakozov, however, Claudia Verhoeven argues that it is precisely this neglected, exceptional case that sheds a new light on the origins of terrorism. The book not only demonstrates how the idea of terrorism first emerged from the reception of Karakozov's attack, but also, importantly, what was really at stake in this novel form of political violence, namely, the birth of a new, modern political subject. The surprising success of Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate and Easy Rider in the late 60s marks a turning-point in the history of the American cinema, as these are films that differ fundamentally from the traditional Hollywood style. They revised the traditional genre formulae and overturned the rules of classical narrative structure, but they were also aimed at a young audience influenced by alternative culture, a group that the big studios had ignored until then. The American film industry, which was in financial crisis and a phase of artistic stagnation in the sixties because it had tried to meet increasing competition from television by producing blockbusters, started to think again, and became more receptive to new ideas. This created a degree of artistic scope that young directors and filmmakers with artistic ambitions were not slow to exploit in order to realise their creative ideas in the context of mainstream cinema. A period of artistic renewal began, of a kind that had never been possible before in America on such a radical scale. The first wave of New Hollywood was starting to die down in 1971, as the films were often too experimental, too self-referential and too alien for a mass audience, and the market for the limited target group of a young audience interested in culture was quickly saturated. But important stimuli emerged, and made it possible for a series of film-makers like Robert Altman, Arthur Penn, Mike Nichols, Alan Pakula, Sydney Pollack, Stanley Kubrick, Sam Peckinpah, Paul Mazursky, Hal Ashby and ultimately an exceptional figure like Woody Allen establish themselves permanently. They were joined in the seventies by the younger generation of so-called 'whiz kids' like Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, William Friedkin, Martin Scorcese, Steven Spielberg, Brian De Palma, Paul Schrader or George Lucas. They all represented the liberation of the director from the dictates of the studio, the acquisition of a right to have individual artistic handwriting and the era of the director as superstar.

The Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1953-58 organised and led by Sir Vivian Fuchs and supported by Sir Edmund Hillary was one of the most extraordinary exploits ever undertaken in Antarctica - but it has been underappreciated. On the sixtieth anniversary of the crossing, this book tells the complete story of this remarkable episode in the history of exploration. The Crossing is illustrated with photographs from the Royal Geographical Society, with the kind permission of Mary Lowe, widow of expedition photographer George Lowe, and from Peter and Sarah Hillary and the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Sir Ernest Shackleton had tried unsuccessfully to cross the Antarctic in 1914. He called it the Last Great Journey, but he and his men escaped by the skin of their teeth. The new post-war expedition was therefore, with knowledge of what had gone before, a brave attempt to conquer the vast frozen continent. For this historic endeavour, planning had to be done at opposite ends of the Earth, in the UK and New Zealand, and members of the expedition were drawn from the Commonwealth. The plan was meticulous but flawed, and the stakes were high: national, political and scientific interests all depended on its success. John Knight's account shows how the expedition was organised, from the scientific insight it relied on, to the voyage to Antarctica and the choice of the largely mechanised transport intended to carry the men across the ice desert - though the courageous dog teams would be crucial as pathfinders. Survival at times was touch and go, and controversies arose amid the pressure of the journey. This book not only provides a technical insight into a ground-breaking venture but touches on the human aspects of the challenge. Crucially, did Ed Hillary exceed his remit by pushing on south, when his specific instructions were to establish depots for ‘Bunny’ Fuchs’s journey, not to engage in a ‘Second Race to the Pole’? De geschiedenis van het Nederlandse lied begint met het nietige Hebban olla vogala op het schutblad van een Oudengels handschrift en gaat spaarzaam verder met liederen die meer dan eens in de marges van handschriften, in rekeningen of in kronieken verscholen zitten. Maar aan het eind van de middeleeuwen wast dit vaak ondergronds lopende beekje aan tot een flinke stroom en in de zestiende eeuw tot een vloed van vele duizenden liederen. Zowel de aanvankelijke schaarste als de latere overvloed stelt de onderzoeker voor problemen. Voor de vroegere periode kan een enkel liedje dat tot hiertoe verborgen bleef, onvermoede samenhangen zichtbaar maken. In de late periode riskeert de onderzoeker juist door het grote aantal de verbanden niet meer te zien. Sinds enkele jaren werken Vlaamse en Nederlandse onderzoekers samen aan een repertorium van Nederlandse liederen van voor 1600. Tijdens een symposium op 28 februari 1996 te Antwerpen hebben zij laten zien welk soort onderzoek zo'n inventarisering mogelijk maakt. Dit boek bevat de soms sterk uitgebreide teksten van de voordrachten die bij die gelegenheid gehouden werden. Zo kan men lezen hoe de weinige resten die ons van de veertiende-eeuwse Nederlandse liedkunst zijn bewaard, toch tot een samenhangend beeld kunnen worden samengevoegd. Hoe op het eerste gezicht schamele fragmenten ons inzicht kunnen geven in de wijze waarop middeleeuwse liedjesdichters te werk gingen. Hoe wereldlijke liederen onverwacht een geestelijke betekenis konden krijgen. Hoe in een liedboek een ander liedboek verscholen kan zitten. Hoe liederen troost en kracht konden geven in het aanschijn van de dood. Hoe Brabantse rederijkers liedjes gebruikten in hun straattoneel. Hoe het lied aan het eind van de zestiende eeuw het rederijkersrefrein naar de kroon ging steken, en zo al iets van de bloeiende liedcultuur van Hollands Gouden Eeuw zichtbaar wordt. En uiteraard kan men in dit boek ook vernemen hoe het samenstellen van het liederenrepertorium in zijn werk gaat, welke moeilijkheden daarbij opduiken en welke ontdekkingen er tot nu toe zijn gedaan. De kers op de taart is het verhaal van de vondst van de tot op heden vroegst bekende druk van het Geuzenliedboek, met de publicatie van de oudste volledige versie van het Wilhelmus. Birmingham was a village worth only one pound in the Domesday Survey, yet it rose to become the second city of the British Empire with a population that passed a million. Its growth began when Peter de Birmingham obtained a market charter in 1154 for his little settlement by an insignificant river, with all roads leading to its all-important market-place, the great triangular Bull Ring, with the parish church of St Martin's in the middle. In the succeeding centuries, Birmingham has been a product of market forces, as a market of agriculture, trade and metal work. By the 18th century, Birmingham overtook Coventry as the biggest town in Warwickshire and by 1800 it was 'the toy shop of Europe', having cornered the markets for gun-making, jewellery, buttons and buckles with a bewildering variety of specialist craftsmen and traders. The factory system had already begun and men like James Watt, Matthew Boulton, Joseph Priestley and William Murdock made Birmingham the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, selling their wares in vast quantities to the entire world. The middle of the 19th century saw Birmingham pioneering political reform, education and municipal government. In this first single-volume history of the city for half a century, Dr Upton looks at why Birmingham grew and what it has become. It has always been a place in which to experiment, from the steam engine to the factory in a garden; from the Bull Ring to Spaghetti Junction.
