Why do female genital cutting practices persist? How does circumcision affect the rights of girls in a culture where initiation forms the lynchpin of the ritual cycle at the core of defining gender, identity, and social and political status? In narratives of tragic drama's history the Judeo-Christian tradition is commonly portrayed as hostile to tragic drama both as an art form and sensibility or vision of life. With an emphasis on divine grace and justice, theorists argue, Jewish and Christian writers completely eschew anything approaching genuine tragedy. However, Jeff Jay demonstrates that in the earliest years of Christian literary activity Mark produced a narrative that is "tragic," for it strongly elicits several of tragedy's recurring motifs and moods, as well as a highly theatrical atmosphere and a poignant sense of inexorability that drives Jesus onwards to the fateful passion. Theorists who frame the history of tragedy in overly restrictive, even at times reductive, ways thus minimize tragedy's actual impact throughout the centuries and overlook its influence over several early Jewish writers and the author of the Gospel of Mark, all of whom wrote when tragedy was purportedly "dead."

In the early 1990s, Mark Grotjahn (born 1968) was living in San Francisco, and weary of the figurative painting he and his colleagues were doing. He found inspiration at Lloyds, a bar across the street from his studio, in their handmade signs advertising hot dogs and drink specials. Grotjahn started painting copies of the bar’s signs. Sensing that the difference between his copies and the originals was the audience, Grotjahn “figured in order to get my sign to be as good as their signs, I needed to get my sign in their store.” Thus began Grotjahn’s series of Sign Exchanges, where Grotjahn would paint copies of the signs of liquor stores, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and bodegas, and exchange his signs for the readymades on display.
