Tuttle Publishing Jeet Kune Do: The Arsenal of Self-Expression
Apply the combat science of Bruce Lee's revolutionary martial art! This martial arts manual describes his research into the how and why of Jeet Kune Do techniques. Bruce Lee wrote of "three stages of cultivation" that lie along the path to JKD mastery: The Stage of Innocence—this is the level of the absolute beginner. The Stage of Art—the student is immersed in the process of technical and physical training. The Stage of Artlessness—the stage of "highest art" in which the body is no longer hindered by the mind. As Bruce Lee would say, "It hits all by itself." To reach the final stage, the student must progress methodically through the Stage of Art—there are no shortcuts! Author Teri Tom guides you on this journey by revealing the science behind the moves in Jeet Kune Do repertoire. You'll learn how to protect yourself from injury, and maximize the effectiveness of the following core techniques and their variations: Straight Lead; Rear Cross; Hook; Uppercut; Straight Kick; Hook Kick; Side Kick; and Spinning Back Kick. You'll also learn about Bruce Lee's revolutionary approach to combat that takes advantage of human biomechanics; How to evade attacks, and use those evasive movements to launch counter-attacks; Natural ways to chain your moves into seamless combinations; The importance of developing mental and physical speed, footwork, cadence, good timing and judgment of distance; All techniques are traced to the original sources that inspired Bruce Lee.

Edinburgh University Press The Kingship of the Scots, 842-1292: Succession and Independence
First published in 2002, and here introduced by Dauvit Broun as a core text in Scottish medieval history, this classic work is considered one of the most invaluable critiques of kingship in Scotland during the nation's foundations. In the early years of the period a custom of succession within one royal lineage allowed the Gaelic kingdom to grow in authority and extent. The Norman Conquest of England altered the balance of power between the north and south, and the relationship between the two kingdoms, which had never been easy, became unstable. When Scotland became kingless in 1286, Edward I exploited the succession debate between Balliol and Bruce and set claim to overlordship of Scotland until Bruce's coronation fixed the right of succession by law for Scottish kingship. In a meticulous account of this period, Professor Duncan disentangles the power struggles during the 'Great Cause' between the Balliols and the Bruces, and of the actions, motives and decisive interventions of Edward I. The Kingship of the Scots is historical scholarship at its best - thoughtful, challenging, incisive and readable.

Rocky Nook The Essence of Photography: Seeing and Creativity
There is a lot more to photography than simply picking up a camera, pointing it toward something, and tripping the shutter. Achieving a great photograph requires thought and preparation, an understanding of the photographic process, and a firm grasp of how light and composition affect a photo. There must be personal involvement and personal expression. There must be experimentation, with the recognition that only a small percentage of experiments end successfully. In this book, best-selling author and world-renowned photographer and teacher Bruce Barnbaum explores these seldom-discussed issues by drawing upon his personal experiences and observations from more than 40 years of photographing and teaching. In addition to photographs, Bruce also uses painting, music, and writing, as well as the sciences and even business, to provide pertinent examples of creative thinking. These examples serve as stepping-stones that will lead you to your own heightened ability to see and be creative.

Muddy Boots Press Counting on Caribou
It was a Monday in February. Fifth-grader Bruce Turner squirmed in his seat. It was -20 degrees outside and a blizzard was burying streets and driving the snow against doorways. There had been no outdoor recess today. Bruce was bored. He wanted to be outside where he spent hours year-round, following animal tracks, observing snow geese during nesting season, finding tuttu antlers on the tundra, watching gulls and ravens soar overhead in the wind, and jigging for fish under the river ice. Bruce thought his village, Nuiqsut, was the best place in the world because he could do all the things he loved right here. But for now, Bruce was inside in the classroom getting ready for a visit by an elder, George Reilly, who would tell ancient stories called unipkaat about tuttut. A few minutes later, Shirley, Bruce’s teacher, welcomed George to the classroom. So begins the story of Bruce Bruce Turner, a fifth grader living in the Inuit village Nuiqsut, Alaska. His class is learning from village elders about the importance of Caribou in their culture and how though they are hunted. The animals must be respected if they are to return every year. Afterwards Bruce joins his father on a hunt, and they return with a caribou. Bruce's parents and aaka (grandmother) then show Bruce how the caribou is put to use in many ways, from food, to clothing, to using its sinew to develop sewing thread. Later that summer, Bruce joins local scientists on the annual caribou count, where he learns more about caribou behavior and migration.
