From the 16th century until well into the 18th century, the commedia dell'arte, a popular Italian type of improvised comic theatricals, cast its spell on a large and diverse audience. Here an exuberant joy of living was reflected in a portrayal of all aspects of life exaggerated with pomposity and humour. No medium was better suited than precious porcelain to immortalise the vivacious performance of the comedians on the stage, let alone surpass their exaltation: No other subject produced a similar symbiotic relationship between the downright expressionist sculptures executed by the porcelain modellers and their heightening with brilliant colours by the porcelain painters in their astounding depiction of the costumes. Still today, these luxurious creatures enthral the observer with the splendour of the Baroque, with that particular joie de vivre of a grand poque. Simplicity of material and solid craftsmanship have secured Danish silver jewellery its prominent role in the twentieth century. Until c. 1920 the chasing technique creates an intensive plasticity; the imagery is concrete and close to nature. The functionalistic period with its geometrical design leaves the narrative element behind, preparing for the abstract, sculptural forms of the 1950s. Smooth surfaces and lively reflections of light characterise the second half of the century. The New Schwandt Collection presents 170 highlights by seventy manufacturers and artists, all of which are illustrated. Besides providing a general aesthetic evaluation, the author closely observes artists and trends over twenty chapters. Appreciation of the works by the German artist couple Annelies and Fred Stelzig from Besigheim in the discipline of art made for architecture has been a long time coming. To mark the 100th anniversary of them both, the town of Besigheim has made this its task. For the large retrospective, a publication is launched that focuses on the incredible breadth of their production for the very first time. Waiting to be discovered alongside wall ceramics and carpets are works in wood, glass, and enamel. Numerous contributions by authoritative experts present the personal backgrounds of the couple, trace lines of development, and highlight the material specificities of their works. Over 300 illustrations additionally provide a lively impression of the couple’s ability to be versatile yet at the same time retain continuity during their long creative period, from the 1950s to their last work in 2006. Mari Ishikawa sees a parallel world off the beaten track of everyday living that she wants to make visible with her art. Such counter-worlds are discovered in photographs with long exposures, which are taken up in art jewellery. Together these pairings result in an overall picture that is almost mystical. Silver casts taken from nature are reborn as jewellery in combination with diamonds, pieces of charcoal, or paper. Thus Mari Ishikawa interrupts for a brief moment the flow of transience; a precious object is created that has been wrenched from the cycle of life and death to stand for itself and for the moment.

The Norwegian painter Bjørn Ransve (b. 1944) is one of the best-known contemporary Scandinavian artists. Very few painters indeed express themselves so brilliantly in two dimensions on a sheet of paper, thematically, technically and formally. His work is a dialogue that embraces art history enthusiastically, one that is deeply rooted in art history yet articulates something new and relevant to our times. While still a student, he began to do figurative drawings, switching to abstraction before ultimately returning to the figurative although he never returns to precisely where he left off. Instead he is continually blending in new elements he has seen and recognised along the way. Consequently, his most recent work represents a sophisticated synthesis of elements from worlds which at first might seem virtually irreconcilable. This volume presents Bjørn Ransve's drawings from all periods of his work. In themselves they provide a survey of his oeuvre as a whole since drawings always accompany his paintings and prints - not merely as sketches or designs but as autonomous works of art in their own right, with both familiar and unfamiliar motifs and techniques. Moreover, the book provides a comprehensive text on Bjørn Ransve's drawings, with the various groups of motifs studied in detail - when they appear and in what sequence and how they comment on each other - and fits them into the art historical context.

The representation of mysterious and fantastical figures, magical inscriptions and mythical beings that are half man and half beast are characteristic of the jewellery works and art objects created by Ulo Florack. With artistic mastery and an exuberant imagination, he tells stories using gold, silver, platinum and enamel. Ulo Florack is a multi-talented artist. It is almost impossible to categorise him. The question of whether he is more a painter or a jewellery artist cannot be answered definitively: both aspects cross-pollinate each other. His jewellery objects incorporate sculptural elements, whilst the choice and application of colours reveal the artist. His style is very distinctive and his objects use surprising ideological and intelligent imagery, which consciously hovers in the grey area between fantasy and reality. Text in English & German.

"Just Must" (in Estonian: "black and nothing but") was the theme of a jewellery exhibition in Tallinn in 2008, initiated and organised by the Estonian professor of jewellery Kadri Mälk. Fifty-eight artists from eighteen countries presented their own, widely varying, individual solutions to this subject as documented in the present book. The jewellery shown here is "black" on the one hand because dark or black materials such as jet, ebony or black diamonds have been used to make it. But it is also "black" in the figurative sense, for example in the way it deals with existential problems. Pieces such as Konrad Mehus' gold Valium-dispenser brooch, Tanel Veenre's "Guilty Conscience" or Francis Willemstijn's "The Widow" are overtly about human anxieties, cares and crises. A "Dark Painting" by Tore Svensson, on the other hand, is just what the title says: a black painting that can be worn as a brooch. The approaches taken by these artists to the "black" theme documents the avant-garde stance represented in their art works: jewellery is no longer viewed as merely decorative or a status symbol whose value depends solely on the material of which it is made. Instead it becomes a vehicle for expressing aesthetic ideas by means of unconventional materials and forms. For the internationally renowned artist and wood turner Ernst Gamperl, the dialogue with the exceptionally vital material of wood is a source of creative inspiration. He works it with a technique bordering on magic and embraces its natural drying-out process in the design of his pieces, giving rise to impressive, powerful forms. Ernst Gamperl’s most extensive work in wood to date was created from a 230-year-old oak tree uprooted by a hurricane. In an ongoing process lasting 10 years — the Lebensbaum (Tree of Life) project — he transformed this mighty tree into a unique ensemble of 97 differently formed vessels and objects, one of which was awarded the famous LOEWE Craft Prize in 2017. In his work, Reinhold Ziegler (born in 1965) explores the meaning of jewelry. Through the reduction of visual forms of expression, his works go beyond the purely decorative. His jewelry is not intended to reflect the individual personality of the wearer, but to link the individual with the universal. Gravity was the theme of an earlier series of works, the universal and all-embracing natural force that exists independently of the will of an individual. His current works are inspired by meteorites; originating in deep space, beyond the realm of human experience, they hold a fascination, capture the imagination and lend themselves to reflections about nearness and distance. Ziegler uses these heavenly bodies to express ideas about jewelry worn on the body, as a means to reflect light and distance. In Cosmic Debris, Halvor Nordby analyzes the meaning behind Ziegler's meteorite works, focusing on creative influences and interpretation. In an interesting dialogue with the artist, Andre Gali touches on the artistic journey towards finding meaning and expression and the forces that inspire these.
