Inescapably controversial, its very existence challenged by German intellectuals like Günter Grass, the Holocaust Memorial Berlin (or, as it's formally known, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) is now finished, some 16 years after it was first proposed. Architect Peter Eisenman's design, which filled a four-football-field-size parcel of land in the middle of Berlin with more than 2,700 concrete slabs, or stelae, was itself hotly debated, with some complaining that its abstractness, Eisenman's trademark, made it a monument that evoked no memories. As the debates give way to accounts of the experience of the space, the readers of this book, produced with Eisenman's cooperation, will be able to compare how successfully the architect's conception matches the reality. The intent is that the visitor, who finds himself winding his way through the concrete forest of varying heights, will be struck by how distant the busy city center seems, and how quiet and reflective--but not graveyard-like--the atmosphere is. Since the monument does not have a specific entrance or exit, visitors will be able to choose their own way in and out of the complex. Passing through the rows of slabs that lean almost imperceptibly and stand on seemingly unstable ground, visitors may experience a sensation of insecurity, and while that is mitigated in much of the site where the whole area is in view, at the center the surrounding slabs are 15 feet high. In this, one can sense the work of Richard Serra, who initally collaborated on the project but left when changes were called for. This volume offers a full picture of the process from conceptual and architectural drawings and digital plans to photographs of construction. It holds the narrative of a difficult task, turning "the place of no meaning," as Eisenman once referred to the site in the hopes of dispelling fears that he was trying to symbolize the deaths that took place during the Holocaust, into a confrontation with the past. The enormity and scale of the horror of the Holocaust is such that any attempt to represent it by traditional means is inevitably inadequate . . . Text in English & German. The central Mosque of the Turkish-Islamic Union in Köln-Ehrenfeld has given us one of the most vigorously discussed German building projects of the past 10 years. With this spectacular domed structure, Paul Böhm, the youngest son of Pritzker Prize-winner Gottfried Böhm and grandchild of Dominikus Böhm, has successfully introduced the Osman mosque typus into the modern age. The dome and minaret provide the Turkish / Islamic community with visual identification points. At the same time, this shell-construction structure is broken up into individual segments in a manner that opens it up to both the neighbourhood and the world. Containing conference halls, rooms for community use, a bazaar, a library and a museum, the complex is intended to convey to the surrounding area a message of retained ties to the historical country of origin coupled with acceptance and integration into the new homeland, and a willingness to engage in dialogue. Up to now the mosque represents the high point of the architectural career of Paul Böhm, who was born in 1959 and who is teaching at the Fachhochschule Köln. His work encompasses a multitude of exciting projects and realised buildings, including cultural buildings, university buildings, administration buildings and residential buildings. It is, perhaps, unsurprising that an architect who comes from a family of church builders should have added an impressive religious structure to uvre. St. Theodor in Köln-Vingst is a central-plan building that possesses a coherent atmosphere suited to contemplation whilst, at the same time, opening itself to a part of the city that suffers from social problems. Figures who have played a significant role in Paul Böhm's professional development include Tadao Ando, the master of velvet-smooth concrete, Oswald Mathias Ungers, the great lover of geometry, and Peter Zumthor, the essentialist of his generation. Like these three figures, the architects who Böhm worked with prior to founding his own firm in 2001, all espoused very different philosophies of architecture: Otto Steidle, Anton Schweighofer, Richard Meier . Paul Böhm does, of course, also owe a debt to the traditions of the family of architects that he comes from -- a tradition that he continues in his own individual way.

The eleventh volume of Coin Hoards is dedicated solely to hoards of Greek coins found in the Cimmerian Bosporus. The inventory contains records of 271 new hoards or re-evaluations of old ones, and provides an indispensable supplement to the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards and previous volumes of Coin Hoards. The volume includes many hitherto unrecorded hoards from the early 5th century BC to the 6th century AD. The majority of them were recently acquired by museums in Simferopol, Kerch, Tman, Phanagoria, Temryuk, Anapa, Krasnodar, Novorossiysk, Moscow and St Petersburg from the archaeological missions which had conducted wide-scale excavations in the Krasnodar region and the eastern Crimea. Among the significant recent finds are large hoards of Late Archaic silver coins and Late Bosporan staters from Phanagoria, as well as a group of purses from Mithradates VI's residence there, burnt in 63 BC; a Myrmicium hoard of Cyzicenes; big hoards of Bosporan gold staters from the Taman Peninsula; huge hoards of 3rd-century BC bronze coins (more than 21000 pieces) and coins of the Mithradatic period (15000 and 8000 coins) from the Asiatic Bosporus; and a group of hoards from Mithradates III's fortress in Parosta, a small Bosporan city, which met its end during the Roman-Bosporan War of AD 45-49, etc. Nine notes are devoted to brief publication of a group of the most significant new hoards, related mostly to Phanagoria and the Asiatic Bosporus. Huge Phanagorian hoards of the early 1st century BC are of special interest, containing coins of Euboea, Delos and Crete, the Pontus, western and southern Anatolia and the adjacent islands. These non-native coins are exceptional finds for the Cimmerian Bosporus, as well as in the numismatic profile of the northern Black Sea region as a whole. The distant coins form evidence for the voyages of Phanagorian merchantmen to the eastern Mediterranean - to Hierapytna and Patara. These studies significantly expand our understanding of the Bosporan coinage and Greek economy of this period. The volume is accompanied by 311 plates.

Son of the acclaimed aerial flyers Riggs and Riggs, he made his circus debut as a polar prince parading in a wagon pulled by a polar bear. Despite the importance of archives to the profession of history, there is very little written about actual encounters with them—about the effect that the researcher’s race, gender, or class may have on her experience within them or about the impact that archival surveillance, architecture, or bureaucracy might have on the histories that are ultimately written. Jan Le Witt and George Him were a comparative rarity, a graphic design duo; signing their work as 'Lewitt-Him' they brought an innovative use of colour, imaginative abstraction and symbolism to commercial design. Both Polish by birth, they arrived in London in 1937, sponsored by the Victoria and Albert Museum and Lund Humphries. They established their reputation for fine poster work in World War II, and for their exhibition work with their much loved Guinness Clock at the Festival of Britain. In Poland their illustrations for Lokomotywa helped make it a children's classic and they continued with book illustration throughout their partnership. Of very different temperaments and artistic interests the partnership lasted some twenty years, to January 1955, when Le Witt left to develop his career as an artist. Him continued his commitment to graphic design - illustration, exhibitions and general commercial work - most remarkable of which were his witty illustrations marrying Stephen Potter's texts for Schweppes - 'Schweppshire', one of the longest lasting advertisement campaigns.
