The first book to describe fully the foundations and development of St John's College Cambridge, highlighting the role its alumni have always played in the life of the nation. Within a generation of its foundation on the site of a decayed hospital at the behest of Lady Margaret Beaufort, England's queen mother, the College of St John the Evangelist had established itself as one of the kingdom's foremosteducational establishments: in the words of one notable contemporary, as 'an university within it selfe' indeed. And in the period thereafter - the years between 1511 and 1989, the period covered by the present volume - St John's has continued to provide its fair share of Prime Ministers and other politicians, bishops, Nobel laureates, artists, writers, and sporting heroes, as well as to irrigate the rich loam of the nation's history in all sorts of other unexpected ways and places. However, not until the organisation of the College's archives and records in the present generation has it been possible to describe in sufficient detail the full story of that progress and adequately to trace the College's development and achievements in recent centuries. The present history, the first since the early 1700s to provide a systematic and informed account of the subject, seeks to make good this historical defect. It is published as part of the celebration of the quincentenary of the College's foundation.

The need to attribute disputed utterance constantly arises, sometimes as a matter of legal urgency (contested 'confessions' or other documents), sometimes as the focus of fierce scholarly debate (was that new story just discovered really by D.H. Lawrence? QSUM finds not), sometimes as a popular diversion (whose words were on the 'Royal Tapes'?) It is in such situations that a scientific method of attribution - one which is objective - becomes desirable. The cumulative sum technique for authorship attribution (Cusum or QSUM, as the analytic procedure is now known) is just such a method. Invented in 1988 by Andre Q. Morton, long recognised as the foremost authority on the subject, QSUM is fully explained with copious illustrations. The technique works cross time and genre, and has already been used to solve several attribution problems. It has obvious uses in legal work, past and present (did Derek Bentley really make that confession? - again, QSUM finds not).

For a long time it has been the prevailing view that the books of the Greek Bible, the Septuagint, all originated in Alexandria, the famous city in Egypt, founded by Alexander the Great. However, in recent research it has become clear that this idea cannot be taken for granted for every translation unit. In this joint publication the provenance issue is dealt with regarding the following books, or set of books, in the Septuatint Version: Pentateuch, Isaiah, Proverbs, and Job. Both internal and external data are brought to the fore for making an attempt to determine the provenance of these books. Since a translation could have been made in Egypt by a Jewish scholar who came from Palestine, as was the case with the work of Ben Sira, attention is also paid to the provenance of the translators. This study aims at contributing to the research of books of the Greek Bible within the historical and cultural setting of their time.

This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference entitled "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800". The conference took place in Amsterdam in April 2004 and was organized by "Biblia sacra", a joint Dutch-Flemish research group. The clamor for Bibles in the vernacular flourished within lay renewal movements of the late 14th century, including groups like the Brethren and Sisters of the Common Life. In the early 16th century, humanists like Erasmus and Lefevre d'Etaples stimulated vernacular Bible reading. As the Protestant Reformation became established, lay Bibles were produced on a large scale. In reaction to this development, Catholic theologians issued 'orthodox' Bible translations in various vernaculars based on the Vulgate. In sum, from the 15th to the 18th century, editions from various confessional or ideological backgrounds appeared throughout Western Europe. Of course, the invention and spread of the printing press greatly enhanced the distribution of these editions. The essays collected in this volume approach "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800" from various perspectives, including the history of books, art history and church history.

At a difficult and sad time in his family life, A. B. Guthrie, Jr., turned for surcease to reading western and whodunit novels. In his autobiography, The Blue Hen's Chick (also a Bison Book), he touches on that moment when he realized he could write as well as or better than the published plot-spinners. Global 1968 is a unique study of the similarities and differences in the 1968 cultural revolutions in Europe and Latin America. The late 1960s was a time of revolutionary ferment throughout the world. Yet so much was in flux during these years that it is often difficult to make sense of the period. In this volume, distinguished historians, filmmakers, musicologists, literary scholars, and novelists address this challenge by exploring a specific issue—the extent to which the period that we associate with the year 1968 constituted a cultural revolution. They approach this topic by comparing the different manifestations of this transformational era in Europe and Latin America. The contributors show in vivid detail how new social mores, innovative forms of artistic expression, and cultural, religious, and political resistance were debated and tested on both sides of the Atlantic. In some cases, the desire to confront traditional beliefs and conventions had been percolating under the surface for years. Yet they also find that the impulse to overturn the status quo was fueled by the interplay of a host of factors that converged at the end of the 1960s and accelerated the transition from one generation to the next. These factors included new thinking about education and work, dramatic changes in the self-presentation of the Roman Catholic Church, government repression in both the Soviet Bloc and Latin America, and universal disillusionment with the United States.
