University of Texas Press Who Guards the Guardians and How: Democratic Civil-Military Relations
The continued spread of democracy into the twenty-first century has seen two-thirds of the almost two hundred independent countries of the world adopting this model. In these newer democracies, one of the biggest challenges has been to establish the proper balance between the civilian and military sectors. A fundamental question of power must be addressed—who guards the guardians and how?In this volume of essays, contributors associated with the Center for Civil-Military Relations in Monterey, California, offer firsthand observations about civil-military relations in a broad range of regions including Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Despite diversity among the consolidating democracies of the world, their civil-military problems and solutions are similar—soldiers and statesmen must achieve a deeper understanding of one another, and be motivated to interact in a mutually beneficial way. The unifying theme of this collection is the creation and development of the institutions whereby democratically elected civilians achieve and exercise power over those who hold a monopoly on the use of force within a society, while ensuring that the state has sufficient and qualified armed forces to defend itself against internal and external aggressors. Although these essays address a wide variety of institutions and situations, they each stress a necessity for balance between democratic civilian control and military effectiveness.

Columbia University Press Human Ecology of Beringia
Twenty-five thousand years ago, sea level fell more than 400 feet below its present position as a consequence of the growth of immense ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere. A dry plain stretching 1,000 miles from the Arctic Ocean to the Aleutians became exposed between northeast Asia and Alaska, and across that plain, most likely, walked the first people of the New World. This book describes what is known about these people and the now partly submerged land, named Beringia, which they settled during the final millennia of the Ice Age. Humans first occupied Beringia during a twilight period when rising sea levels had not yet caught up with warming climates. Although the land bridge between northeast Asia and Alaska was still present, warmer and wetter climates were rapidly transforming the Beringian steppe into shrub tundra. This volume synthesizes current research-some previously unpublished-on the archaeological sites and rapidly changing climates and biota of the period, suggesting that the absence of woody shrubs to help fire bone fuel may have been the barrier to earlier settlement, and that from the outset the Beringians developed a postglacial economy similar to that of later northern interior peoples. The book opens with a review of current research and the major problems and debates regarding the environment and archaeology of Beringia. It then describes Beringian environments and the controversies surrounding their interpretation; traces the evolving adaptations of early humans to the cold environments of northern Eurasia, which set the stage for the settlement of Beringia; and provides a detailed account of the archaeological record in three chapters, each of which is focused on a specific slice of time between 15,000 and 11,500 years ago. In conclusion, the authors present an interpretive summary of the human ecology of Beringia and discuss its relationship to the wider problem of the peopling of the New World.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Richard Hooker and Reformed Orthodoxy
For over forty years now there has been a steady stream of interest in Richard Hooker. This renaissance in Hooker Studies began with the publication of the Folger Library Edition of the Works of Richard Hooker. With this renaissance has come a growing recognition that it is anachronistic to classify Hooker simply as an Anglican thinker, but as yet, no generally agreed-upon alternative label, or context for his thought, has replaced this older conception; in particular, the question of Hooker's Reformed identity remains hotly contested. Given the relatively limited engagement of Hooker scholarship with other branches of Reformation and early modern scholarship to date, there is a growing recognition that Hooker must be evaluated not only against the context of English puritanism and conformism but also in light of his broad international Reformed context. At the same time, it has become clear that, if this is so, scholars of continental Reformed orthodoxy must take stock of Hooker's work as one of the landmark theological achievements of the era. This volume aims to facilitate this long-needed conversation, bringing together a wide range of scholars to consider Richard Hooker's theology within the full context of late 16th- and early 17th-century Reformed orthodoxy, both in England and on the Continent. The essays seek to bring Hooker into conversation not merely with contemporaries familiar to Hooker scholarship, such as William Perkins, but also with such contemporaries as Jerome Zanchi and Franciscus Junius, predecessors such as Heinrich Bullinger, and successors such as John Davenant, John Owen, and Hugo Grotius. In considering how these successors of Hooker identified themselves in relation to his theology, these essays will also shed light on how Hooker was perceived within 17th-century Reformed circles. The theological topics touched on in the course of these essays include such central issues as the doctrine of Scripture, predestination, Christology, soteriology, the sacraments, and law. It is hoped that these essays will continue to stimulate further research on these important questions among a wide community of scholars.

PublicAffairs,U.S. More Human
People feel angry and let down by their leaders, as well as by the institutions that dominate their lives: political parties, government bureaucracy, and corporations. Yet the cause of this malaise, according to political-advisor-turned-tech-CEO Steve Hilton, is not being addressed by politicians on the left or the right. Hilton argues that much of our daily experience-from the food we eat, to the governments we elect, to the economy on which our wealth depends, to the way we care for our health and well-being-has become too big, too bureaucratic, and too distant from the human scale. More Human sets out a radical manifesto for change, aimed at the root causes of our problems rather than just the symptoms. Whether it's using the latest advances in neuroscience to inform the fight against poverty and inequality, or applying lessons from America's most radical schools to transform our children's education, this book is an agenda for rethinking and redesigning the outdated systems and structures of our politics, government, economy, and society to make them more suited to the way we want to live our lives today. To make them more human.

Skyhorse Publishing Men's Complete Health Guide: Expert Answers to the Questions You Don't Always Ask
"This book is a great asset to all men who need to make their own health a priority." --Joe Gibbs, NFL Hall of Fame coach and owner of 4x NASCAR champion Joe Gibbs Racing Everything you need to know about men’s health in one handy package—updated, revised, and expanded. The authors’ first edition (2018) concentrated on the male pelvis and health concerns “down there.” Urologists Neil Baum and Scott Miller described the male pelvic region and its complex functions before moving on to a comprehensive list of related medical concerns, including pelvic pain, prostate problems, urinary leakage, urinary tract infections, testosterone deficiency, STDs, prostate cancer, and questions about infertility and sexual dysfunction. Both authors approached these very personal and sensitive topics with straightforward, reader-friendly language, using case examples, illustrations, research, and occasional humor to explain the potential causes and cures for each medical challenge. Five years later, the authorship has been doubled to include one more urologist, David Mobley, and a Doctor of Pharmacy, Mindi Miller. With this expanded team of experts, the goal is to provide men with health information—not only from prostate to penis—but from head to toe. Nine totally new chapters address a wide range of topics that altogether equip the reader with key information to assess and improve his mental, physical, and emotional health. The authors even provide step-by-step processes to use when selecting a doctor or surgeon, and what signs might indicate that a doctor’s visit is a must. Men’s Complete Health Guide means that men no longer need to suffer in silence or dwell in denial. This valuable resource enables every man to become his own health advocate, more likely to discuss body concerns with family or friends, and more open to seeking a doctor’s advice for remedy.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Obesity: Impact on Cardiovascular Disease
Obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent in a worldwide context, and has been recognised as a major contributing factor in heart disease. This volume was authored by the participants in a 1998 AHA sponsored conference on the impact of obesity on cardiovascular disease. The three main sections of the book set out to evaluate current research pertaining to causation and cardiovascular sequela of obesity. Part I defines obesity, exploring its epidemiology, its genetic and non-genetic influences and its contribution to the problem of cardiovascular disease. Special attention is given to the primary prevention of obesity as a means of avoiding specific sequelae as well as the difficulties experienced by those who try to lose weight. Part II deals with the relatively new and much heralded discovery of obesity related genes the current state of diet drugs and valvular heart disease, and the interaction of obesity and metabolism, hormonal regulation and various other biological systems. Recent basic advances in the biological understanding of obesity are introduced. Part III suggests the most accurate ways of assessing BMI, of defining helpful dietary strategies and of managing the issues involved in the implementation of physical activity and pharmacological intervention as a means to decrease and maintain weight. Quality of life, economic issues and managed care settings are also discussed.

The Catholic University of America Press The Quotable Saint Jerome
Among the illustrious writers of the early Church, Saint Jerome (345-420) had a way with words few could equal. To honor the 1600th anniversary of the death of this patron saint of librarians and Scripture scholars, the Catholic University of America Press is releasing The Quotable Jerome, a well-organized collection of memorable wisdom from this early witness to Catholic truth. While Jerome is known for acerbic wits, editor Justin McClain shows that much of the time, Jerome's writings are instructive and even inspiring. University of Toronto Press Canada and the Third World: Overlapping Histories
Even though they are aware of the Third World in relation to their daily lives, most Canadians know little about the historical foundations and complex nature of their country's entanglements with non-Western societies. Canada and the Third World provides a long overdue introduction to Canada's historical relationship with the Third World. The book critically explores this relationship by asking four central questions: how can we understand the historical roots of Canada's relations with the Third World? How have Canadians, individuals and institutions alike, practiced and imagined development? How can we integrate Canada into global histories of empire, decolonization, and development? And how should we understand the relationship between issues such as poverty, racism, gender equality, and community development in the First and Third World alike?

Princeton University Press Political Turbulence: How Social Media Shape Collective Action
As people spend increasing proportions of their daily lives using social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, they are being invited to support myriad political causes by sharing, liking, endorsing, or downloading. Chain reactions caused by these tiny acts of participation form a growing part of collective action today, from neighborhood campaigns to global political movements. Political Turbulence reveals that, in fact, most attempts at collective action online do not succeed, but some give rise to huge mobilizations--even revolutions. Drawing on large-scale data generated from the Internet and real-world events, this book shows how mobilizations that succeed are unpredictable, unstable, and often unsustainable. To better understand this unruly new force in the political world, the authors use experiments that test how social media influence citizens deciding whether or not to participate. They show how different personality types react to social influences and identify which types of people are willing to participate at an early stage in a mobilization when there are few supporters or signals of viability. The authors argue that pluralism is the model of democracy that is emerging in the social media age--not the ordered, organized vision of early pluralists, but a chaotic, turbulent form of politics. This book demonstrates how data science and experimentation with social data can provide a methodological toolkit for understanding, shaping, and perhaps even predicting the outcomes of this democratic turbulence.
