Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Knowledge Transfer and Technology Diffusion
This important book is about the origins and diffusion of innovation, in theory and in practice. The practice draws on a variety of industries, from electronics to eyewear, from furniture to mechatronics, in a range of economies including Europe, the USA and China. The eminent contributors investigate how the latest technologies diffuse through the economy, helping to reinvigorate seemingly old and stagnant industries in the process. Examples drawn from Asia and Europe show how countries like China and India are increasingly able to catchup with, or even surpass, industrialized nations in Europe and North America, in some cases by becoming technological pioneers. The book also examines the effects of new information and communications technologies on regional economies, especially in Western Europe. The themes and findings are summarized and evaluated in an extensive introductory chapter. Scholars of innovation from a variety of disciplines, including management, economics, and human resources will find this study insightful. Postgraduate students in industrial studies, industrial dynamics and industrial development, including both advanced and industrialising countries, will also find much of interest to them in this timely book.

University of Nebraska Press John Wayne: American
"John Wayne remains a constant in American popular culture. Middle America grew up with him in the late 1920s and 1930s, went to war with him in the 1940s, matured with him in the 1950s, and kept the faith with him in the 1960s and 1970s. . . . In his person and in the persona he so carefully constructed, middle America saw itself, its past, and its future. John Wayne was his country’s alter ego." Thus begins John Wayne: American, a biography bursting with vitality and revealing the changing scene in Hollywood and America from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War. During a long movie career, John Wayne defined the role of the cowboy and soldier, the gruff man of decency, the hero who prevailed when the chips were down. But who was he, really? Here is the first substantive, serious view of a contradictory private and public figure.

The University of Chicago Press Hymns / Inni
This newest volume in the "Works of Giuseppe Verdi" series comprises his only two surviving secular choral works: "Inno popolare", or "Hymn of the People", for unaccompanied male chorus, and "Inno delle nazioni", or "Hymn of the Nations", for tenor solo, chorus, and orchestra. Verdi wrote the brief "Inno popolare" in 1848 at the behest of the Italian philosopher and patriot Giuseppe Mazzini, hoping that it would become an anthem for Italy. He wrote no more independent patriotic pieces until he was asked in 1861 to represent his country with a patriotic composition at a musical jubilee during London's International Exhibition of 1862. The resulting piece was "Inno delle nazioni", the critical edition of which is based on Verdi's autograph score, preserved at the British Library. Other important sources include the composer's musical sketches, recently discovered in the Verdi family villa, and the performing parts Toscanini used for a BBC broadcast in 1943.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks
Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks A detailed view on the effects of seismic activity on tank structures As the use of above-ground and underground storage tanks (ASTs and USTs) continues to grow—with approximately 545,000 in the USA alone—the greatest threat to ASTs and USTs is earthquakes, causing the contamination of groundwater, a vital source of drinking water throughout the world. These tanks suffer a great deal of strain during an earthquake, as a complicated pattern of stress affects them, such that poorly designed tanks have leaked, buckled, or even collapsed during seismic events. Furthermore, in oil and gas industrial plants, the risk of damage is even more critical due to the effects of explosion, collapse, and air or soil contamination by chemical fluid spillages. Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks provides the first in-depth discussion of the principles and applications of shell structure design and earthquake engineering analyses focused on tank structures, and it explains how these methodologies can help prevent the destruction of ASTs and USTs during earthquakes. Providing a thorough examination of the design, analysis, and performance of steel, reinforced concrete, and precast tanks, this book takes a look at tanks that are above-ground, underground, or elevated, anchored and unanchored, and rigid or flexible, and evaluates the efficacy of each method during times of seismic shaking—and it does so without getting bogged down in impenetrable mathematics and theory. Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks readers will also find: A global approach to the best analytical and practical solutions available in each region: discussion of the latest US codes and standards from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ACSE 7), the American Concrete Institute (ACI 350,3, 371.R), the American Water Works Association (AWWA D100, D110, D115), and the American Petroleum Institute (API 650) an overview of the European codes and standards, including Eurocode 8-4 and CEN-EN 14015 Hundreds of step-by-step equations, accompanied by illustrations Photographs illustrating real-world damage to tanks caused by seismic events Perfect for practising structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and engineers of all kinds who are responsible for the design, analysis, and performance of tanks and their foundations—as well as students studying engineering—Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks is a landmark text, the first work of its kind to deal with the seismic engineering performance of all types of storage tanks.

Duke University Press Urban Climate Insurgency
According to the United Nations, cities are responsible for up to 75 percent of contemporary carbon emissions, with transport and buildings being among the largest contributors. The worsening climate emergency is driving the proliferation and increasing political prominence of urban insurgencies around the world, particularly among the peoples of the global South. Contributors to this special issue explore the rise of grassroots movements that advocate for radical climate change politics and justice in cities affected by the intensifying climate emergency. Topics include pro-poor politics in northern Jakarta and Bangalore, the popular response to a garbage crisis in Naples, community-led reforestation efforts in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and efforts to bridge antiracist and environmentalist struggles in California. Noting that environmental policy is no longer the exclusive province of national governments, international agreements, and panels of experts, the contributors seek to determine how urban insurgent movements differ from those unfolding at other scales. Rowman & Littlefield The Bucs!: The Story of the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Bucs is the story of a baseball club. The word “story” is purposely used in lieu of the more common designation “history.” A baseball club rarely has a history in the strictest sense of the word. Instead, the record of its formation and growth more closely resembles a biography. Each club mirrors the character of those who nurtured its development and wore its uniforms. The Pittsburgh ball club is no exception. Each generation of Pirate fans has been blessed with its own pantheon of god-like heroes: Honus Wagner, Pie Traynor, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski, Roberto Clemente, and Wille Stargell. The Bucs shows how Pittsburgh lost the ʼ27 World Series to the Yankees in batting practice. It recalls the miracle of 1960 when Mazeroski electrified the nation with his Series-winning home run. The Bucs is a must for any baseball enthusiast.
