It is written by the author of the treatment manual: Positive Practice: A Step by Step Guide to Family Therapy which was published in 1995. The present volume aims to answer a number of questions which arose from the first book, including the way in which Positive Practice evolved, the clinical context within which the practice occurred, and the ideas that informed the approach. This book deals with the period of Guatemalan history between the U.S.-backed overthrow of the Arbenz regime in 1954 and the establishment of the civil-military national-security state in 1970. Specifically, it treats the regime of General Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes, the one-time functionary of the dictator, Jorge Ubico (1931-1944), who sought to install a more open, democratic political system in Guatemala during the period from 1957 to 1963. His experiment in democratic pluralism, which came to an end when he was overthrown by the military in 1963, opened the door to the military-dominated regimes which followed. Misunderstood Caudillo outlines the variety of reasons why this flawed experiment in democracy ultimately failed. This is explained by the over-politicization of a wide spectrum of political "power contenders" which Ydigoras allowed to operate within the restricted, but highly charged environment of the Central American city-state.

This book is about religious change. More particularly it is about the changes brought about when Christianity was introduced to a remote tribal group in the highlands of what is now Irian Jaya, Indonesia. These people who are members of a tribal group that has become known as the Western Dani, entered into a process, through their contact with missionaries, that has been the shared experience of hundreds of tribal groups for the past two thousand years. This process has been variously labelled as the "indigenizing of Christianity," the "inculturation of Christianity,^D> " or as the "contextualizing of Christianity." This book uses the term vernacular Christianity in order to emphasize the anthropological perspective that characterizes the study, and the socio-cultural processes that transpire when two belief systems come in contact. Through the use of ethnographical methodology, this study seeks to ascertain as accurately as possible the Dani perspective on what they do and what they believe in their religious perspectives, commonly spoken of as an emic perspective. It records both their pre-Christian beliefs, as well as their own vernacular form of Christianity. It is a study that also seeks to represent the position of the missionaries, often citing their own records at length. Chapter topics include detailed studies of Dani cosmology, myths, religious rituals, sacred paraphernalia, religious specialists, and the problem of cargoism in socio-religious change. Until now, the life story of Albert Williamson Goldsmid, an extraordinary Victorian figure, has been known to comparatively few. This book is a new theoretical model of criminal dangerousness with special reference to the prediction of violence. The model proposes that criminal violence evolves from the combination of deviant social values that limit the constraints upon lawful behavior (antisociality) and cognitive deficits that interfere with effective planning of crimes and with the conduct of criminal transactions with the victims (impaired cognition). A program of research is used to consider the validity of the criminal dangerousness model as well as empirical tests of the theory's assumptions and the issues raised. Extensive validity evidence is presented. Assumptions tested include further refinement of specific cognitive deficits, and issues addressed involve the relevance of race, gender, and mental disorder to the dangerousness model.

The masked theater of Thailand (Khon) is a classical performance art that ritually creates a realm of illusion by generating an ambiguous tension among its physical elements of self, mask and gesture, space and silence. Pulling the Siamese Dragon presents Khon as an ideal model of performance as a structured and expressive human activity, and suggests that performance, as a genre of aesthetic and religious import, may be further regarded as a significant theological agenda for Christian ritual praxis. This approach to performance has profound implications for the Western theological consciousness which generally regards tension and ambiguity as duplicates that require resolution and synthesis. Written in 1816/17, the topic of the automaton is also a question of what is real and what is merely perceived to be real, which is at the root of the uncanny, as described by Freud, among others. Blurring the lines between mechanical and human is a very contemporary issue with virtual assistants and AI’s whose voices are indistinguishable from humans. This narrative is over 200 years old still and has many interesting and prescient questions at its core that modern audiences will find interesting and engaging.

This book counteracts the commonly accepted belief that the expressionless stereotypical human faces in prehistoric and ancient art are the result of a consciously chosen style. Brener introduces evidence from psychology, evolutionary biology and other disciplines that suggest that something more significant may be involved. Scientists have emphasized the innate, genetically based nature of our fascination with the human face and its almost limitless expressive capacity, all of which is represented in the art of the last six centuries. But little attention has been paid to the anomaly of the vacuous expressions of earlier facial representations. Brener attributes this change to a change in the functioning of the human brain, as well as the role of cultural factors. It is the evolution of both genes and culture that has resulted in a marked increase in the human ability to create and interpret facial expressions. The result of this has impacted human behavior. It has increased human empathy leading to the abolition of human sacrifice, and the beginnings of courtly love in the late 11th century. More complex and subtle facial expression, and the ability to respond to it on an emotional level, has played a major role in both of these historic behavior changes. This book deals with the legal status of the three islands of Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tumbs. In December 1971, the sixty-seven years of the Anglo-Iranian dispute over the islands transformed itself into Irano-UAE conflict—a conflict which Iran considers a colonial legacy inherited by the United Arab Emirates. The alliance of convenience between Iran and Britain cemented under Shah Abbas in the early seventeenth century had faded away by the mid-eighteenth century, after the collapse of the Safavid Dynasty. During the nineteenth century, the Anglo-Iranian relationship evolved into mutual distrust and resentment. The matter is complex, particulary because material facts and evidence, relating to a very short span of time in the nineteenth century, are ambiguous and debatable. British Colonial interests and past interventions have marred the evidence. Hence, clarification of the material facts and the choice of applicable law form the crux of the present study. This is a multi-disciplinary study, dealing with geography, history, economics, politics, international relations and law.

This book examines two prominent Irish authors, Neil Jordan and John McGahern. Jordan is famous for his films, most notably The Crying Game, and this work studies both his films and his fiction. McGahern is the most respected, lauded Irish novelist since Joyce; a writer who broke the mold of Anglo-Irish writing after it settled into a conservative rut in the 1950s. The works of Jordan and McGahern, involved with seemingly minor issues of householding and parenting within the patriarchal family, reveal male and female characters to be representations of a masculine past and feminine present competing for dominance in the modern state. The author argues that in Jordan's and McGahern's works the modern state is described as stereotypically feminine, and that women's individual agency is directed to the deliberate blurring of gender difference upon which patriarchy depends. The scope of the study reported in this book entails understanding the constraints and providing potential diagnostics to Africa’s leather sector, which is otherwise globally, one of the most lucrative agro-based industries in the world, estimated at over US$ 130Billion. One of the principle core thematic aspects of the leather sector is, characteristically, its long value chain with multiple socio-economic dimensions. These entail employability, creation of wealth, gender parity and rural development. Thusly, in an effort to stimulate scholarly discussion, the study argues that preemptively, the problems facing the leather value chain stratums are high losses, low value addition initiatives and unexplored opportunities that are synonymous with the Africa’s leather industry. Indeed, the results of the research conceptualized opportunity management as a critical panacea towards value addition strategy for the leather sector in developing countries. In dealing with this concept, the book evaluated the various value chains phases and identified nine specific issues and variables drawn between value addition and the main leather strata. With this background, the study posed a main question and four sub questions to closely expound on related hypotheses and in lieu pursue four thematic aspects: trade, productivity, competitiveness, and innovation covered in twelve chapters of the book. Conclusively, the book manages to successfully conceptualize as a novelty that opportunity management is integral towards developing a leather value addition strategy for the developing countries with particular emphasis to Africa.
