Gareth Jones (1905-1934), the young Welsh investigative journalist, is revered in Ukraine as a national hero and is now rightly recognised as the first reporter to reveal the horror of the Holodomor, the Soviet Government-induced famine of the early 1930s, which killed millions of Ukrainians. Gareth Jones - Eyewitness to the Holodomor is a meticulous study of the efforts made by the the Aberystwyth and Cambridge-educated journalist, a fluent Russian-speaker, to investigate the Soviet Government’s denials, that its Five Year Plan had led to mass starvation, by visiting Ukraine in 1933 and reporting what he saw and witnessed: `I walked along through villages and twelve collective farms. Everywhere was the cry, “There is no bread. We are dying”’. Determined to alert the world to the suffering in Ukraine and to expose Stalin’s policies and prejudices towards the Ukrainian people, Jones published numerous articles in the UK (The Times, Daily Express and Western Mail) and the USA (New York Evening News and Chicago Daily News) with headlines such as `Famine Grips Russia. Millions Dying’, but soon saw his credibility and integrity attacked and denigrated by Soviet sympathizers, most famously by Moscow-based Walter Duranty of the New York Times. Gareth Jones was killed by bandits the following year, on the eve of his 30th birthday, whilst travelling in Japanese-controlled China. There remain strong suspicions that Jones’ murder was arranged by the Soviets in revenge for his eyewitness reporting which brought global attention to the Holodomor.

They will remember its anarchic and confrontational nature. and its rejection of the traditional comedy aesthetic. Yet, few will remember that the scene and the physical spaces, the clubs, were collectively referred to as ‘alternative cabaret’. Ray Campbell’s book represents the first cultural studies investigation of the alternative cabaret scene of the 1980s and early 1990s. Campbell unearths the events before alternative cabaret and charts its rise throughout the 1980s and eventual transformation into the stand-up comedy industry we recognize today. To do this, Campbell makes use of autoethnography, ethnography and archive study to uncover alternative cabaret’s past and interrogate its many claims. The book departs from the position of other works on the period because it firmly situates alternative cabaret within the post-punk countercultural milieu of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Campbell also discusses how political theatre groups like CAST and movements like Rock Against Racism helped to shape the aesthetic and the discourses of the movement.

It consciously, creatively, and collectively sought to build something new—to generate and promote ideas, arguments, and frameworks that would disrupt mainstream myths and narratives about nuclear weapons, institute new international norms and laws, and ultimately set in place key mechanisms for the abolition of the atomic bomb.I was directly involved in this work as an activist with one of the partner organizations of ICAN. I represented my organization, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), on ICAN’s International Steering Group. The steering group is the policy-making body of ICAN, a group of ten activist organizations from around the world that works with ICAN’s staff team to lead the campaign. As a genderqueer feminist peace activist, I tried to promote a feminist vision of both process and product in my work with ICAN—to bring theories and experiences of feminist and queer activists to the task of banning nuclear weapons.
