Peeters Publishers Mythe Et Roman En Egypte Ancienne: Les Aventures D'Horus Et Seth Dans Le Papyrus Chester Beatty I

Peeters Publishers Jesus, with Style: Luke's Literary and Theological Genius
The essays of this book show that we do not have to choose between Luke as a theologian and Luke as a writer, between a Greek and a Jewish Luke, between a conservative Luke and an innovative and creative one, between the Luke of the Gospel and the Luke of Acts. Luke’s literary qualities are universally recognized, from the sophistication of his composition and writing, to the way he combines allusions to the Scriptures of Israel and to Hellenistic culture. In both his works, Marc Rastoin argues, Luke shows his knowledge of the historiography of his time, all the while never ceasing to be a theologian. Acts, often considered to be simply an interesting account of the early church, has just as much theological value as the Gospel. It was a key ecclesiological, and thus pneumatological, decision for Luke to have written such a narrative in two parts of equal weight.

Peeters Publishers Sancti viri, ut audio: Theologies, Rhetorics, and Receptions of the Pelagian Controversy Reappraised
In consequence of a paradigm shift in the study of ancient Christian doctrinal controversies that was pioneered by Walter Bauer and elaborated by Alain Le Boulluec, most contemporary scholars of ancient Christianity have agreed that the construction of orthodoxy was accompanied by and indeed entailed the definition as heretical of positions that had been regarded as apostolic, and hence orthodox, by prior generations of Christians. This scholarly realisation has resulted in the historiographical deconstruction of ancient heresiological categories such as Gnosticism, Marcionism, and Arianism. As for Pelagianism – to the degree that we can speak of a unified doctrine or movement – scholars have argued that it developed into a coherent system of thought only in the minds of Augustine or Jerome. The deconstruction of Pelagianism as a heresiological category has led some scholars to question the validity of Pelagianism as a historiographical construct – here it will suffice to mention Ali Bonner’s recent and not uncontested work, The Myth of Pelagianism. So how, then, did Christian authors who were considered pious and holy in their own day become the arch-heretics of Western Christianity? To answer this question, the present volume re-examines various facets of the so-called Pelagian controversy. In critical dialogue with standard works, specialists review the controversy’s possible sources and origins; the diverse theological positions concerning Christ, grace, and (original) sin; the rhetorical and heresiological strategies employed and their long after-effects; as well as matters of textual and theological afterlife. In this way, the volume reappraises the controversy’s myriad theology, rhetoric, and reception.

Peeters Publishers Nithard, 'Histories'
Nithard, a layman and soldier, offers an important eyewitness account of the Carolingian civil war between Charlemagne’s grandsons. This work also includes an early example of the languages that would become French and German. Nithard’s Histories open with Charlemagne’s death in 814, cover the reign of Louis the Pious and the rebellions against him, and then give details about the conflict between Louis’s sons Lothar, Louis the German, and Charles the Bald during 840–842. This volume contains a new edition and English translation of the Histories. The edition utilizes all surviving manuscripts of the text as well as Pithou’s sixteenth-century edition, which preserves variants from an additional, now-lost manuscript. The critical apparatus presents variants found in all extant manuscripts and editions, providing a full view of the textual history that will interest specialists of Carolingian history and Latin historiography. The volume also offers a comprehensive look at this pivotal period of history that is accessible for the wider public. In addition to surveying the manuscript tradition and describing the manuscripts and editions, the introduction draws on the latest scholarship and discusses Nithard’s life, work, perspective, and style. The notes to the translation give further insight into Nithard’s work and contextualize his view with references to other contemporary historical sources. The volume also includes a glossary of people and places mentioned in the text and a map of those places.

Peeters Publishers Hermeneutik des Lebens: Meister Eckharts exegetisches Programm
Meister Eckhart is rightly considered one of the most speculative medieval thinkers. His extensive use of philosophical sources is balanced, however, by an equally thorough biblical foundation of his theology. While staunchly upholding the perfect concordance between natural reason and revelation, Eckhart never proclaims the ‘sublation’ of Sacred Scripture into the philosophical concept but develops his theological approach from within the biblical text in its ineliminable positivity. At the same time, he does not consider the Bible as a radically different source of knowledge whose principles are at odds with the natural world and human reality. Eckhart’s philosophical and theological speculation goes hand in hand with a hermeneutical effort that seeks to decipher the inexhaustible richness of meaning of both the biblical text and human existence and to point out their profound interconnectedness. Ultimately, his exegesis presents itself as a hermeneutics of life, where Sacred Scripture and concrete lived experience mutually elucidate each other in order to reveal the whole of reality as a fabric of meaning. The articles contained in this volume were initially presented at a colloquium on 18-19 October 2016, in Vienna. The different contributions examine Eckhart’s hermeneutical approach from a wide range of perspectives, including philosophy, theology, history, philology, exegesis, and spiritual practice.

Peeters Publishers Defining Christ: The Church of the East and Nascent Islam
Defining Christ describes the theological developments of the Church of the East in the Persian Empire in the seventh century, when Arab groupings were seizing power. This Church defined and emphasized the difference between the divine and human nature of Christ in such a way that it had already come in strong conflict with other Christian denominations. Now, it also had to deal with new rulers who recognized Christ as a unique human being, but rejected the belief in his divinity. The book investigates to what extent the leaders of this Church adapted their statements concerning Christ to the rapidly changing circumstances and views. Most attention is thereby given to the 106 letters of Isho’yahb III, written between about 625 and 659. These letters shed an interesting light on this period and for a better understanding they are set in the context of wider theological and political developments.

Peeters Publishers "I am myn owene woman, wel at ese": In Memory of Margaret Jennings
This booklet is devoted to the memory of Margaret Jennings (1942–2016), a distinguished medievalist who devoted much of her scholarly work to the fourteenth-century Benedictine Ranulph Higden and his writings. The booklet offers reminiscences by some of Professor Jennings’s closest friends and colleagues, including her husband, Francis P. Kilcoyne. The brief essays reveal a remarkable woman, who was not only a fine scholar, but poured her soul into many activities benefiting other people, whether these were the generations of students she joyfully taught at St. Joseph’s College or parolees in Brooklyn whom she helped get their lives together. Included in this booklet, as well, is a reprint of one of Professor Jennings’s most intriguing articles, in which she reconstructs the scandalous conditions that prevailed at St. Werburgh’s Abbey in the fourteenth century. Her complete bibliography rounds off this commemorative publication.

Peeters Publishers Tertullian's Preface to Marcion's Gospel
Over the past few years, scholarship has taken a new interest in the study of Marcion and particularly in his Gospel. Most recently several attempts have been made at reconstructing this Gospel, and its role in the Synoptic question is being discussed. One of the most detailed and crucial information that we possess derives from Tertullian’s preface to Marcion’s Gospel and his Antitheses with which Marcion himself introduced and defended his Gospel against earlier misuses. The present monograph first looks at Tertullian’s ways of prefacing his works to then move to his preface of his antimarcionite writings, especially Adversus Marcionem, to then give the text, translation and a close reading and interpretation of his introduction to the Antitheses and Marcion’s Gospel in the extended preface to book IV of Adversus Marcionem. As a result, the reader will get a better understanding of both Tertullian’s literary response to Marcion and Marcion’s Antitheses and his Gospel, but also gain glimpses of what despite all the rhetoric historically might have provoked Tertullian’s response, namely more intellectual proximity between the two interlocutors than the battle on the surface would intimate.

Roman North Africa was one of the major centres where ancient Christianity thrived, and there Donatism was the most prevalent form of Christianity. This neglected story from Late Antiquity is treated in a multi-disciplinary way in the current volume. The Uniquely African Controversy: Studies on Donatist Christianity seeks to uncover what the identity and historical context of Donatism was, and why it disappeared. What was Donatism's legacy? Who were its leaders and adherents? Why did Augustine of Hippo become so embroiled in controversy with the Donatist Church? The contributions to this volume come from scholars from North America, Europe, and Australia, and they cover topics including archaeology, Roman law, theology, martyrology, and ecclesiastical history.

Peeters Publishers Worship in the Network Culture: Liturgical Ritual Studies. Fields and Methods, Concepts and Metaphors
Worship signifies a wide field of liturgical ritual practices that extend from the Sunday morning service in a mainline church through a worship service in an African Independent Church to Christian ritual on the internet and cultural ritual-symbolic practices. Solid and solidified concepts are no longer sufficient for the study of this liquid field. This book approaches liturgical ritual from a different perspective. The first part of this book maps and explores the field of liturgical ritual studies. The second part of the book takes a first step in the process of conceptualisation and elaborates on the sensitising concept of liminality. In part three various aspects of the field are elaborated on in six double perspectives: bricolage/particularity, language/silence, image/sound, embodiment/performance, play/function, time/space. Part four reviews the road that the book has covered to this point from the two theological perspectives that characterise Protestant worship: Sacrament/Word and Prayer/Worship.

Peeters Publishers Rewriting Recent Music History: The Development of Early Serialism 1947-1957
This volume sheds new light on the origins of early serial music at the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s. Current music historical accounts of the development of serial music need to be revised in two ways. It is important to correct both the Eurocentric approach and the exclusive attention to the already well-documented 'heroes' of serial music (Boulez, Stockhausen, Nono, Pousseur). The significance of Milton Babbitt is put into perspective, as are the idiosyncratic contributions by Herman Van San, Karel Goeyvaerts, Michel Fano, Jean Barraque or Bruno Maderna. The contributions to this collected volume deal with the historical position of these composers by analyzing their composition techniques and aesthetical frameworks. In addition, Brian Ferneyhough clarifies his relationship with the legacy of early serial music.

Peeters Publishers Les Sujets Du Pere: Les Rois De France Face Aux Representants Du Peuple Dans Les Assemblees De Notables Et Les Etats Generaux 1302-1615

Peeters Publishers Studium Scribendi: Recherches Sur Les Statuts De L'ecrivain Et De L'ecriture a Rome a La Fin De La Republique
