This book examines the resurgence of good organization as a key competitive factor that was witnessed by firms in the 1990s. The author argues that to be competitive during this period, it was no longer sufficient to have a well-structured strategic plan, and that excessive hierarchy had to be removed. Traditional as well as high-tech companies were forced to evolve, and, the book asserts, the first lessons from these changes can now be drawn.Emmanuel Josserand argues that evolving industrial activity demands a more customized service, and to accomplish this, all sectors are moving towards networked organization, i.e. capable of flexibility and learning, with a capacity for change and problem solving through a process of self-organization, self-coordination and interconnectedness. The conclusion is that although the development of a network organization can be difficult, putting in place these mechanisms is, on balance, a positive move. The author goes on to state that in light of the acceleration of information and communication technology, companies should be capable of adapting themselves quickly, and that the network has thus become the inevitable way forward. The book calls upon experiences of four leading companies who adopted a management style in which decentralization and crosscutting relationships were essential to illustrate this.Highlighting pitfalls for practitioners to avoid, and examining the advantages and difficulties encountered, this book will appeal to researchers, academics and managers with a special interest in the network organization.

Islamist political parties and groups are on the rise throughout the Muslim world and in Muslim communities in the West. Owing largely to the threat of terrorism, political Islam is often portrayed as a monolithic movement embodying fundamentalism and theocracy, an image magnified by the rise of populism and xenophobia in the United States and Europe. Reality, however, is far more complicated. Political Islam has evolved considerably since its spectacular rise decades ago, and today it features divergent viewpoints and contributes to discrete but simultaneous developments worldwide. This is a new political Islam, more global in scope but increasingly local in action. Emmanuel Karagiannis offers a sophisticated analysis of the different manifestations of contemporary Islamism. In a context of global economic and social changes, he finds local manifestations of Islamism are becoming both more prevalent and more diverse. Many Islamists turn to activism, still more participate formally in the democratic process, and some, in far fewer numbers, advocate violence—a wide range of political persuasions and tactics that reflects real and perceived political, cultural, and identity differences. Who Are My People? explores the complex relationship between identity, violence, and Christianity in Africa. In Who Are My People?, Emmanuel Katongole examines what it means to be both an African and a Christian in a continent that is often riddled with violence. The driving assumption behind the investigation is that the recurring forms of violence in Africa reflect an ongoing crisis of belonging. Katongole traces the crisis through three key markers of identity: ethnicity, religion, and land. He highlights the unique modernity of the crisis of belonging and reveals that its manifestations of ethnic, religious, and ecological violence are not three separate forms of violence but rather modalities of the same crisis. This investigation shows that Christianity can generate and nurture alternative forms of community, nonviolent agency, and ecological possibilities. The book is divided into two parts. Part One deals with the philosophical and theological issues related to the question of African identity. Part Two includes three chapters, each of which engages a form of violence, locating it within the broader story of modern sub-Saharan Africa. Each chapter includes stories of Christian individuals and communities who not only resist violence but are determined to heal its wounds and the burden of history shaped by Africa’s unique modernity. In doing so, they invent new forms of identity, new communities, and a new relationship with the land. This engaging, interdisciplinary study, combining philosophical analysis and theological exploration, along with theoretical argument and practical resources, will interest scholars and students of theology, peace studies, and African studies.
