Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Treating the Neurotic Patient in Brief Psychotherapy
This book examines the use of brief psychotherapy with the neurotic patient, using clinical examples throughout. While treatment is shorter in brief psychotherapy, it is not easier or less demanding on the therapist. It demands a clarity of thinking and precision of purpose that takes time and motivation to develop. The contributors have found the principles of brief therapy to be startlingly effective in many situations. Includes chapters by contributors Harold Been, Walter Flegenheimer, Victor Goldin, Althea J. Horner, Isabel Sklar, Manuel Trujillo, and Arnold Winston.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Dealing With the Therapist's Vulnerablility to Depression
The working life of every therapist can be negatively affected in varying degrees by a patient's reactive or endogenous depression or by symptoms such as futility, shame or guilt. In this book, Sheldon Heath describes how depressed patients can put their depression into others through projective identification. Therapists can introject these depressed feelings or psychic parts and, in turn, become depressed. Heath explores the ways in which therapists can strengthen their internal psychological boundaries in order to minimize their vulnerability to depression. They can then remain open to patients' projections without being overwhelmed by them. The recognition that these depressive bits are alien to the therapist brings relief for the therapist from the hopefully transitory depressions that are created by patients. Sometimes the personal life experiences of therapists make them especially vulnerable to the depressive symptoms created by patients. This can be worked on by self-analysis in the ongoing therapeutic process with the patient or client. When patients are depressed, they affect those who care for them. This depression threatens therapists' narcissism and self-esteem, and therapists can react with denial, disavowal and contempt. This gives an illusion of mastery and control and a false sense of triumph, since it implies that only the patients have problems. Therapists' own manic defenses have to be scrutinized and worked with, just as patients' have to be interpreted. Therapists' awareness of their vulnerability and of how patients influence them is valuable in diagnosing what is disturbing the patient and can be of major use in the formulation of effective interpretations. Heath shows that therapists' vulnerability to various forms of depression and depressive-like conditions is not only a natural occurrence in therapy, but one that can be utilized, controlled and reversed.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers The Book of Psychiatric Books
This volume consists of critical reviews of the most important works in psychiatry ever published and excerpts from those works. For psychotherapy, more than any other profession, books define the field. Most therapists have a personal list of books that for them have been memorable, perhaps even mutative, in influencing their thinking and clinical practice. But in addition to such individual favourites, choices are made at different times by the larger society and by one's professional group. As a result, a particular book comes to be regarded for some time as the book of the moment, after which it either sinks into oblivion or passes into the respectability of acceptance as an essential part of any reference list. If it does survive for long, though, it will inevitably come to be seen rather differently over time. Starting in 1982, the editors, Drs. Sidney Crown and Hugh Freeman, commissioned respected scholars to contribute commentary on seminal books in the field to a series in the "British Journal of Psychiatry" called "Books Reconsidered". In most cases, the contributors themselves had known the books over a long period, so that their own personal development as professionals was intimately connected with the works themselves and how they have stood up to time and circumstance. This collection includes all "Books Reconsidered" pieces that were published between the inception of the series in 1982 and the opening months of 1992. The editors have tried to cover as many fields as possible that are relevant to psychiatry as a whole and to its subspecialties. Every mental health professional should find these critiques both interesting and stimulating.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Haphtara Cycles: A Handbook to the Haphtaroth of the Jewish Year
This important volume describes and analyzes each of the seventy-nine haphtaroth of the year, covering the Sabbath and the Festivals and Fast days for both Ashkenazim and Sephardim. Every week in the synagogue, Jews listen to a different haphtara (a selection from the Prophets) related in some way to the Torah reading that precedes it. These haphtaroth contain biblical passages of exceptional historical and literary merit but are usually glossed over as of little interest, especially as they contain many obscure terms and references. It is generally held that the haphtaroth were instituted as a substitute for the Torah readings during an early period of persecution under the Syrians/Greeks, but the author, Stephen Gabriel Rosenberg, shows this to be a questionable theory. After examining other alternatives, he demonstrates that the haphtara grew out of the early practice of adding a homiletic text after the Torah reading, and this in itself was based on the original public pronouncements of many of the Prophets themselves. The Haphtara Cycle: A Handbook to the Haphtaroth of the Jewish Year describes and analyzes each of the seventy-nine haphtaroth of the year, covering the Sabbath and the Festivals and Fast days for both Ashkenazim and Sephardim. The author gives the historical background to passages in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the twelve (minor) Prophets, and also the earlier sections in Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. Rosenberg draws parallels from archaeology and extra-biblical sources and looks at the commentaries of the Talmud and the Midrash, medievalists like Rashi and Kimchi, and moderns such as Mendel Hirsch and Issachar Jacobson. This book throws new light on the passages of the many biblical works that we read each week in the synagogue but that we tend to ignore for lack of explanatory material. This deficiency has now been filled by a work that is both accessible and scholarly and should be readily available in every synagogue where the haphtara is read.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Freud at 150: Twenty First Century Essays on a Man of Genius
The year 2006 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. To commemorate this event, the Austrian government sponsored a number of academic and cultural events. Among these was a historic gathering of representatives of the four major United States psychoanalytic organizations: the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry, the American Psychoanalytic Asociation, Division 39 of the American Psychological Association, and the American Association for Psychoanalysis on Clinical LSocial Work/NMCOP. The essays presented by speakers from these organizations at the Embassy of Austria in Washington, D.C., survey the tremendous and wide-ranging influence that Freud had on history, contemporary society, culture and the arts. The essays form the centerpiece of this book. Complementing these wide-ranging essays are literary works and remarkable photographs of Freud, his family, colleagues and patients which were also presented during the commemorative celebrations of Freud in the United States and Austria.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Self-Injury: Psychotherapy with People Who Engage in Self-Inflicted Violence
People who directly injure their bodies are increasingly seeking help from psychotherapists. Coming out of the closet of shame, they are turning to professionals for understanding, compassion, and healing. Because of the potent nature of self-injury and the variety of issues it touches, clinical responses to it have often been only moderately beneficial and, in too many cases, distinctly harmful. In this perceptive work, Dr. Robin Connors offers helpful guidelines to clinicians that will improve their capacity to respond in a direct, effective, and respectful way to people who self-injure. Key to this work is understanding the function of self-inflicted violence and its relationship to unresolved traumas and losses, including the role of trauma in disrupting the formation of the self-boundary. Dr. Connors identifies fundamental therapeutic tasks, gives clear examples of interventions, and offers concrete recommendations for interacting with patients about their self-injury. A range of related issues are addressed as well, from repairing inadequate self-boundaries to using adjunct therapies. Finally, the task of determining right action in light of strong countertransferential responses is explored, including situations where self-injury occurs in the therapist's presence. In this exceptional book, Dr. Connors gives us the words to describe the pain beneath self-injuring behavior, and a blueprint for providing the compassionate understanding that is a prerequisite for healing.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Extramarital Affair
An extramarital affair is, according to Dr. Herbert Strean, a form of neurotic behavior that reflects the person's unresolved chlidhood conflicts and present level of maturity. Using numerous case histories that provide excellent illustrations, he describes conflicted marriages and the expectations, dissapointments, and frustrations of those who use affairs as a means of escape. Issues such as mate choice, types of marriages, spouses' reactions, and unconsious compliance add depth and complexity to this important and often provocative subject.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Helping Parents Solve Their Children's Behavior Problems
Parents are the most important people in their children's lives. Yet their potential as agents of behavioral change has barely been tapped. A growing body of evidence supports the cost-effective contention that parents can be trained to participate in resolving their children's behavior problems by applying individualized techniques based on learning principles. Behavioral counseling is the name of the process that takes up the popular "minimax" challenge–to bring about maximal change with a minimal expenditure of professional energies. Drs. Schaefer and Eisen, experienced proponents of the process, have selected practical articles from the professional literature to help therapists help parents cope with common problems such as: nightmares, separation anxiety, disruptive behaviors, habit disorders (thumbsucking, bedwetting), dawdling, sibling rivalry, noncompliance. Behavioral counseling–short-term, squarely focused, empirically sound–is becoming the ally of choice in every mental health professional's race to make substantial gains before the client's insurance runs out. Helping Parents Solve Their Children's Behavior Problems is the comprehensive resource that will make the co-therapeutic partnership work.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Substance-Abusing High Achievers: Addiction as an Equal Opportunity Destroyer
Denial of addiction is the most prominent symptom of individuals who have problems with alcohol and substance abuse. Whatever its psychodynamics, their denial is reinforced by (1) fear that acknowledgment and treatment might jeopardize their professional status, and (2) the misconception that intellectual superiority constitutes a safeguard against loss of control. High achievers–doctors, lawyers, business executives, clerics, nurses, professors–are particularly vulnerable to such denial. Moreover, their spouses may share the fear that exposure could jeopardize and even undermine the family's livelihood. Some people become high achievers or overachievers in order to compensate for feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness. These feelings almost invariably surface in the substance abuser, antedating the onset of abuse. A particular challenge in treating this population is to address the negative consequences of low self-esteem without crippling the impulse to excel. Dr. Twerski demonstrates that chemical dependency is indeed an equal opportunity destroyer and he illuminates the makeup of high-achieving substance abusers as their narratives unfold. Addicted individuals will recognize themselves in these pages while providers of human services will discover ways and means to diagnose and intervene.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers The Seasons of Life: Separation-Individuation Perspectives
Margaret Mahler stressed that while the separation-individuation phase comes to an end during the third year of life, the separation-individuation process continues throughout life. Indeed, she viewed the rapprochement subphase of separation-individuation as 'the mainspring of man's eternal struggle against both fusion and isolation.' Exponents of her work have found that each developmental step during life stirs up potential threats of object loss, separation anxiety, and the necessity for negotiating one's relationships with internalized objects of childhood. Eleven distinguished psychoanalysts carry these ideas further in this well-organized volume. Together, they trace the echoes of the separation-individuation process through the Oedipus complex, latency, and adolescence, well into mature adulthood, even senescence. Combining psychoanalytically informed infant and child observation data with the established tenets of ego psychology and object relations theory, these investigators highlight the separation-individuation motif looming in the background of all adult development. They demonstrate the value of such conceptualization with the help of characters from literary classics as well as poignant clinical vignettes. The turmoil of adolescence, the vigor of young adulthood, the contemplative and yet enriching anguish of midlife, and the generative wisdom of grandparenthood and old age are all brought into consideration. Despite such normative bent and wide-ranging scope, the focus of the book remains clinical. Its ultimate aim is to enhance the clinician's ability to decipher, empathize with, and technically handle the dilemmas of separation, loss, and continuing individuation presented by our patients.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Brief Strategic Solution-Oriented Therapy of Phobic and Obsessive Disorders
This book is about psychological disorders based on irrational fears - those apparently unmotivated, paralyzing, panic-filled, gutwrenching fears whose multiplicity and diversity are barely contained in the diagnoses phobias and obsessional disorders. The author, worldrenowned therapist Giorgio Nardone, offers a brief (usually less than 20 session) treatment method that leads to a change in the interpersonal, cognitive, and emotional organizations underlying these painful and all too-common problems. Therapists using a strategic framework focus on reframing patients' representations of self and other, and on changing the relational patterns that sustain fearful perceptions. Based on extensive research and illustrated with in-depth clinical examples, this book offers hope to those whose lives have been unnecessarily limited by their phobias and obsessions. Strategic brief therapy, as developed by John H. Weakland, Paul Watzlawick, and Richard Fisch, is based on a very simple idea problems are accidentally maintained by our repeated, failed attempts at solving them. In this book, Giorgio Nardone uses the strategic brief therapy lens to focus on how particular troubles are accidentally maintained and how therapist and client can overcome them. The follow- up (79 percent resolved and 7 percent much improved) certainly points to the efficacy of Nardone's approach. Giorgio Nardone's strategic psychotherapy model shows specific originality and an innovative quality compared to other brief therapy models. Phobic and obsessive disorders are difficult to treat. Nardone's model achieves rapid symptom remission even in severe forms of panic, fear, and phobia. This book is a very practical manual for professionals because it guides the reader clearly through the different stages of therapy and presents treatment protocol as well as concrete examples of results. A study of two clinical cases, complete with a transcript of therapy, not only enhances comprehension of the model but underscores the brilliance of the

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Akedah: The Binding of Isaac
This is an in-depth study of a biblical story that excites curiosity while repelling readers with the thought that Abraham was ready to express his obedience to God by sacrificing his own son. The story of the Akedah, Abraham's binding and near sacrifice of his son, Isaac, is one of the most enigmatic passages of the Bible. Not only a story of Abraham's devotion to God, this biblical episode reflects the classic tension between generations. Louis A. Berman uses his training as a psychologist and his personal experience as a father to craft his intensive inquiry into the Akedah. The Akedah: The Binding of Isaac opens with a careful reading of Genesis 22, taking time to discuss crucial words and phrases. However, an understanding of Genesis 22 hinges not only on knowing the episode itself, but on knowing what surrounds it. Therefore, the reader is systematically acquainted with the biblical context of the story, and with significant biblical concepts that give the story its meaning. The binding of Isaac lends itself to countless interpretations, and chapters of The Akedah are devoted to many of them. The interpretations explored? martyrdom, atonement, the test of obedience, response to disaster, and the sanctity of human life are drawn from a broad range of sources. The multitude of interpretations of the Akedah is part of what makes the event so accessible to a diverse number of readers. This is an in-depth study of a biblical story that excites curiosity while repelling readers with the thought that Abraham was ready to express his obedience to God by sacrificing his own son. Louis A. Berman examines the place of the Akedah story in world mythology, in history, in psychology, in Christian and Islamic thought, in art and music, and in the literature of England, America, and Israel.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Minding the Social Brain
Minding the Social Brain —Virtual Foundation Stone For the initiative to fund a decade-long BRAIN ACTIVITY MAP —BAM as in OBAMA A generation of social neuroscientists uses acronyms to identify the structural neural networks revealed in the NIH Human Connectome Project. They know that a medial brain hub of nodal networks, the Default Mode (DM), uses most of the brain’s activation energy. Responding to the unexpected, it adapts the brain’s predictive capacity by learning—modifying its own synaptic structure. During syndrome formation in brain damage, depression, traumatic anxiety, or psychosis, the DM maintains familiar mental fantasy and reverie—even when its core networks should be processing new data for adaptive problem-solving. Alzheimer’s disease decimates all the nodes of this hub. Just as industry alongside government generated our genome code, researchers worldwide in the private sector and government are already exploring how a brain’s emergent property unifies its mind. Alert to perspectives that determine their future, workers in the social field have to develop their own emergent learning. Dr. Harris here provides a Rosetta Stone for exploring neural networks, mental hubs, mind/brain synthesis—and institutions that externalize these structures. Extending Freud’s discovery of a person’s dynamic unconscious, he depicts a dynamic social unconscious mediating social, economic, and political policy. From this perspective he presents contemporary and historical social syndromes. Collective PTSD, for instance, manifests in global criminal economies, widespread poverty, media escapism, and political denial. International Psychoanalytic Books (IPBooks.net) and distributor Jason Aronson, Inc. are happy to present this compelling analysis of individual and collective syndromes that have their own emergent sources in both social process and brain process.

Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Mothering without a Home: Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children
Homeless women and their children who reside in a transitional housing facility or shelter have experienced multiple traumas and disruptions in their earliest attachments. These multiple, chronic traumas often result in disorganized attachment disorders, which, in turn, affect all future development. Although there are a dearth of programs and interventions that work with disorganized attachment disorder within the homeless population, there are few studies that explore the difficulties that homeless mothers experience in forming positive attachments with their children. Mothering without a Home: Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children explores the attachment style of homeless mothers and its effect on the resulting attachment style of their children. Ann Smolen utilizes psychoanalytically informed interventions with the goal of aiding these women in developing a deeper capacity to understand and be attuned to their children’s emotional needs.
