Academica Press Türkiye as a Stabilizing Power in an Age of Turmoil
More than three decades after the Cold War, international institutions have yet to cope with pressing problems, emerging challenges, and regional and international conflicts. Against the backdrop of an unraveling international order, deepening humanitarian crises, and an uptick in violence, Turkey, under President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an's leadership, has advocated international cooperation to find solutions. At the same time, the country has adopted a more proactive foreign policy with an eye toward ending long-standing international disputes while avoiding the trap of unilateralism. Written by Turkey's communications director, Fahrettin Altun, this book offers a concise yet detailed analysis of Turkish foreign policy within the context of civil wars, humanitarian tragedies, and the structural changes taking place in Turkey's neighborhood. Highlighting the historical origins of contemporary problems and the destabilizing effect of unresolved conflicts, the author provides valuable insights into Turkish perspectives on the situation in Cyprus, the Syrian Civil War, the future of Iraq, Iran's nuclear ambitions, the Arab Spring, and the Libyan conflict. Finally, Türkiye as a Stabilizing Power in an Age of Turmoil explains why the country has called for the reform of international organizations, such as the United Nations and NATO, and sheds light on the ways in which Turkey has responded to fresh challenges, including the rise of populism and far-right extremism.

Little, Brown Book Group The Turkish Embassy Letters
The critical and biographical introduction tells of Lady Wortley Montagu's travels through Europe to Turkey in 1716, where her husband had been appointed Ambassador. Her lively letters offer insights into the paradoxical freedoms conferred on Muslim women by the veil, the value of experimental work by Turkish doctors on inoculation, and the beauty of Arab poetry and culture. The ability to study another culture according to its own values and to see herself through the eyes of others makes Lady Mary one of the most fascinating of early travel writers and commentators

Pluto Press Turkey Reframed: Constituting Neoliberal Hegemony
The first decade of the 2000s was a period of radical change in Turkish society and politics, marked by the major economic crisis of 2001 and the coming to power of ex-Islamist cadres organised under the Justice and Development Party (AKP). As the 'Turkish model' gains traction across the Middle East, this chronicle of Turkey's recent history dispels some important myths. This period of radical change, with its continuities and breaks, pays close attention to the AKP, the main actor in the creation of a neoliberal hegemony in post-1980 Turkey. The contributors map relations between the AKP and the Kurdish people, the evolution of Turkish nationalism under the AKP and look at how everyday politics, from social welfare to housing, have been effected by the AKP's 'stabilisation strategy'. What is revealed is modern Turkey's conflictual, turbulent and painful recent histories, which vary wildly from the national myths that sustain neoliberal hegemony in the country.

Broadview Press Ltd The Turkish Embassy Letters (1763)
In 1716, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's husband Edward Montagu was appointed British ambassador to the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire. Despite discouragement from friends that feared for her safety, she accompanied her husband to Turkey and wrote an extraordinary series of letters that recorded her experiences as a traveller and her impressions of Ottoman culture and society. These letters, addressed primarily to her sister and to Alexander Pope, became the basis for a highly crafted text that was not published until 1763. Like many women who rebelled against gender conventions, Montagu was the target of vicious attacks from her contemporaries. But her status as a woman traveller is crucial to her distinctive perspective, and one can argue that her letters offer a feminist alternative to much of the orientalist writing of both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This edition includes a broad selection of related historical documents on Turkey, women in the Arab world, Islam, and "Oriental" tales written in Europe.
